Good afternoon from the beautiful West Coast of the Great White North where it is a nice 12c (sorry Charlie)
The kid and I went to the Canucks game last night to watch them dispatch the LA kings, it was a sperm of the moment (as Archie Bunker used to say) decision and $400.00 later we left with big smiles having had a great time with good centre ice seats surrounded by great fans.
I had a great workout this morning with some serious HIT training and great work with the weights as well. I ate stadium food last night and man does it ever show up in poor energy levels and how I feel the next day, but I got it done regardless.
The kid has been writing for the OHL ( Ontario Hockey League) this year. They approached him on the recommendation of some West Coast hockey broadcast people last summer. He was asked out of the blue and thought it might be fun even though it is unpaid. This has lead to internet hockey talk show participation as well as radio commentary. Just recently the boss at TSN has contacted him about employment as has Sportsnet. He thanked them politely and said he has a lot of education still ahead of him as he wants to be the puppeteer, not the puppet. They both laughed said to call them first when he is done with school. A perfect example of creating your own luck as some around him said they would not have done it without getting paid. If he gets his law degree in entertainment/contract law along with his economics degree he will be able to write his own ticket. The movie/video game industry interests him the most but sports are right up there as well. As long as he gets me free tickets to the Canucks I'll be happy.
Well, the wife wants to go for a long walk with the dogs so whats another 500 calories other than several rums and Pepsi's to replenish the loss. Three double Rums and Pepsi's are about 450 calories so I am way ahead because I'll probably have only two.

I spent Saturday and night with my brother checking out his layout. It was so good to see he had his priorities straight just like mine
My layout is in the living room and it's a part of it. His layout is much bigger and takes over the whole living room. His couch and coffee table occupy about a 6x10 area with no TV.
After a pat on the back and telling my brother how proud I was of him. He told me after his second woman didn't work out, this layout is his third and final wife We laughed.
I helped him foam out his elevated S curve last night. We had to remove half his yard as it will be reducing turnout to turnout to go under a bridge on the S curve with two opposing directional mains. Good thing he took my advice in using the Alex Plus.
My brother kind of wings it as he goes along. Something I could learn from him, .... he's got more done in two months then I've gotten done in two years. We had a lot of fun yesterday.
Looking at my brother's choice of track. I have to tell you I am reconsidering everything.
Peco code 55. I have only seen this stuff on the hooks in hobby stores and never held it in my hand to examine it. The downside is the tie size and spacing reminds me of old Atlas code 80. But the rails are embedded in the ties and it looks like the cast iron Cadilac Brick House of all track I've ever seen.
As perfect and flawless as the turnouts appear with their click action. I would not foresee derailments happening on these turnouts.

Expecting it to start snowing shortly but I think I will go to the gym anyway.
Dave, Maxman has a point regarding terriers. If by discipline you mean giving the dog a smack, never do that. They don't understand it. Isolation is a far better course. If the Pom started to get pushy, not surprised that the Boston had a go but while to us it seems extreme, that is what dogs do to establish a pecking order. Only if it becomes a fight is it a real problem. When we had 2 West Highland terriers, they played together a lot but if the male got a little too aggressive with the female she would attack him and even drew blood a few times. Just to show him who is boss. As far as the store incidents you mentioned go, I think it is entirely the owners fault. We never let anyone get their face near our dogs. To them it is an aggressive act especially if they are being held. That German Shepard should have been on a leash. It probably was really frightened and so acted aggressively. By the way, I think dogs shouldn't be allowed in stores because there are so many irresponsible owners whose dogs are likely poorly trained.
I may be coming across as trying to be some sort of dog expert but I'm not. Just had a dog for 45 years. Also we have friends who bred and showed Westies for many years. They ran a grooming business so have a great knowledge about various dog breeds and their behaviour.
Yesterday I did run the C liner. I did a night run with all the lights in the village lit as well as those in the passenger cars. I wish I could find a B unit but I don't think True Line made one.

However, last summer one of our relatives brought her Pomeranian to the house and the Boston Terrier went totally berserk and tried to attack the other dog.
I don't see anything particularly unpredictable about that. Terriers were originally bred to hunt vermin and probably thought that the Pomeranian was a fluffy rat.

There was an incident in a Home Depot store in Canada a few years ago where an employee bent over close to a small dog that was in the owner's arms. The dog bit the end of the employee's nose off, disfiguring her for life! After that, Home Depot Canada banned all dogs other than assistance dogs from coming into the stores.
At the Home Depot in Newmarket a few years ago a man came in with a German Shepard that was not on a leash. The dog wandered away from the owner and then panicked when it realized the owner wasn't close. The dog immediately became extremely aggressive. It was barking and snapping at everyone and running wild, to the point where it would not respond to the owner's commands. It was one of the scariest moments the staff had ever had. I'm glad I wasn't working that day. I would likely have tried to kill the dog, or the owner, or both!!!

Far as the leader of the pack? He is submissive with me, I walk by and he rolls onto his back. Only time he pulls is when he needs to pee or poop. After that he is either beside me or a little behinde.
To get him to catch up to me I start sing Army Cadence's. Left, your Left, your Left right Left. You had a good home but you Left, your right, you had a good home Left your right. Catches right up with me but no pulling!

