Wife said Train room is beginning to look like a warehouse with the supplies.

I said the railroad was delivering supplies to the affected

Hello All,

I work as a ski/snowboard instructor in Colorado at two resorts.

One; Breckenridge, just suspended their season until March 22. They have suspended all operations at their North American resorts as well.

According to corporate, a decision about the rest of the season will be made on March 23. I highly doubt that many if any Vail corporation owned resorts will reopen.

The other resort I teach at; Arapahoe Basin- -which is independently owned, will probably follow suit in the coming weeks.

On the plus side, Arapahoe Basin typically stays open until June so the possibility of them reopening is greater, especially when other resorts are closed for the season.

Hoping everyone stays safe and healthy as we endure this pandemic.

Terribly sorry that you've lost your job. Another one is very close. Having been there too many times, I encourage you to not allow the setback to impact your daily life.

The job loss is not a set back, and not bad news. I want to avoid getting into the details here, plus there is an NDA, but it was much better than keeping my job.

I am going to take 1-3 years off, finish my stalled house remodel project, and start my layout.

If I live frugally, I might never need to go back to work.

John Allen managed to live frugally and build the GORRE & DAPHETID for twenty years. It would be a dream to get to do that. But, John Allen was not married to my wife.

I'm just so glad I did not buy that $400,000.00 house that was tempting me. I would be in a much different situation now.

-Kevin

Good luck with your plans. I retired in 2001 at the age of 49 and followed the John Allen example of living frugally. I figured being able devote full time to the layout that I would be able to complete my 28X48 basement empire in five years. Here I am 19 years later and I am not even close. I discovered that even in retirement, I am very busy with lots of activities and during the summer months with golf I rarely find time to work on the layout. It has become an October thru April hobby. On top of that, this hobby can be mentally fatiguing. It's a nice idea to spend an eight hour day in the layout room but I can't recall ever doing that. I have to get away from it. Four hours a day is usually the max for me.

Wow, even the ski places closing. The one I am an instructor at closed last week because we ran out of snow. Confused

Kevin,

Well by al means it sounds like you are making lemonade from lemons and I hope it all goes well.

As for me I am working at home for the next two weeks and they have already given me the access I need.  So with everything closed down and no commute a lot of work on the layout will happen I hope.

That 2% fatality rate is based on the known case numbers. Considering there are many more cases with no symptoms or not diagnosed, the death rate would be even lower. i ain't skeered.Cool

Yeah. I haven't skiied for years but used to often as a teen and 20 something in California.  I would not have thought of a ski resort as a high risk for transmission sort of place.

But unlike the past pandemics, everyone is running around with their hair on fire and hoarding, of all things, toilet paper.  I am glad my wife keeps us well stocked on most of the things that are wiped out at the stores.  We always have plenty of hand santizer at work.  And most of those who can are now teleworking.

I'm not scared either but I do take prudent precautions. I'm 68, overweight, and diabetic so I am in a high risk group should I contract the virus. It might not kill me but it might make me feel so bad that I would wish it would.

I agree with your assessment of the math. If you don't know the denominator, you can't calculate the right answer as far as mortality rates go.

As I observed when I started this thread, with everything shutting down, there's not a lot else to do but spend time in the layout room. In Ohio they shutdown bars and restaurants yesterday. No live sporting event and almost none on TV. I don't even like to turn on the TV because I'm tired of hearing about the virus. I'm waiting word on whether our bowling alley has shutdown. If it has, there go my Tuesday and Thursday mornings.  The only reason for going out is to go to the grocery store and that can be an adventure. I went to Walmart yesterday to get some basics. As expected they were out of hand sanitizer. I was hoping to find some rubbing alcohol because it's easy to make your own but that was gone too. Bread and toilet paper were cleaned out. I did manage to find one loaf of multi-grain bread on the top shelf where a lot of people can't reach. I left my cart to get something else and when I came back my cart was gone. I found it three aisles over and the bread was gone. The good news is while looking for it, I came across a stack-cart that had a few loaves of Schweibel white bread on it. I'm guessing they just wheeled it out figuring there was no point in putting it on the shelves because it would go so fast. They were right. There were three loaves left on it. I just took one. I got some flour and yeast so I can make my own bread if this hoarding continues.

Stay safe, everybody.

UPDATE: Just got the word our bowling alley is closed until further notice. Since our morning group only bowls until the end of April, I'm not optimistic we will be bowling again until next fall.

No word yet on the golf courses. I don't see any reason for them to shut down. You don't have large numbers of people congregating together. Just a foursome. One of my golf courses does a brisk restaurant businesses and they might decide with the restaurant closed, the golf revenue might not be enough to pay the bills.

Our local RR club (Oshawa, Ont)  has cancelled formal meetings for a while.  The club is open, because each member has a key,

Our club president when working was the Topronto/Ontario  point man on Chemical/Biological/nuclear and explosive emergencies.  He appears to have become concerned.

As pointed out by many on this forum, a number of us are older, overweight and/or diabetic.

Be well guys/

My wife and I cancelled plans for the rest of March, and we are staying home as much as possible.

I am already spending more time with the model railroad.

My wife and I didn't have any plans through the end of April so no changes.

Most of the things occupying our free time are home projects so that keeps us busy on the weekends, that and working on the layout.  The only plans beyond that was the early May Timonium show which was canceled.

Most of the supplies I need to work on the layout right now are hardware related so I'll need to make a trip or two to Lowes or Home Depot.

I lost school starting today, but that doesn't mean I get more train time! Sad I have to continue to do virtual school which means spending 6 hours a day doing the worst part of school: homework. No time for trains, or energy for that matter! When school first got canceled I though hooray, now I can do my virtual school, have it done by morning, and get all those things I've been wanting to do done (I.e. clean my train tracks, I haven't done that in 3 months!).

Still I suspect we'll see a bit more activity on the forums this month!

TP shortage?  Don't be caught with your pants down when the supply at your local supplier unrolls.  Don't be held hostage at the stall corner by the local shylock.  Don't go begging to your hoarding neighbor.  Don't pay $40 per roll at the dollar store.

No, I'm not making this up.  See https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Poop%20Cloth for details.

At the last week of February and first week of the month (March). I was sick with the cold/flu and couldn't do anything for 5 days other than sleep. Now I just have a dry/ wet cough but I'm still taking medicine.

Recently I got a SD50 C&O chessie system #8636, GP60 ATSF #4023, and Kato Japanese figures. Plus 25,000 gallon tank car GATX #54373 and Kato 4-4-2 sleeper Regal Inn. Within 2 weeks. I'm planning to get another SD50 next month after I go to the dentist this month. I'm not calling to cancel because I have to pay to reschedule.

My walks are still my activity of railroad topics and situations. Perhaps one day I'll buy undecorated units of locomotives and cars into the G.N.O. Railway.

Actually we have a pretty good handle on the number of deaths so it's highly unlikely the mortality rate could be higher than 2%. What we don't know is the number of people infected. The higher that number, the lower the mortality rate.

Hello All,

The closing of ALL the ski resorts in colorado was a declaration by the Governor.

A decision will be made next Monday; a week from today, as to what the next steps will be.

Harrison
Wow, even the ski places closing. The one I am an instructor at closed last week because we ran out of snow. [confused]

Unfortunately or fortunately the snowpack is not the problem. Plenty of great skiing and snowboarding left here in Colorado.

Well, at least I can get those shelved projects done...

  • Re-motored and repainted a GP-30 and converted it to a "B" unit
  • Rebuilt the drivetrain on an ailing SW-1500 cow
  • Finally getting around to finishing the kitbashed Northern Light & Power building
  • Finishing the scratch built HO scale Gunderson well car with oversized load of replacement conveyor belt for the coal mine

Definitely a "lemons to lemonade" situation.

Wishing everyone is healthy and safe!

Hope this helps.

You guys who can work on layouts are ok.

Because of eyes and hand tremores I cannot anymore. Gave away a lot of stuff.

I have about forty milse of rail trails in my area and an eBike and eHeart, Pacemaker, almost seventy nine.About 1,400 miles a year.

My little city still has the station and a  Union Station about eight miles away with a tunnel crossing under a freight and Amtrak line to another rail trail. Amtrak platform nearby. Nice to see where many places the freight use to be delivered and picked up. Many of us use to carry our bikes over two sets of rails before Amtrak was re-routed through our area.

A rail trail now goes just about all the way to New Haven Ct.