We have four children and nine grandkids. I would make every sacrifice necessary to protect them.
There wouldn't be a need for age restriction rules if PARENTS would exercise their responsibility to protect their youngsters.
I'll bet there's a report of a car-jacking here at least once a month where the parent "just popped-in" to the store while leaving their vehicle running in the car park with children inside!
Still, there has to be rules. Go to a "kid friendly" amusement park and you'll find restrictions there, too.

Hi Gang, and a belated Merry Cristmas to all. Things got a little hecktic for this ol'cogger for a few days and I haven't been on the puter. Hope you all had a very Merry and a tummy full of bird. Most of all my wish for you is a happy and healthy New Year of 2020 and beyond.
Things have been very quiet on the LM&E, did get to run a couple of trains but no construction of any kind. I sure hope to get that changed in 2020.
Weather here has been mild so far but, I think we are in for a very Hard next three months. Thats OK, all the more train time (between medical appointments).I am do for some catarack removal Jan-Feb. So hope that will improve my vision more.
Well, I have a talk to write for Church tomorrow so I had better get that out of the way.

Ed, it wasn't a good morning for me to write on the forum! With a house full, I have lost track not only of the time but of the day. Have a happy Saturday.
It finally quit raining, so we got the grandkids to run around outside for a while. It's in the 30s, but they didn't need coats. Seven kids under the age of 10, and I'm trying to survive. If it doesn't snow too much tomorrow, they will all head home.
You probably won't hear from me for a week or so -- I'll be sleeping.

It was going down smooth as silk last night. Sat in the dark with the glow of the fireplace and Christmas tree and while looking at all the Christmas lights outside sipped Glenfiddich and played my guitars for a long time, life was/is perfect.
Got up this morning grabbed a cuppa and sat down with the guitars again, Gordon Lightfoot, Peter Paul and Mary, then John Denver lead the first two and a half hours and just as I was getting into Neal Young I broke a nail so I came into the kitchen for the clippers and file and here I am.
Being married to a Vet and having animals in our life including six Golden Retrievers, the wife and I think the animals in stores and restaurants thing is really getting carried away.
I think the best steak I ever had was on the big island Hawaii. The restaurant was right on the cattle ranch. I felt like I was in Alberta on a ranch as the grassland with the cattle grazing seemed a little out of place in Hawaii. The fact that we were also on the side of a volcano help to remind us a bit that we were in the Pacific.
Nail repaired, so with a refill on the coffee it is back to the axe(s)

My sister thought that, too. The dog pulled her off balance and she fell and broke both wrists. At our age it is pretty easy to get knocked off balance.
I took all my dogs to obedience school. Best thing I ever did. Two nights a week for about 6-8 weeks. Dogs learned to get along with others and it was a very rewarding experience. They were sponsored by one of the local community education groups.

As far as dogs in public goes, I don't mind dogs as long as they are well trained. In France, small dogs are allowed in most restaurants and the ones we have seen are usually under the table or sitting beside the owners chairs and not a peep is heard or unruly behaviour. In fact some places don't allow children but pets are ok. I don't have much tolerance for unruly, noisy kids and not much respect for the parents.
Ken, sounds like Dirk is trying to take over as leader of the pack and feels he needs to protect you. You have to always be the leader. We have a lot of experience with terriers who can be quite pushy. Even when you go out the door, you go first as you are the leader, then give Dirk permission to follow. If he barks to be fed, wait and then you decide when that time is to be. When you walk him, don't let him lead, he should be beside you or just behind. This is just the 'pack' thing. I assume he is neutered. If not, getting that done will likely help.
Having said all that our dog loves all people but gets really aggresive with other dogs, especially large ones. He was trampled by a large dog in an obedience class when he was a pup and ever since then sees large dogs as a threat. We have tried to train him out of it but after 10 years he still reacts when he sees a large dog. He is small, but being a terrier he thinks he can beat anything on 4 legs. Luckily we can just pick him up if we have to avoid a situation.
Glad Christmas is over. I know that sounds a little like Scrooge but I just don't get the enjoyment out of it like I used to do. It is a family time and I don't have much of that left anymore, just one sister and I'm not close to her. I get along ok with her but I can't stand her 3 useless sons and my BIL isn't much better.
Think I will make some nice coffee, go downstairs and fire up the C Liner.

I am glad Christmas is over. The older I get, the less I develop that "Christmas Spirit", which the retail business tells me I should have so they can feast on my wallet. Christmas has become way too commercial for my taste and I bet that a lot of people do not even know these days what we actually celebrate on Christmas day.
Am I turning into a grinch? Maybe!
I know pet lovers will hate me for this but I don´t think that pets should be allowed in banks, shops and restaurants. There are lots and lots of people around who suffer from various allergies caused by pet hair. I am for one show a strong athma-like reaction to cats, which hinders me to be anywhere near a cat, although I quite like them.
So, out of consideration for other folks - leave your pet at home!

I have a friend who travels with a mastiff as a service dog. I'm sure he does it just to avoid the hassle/expense of boarding his dog, although he probably has to pack a suitcase full of dog food. Flight Attendants are starting to push back on the zoo that is now allowed to fly on planes as not all these animals are well mannered.

I don't agree with making businesses in general pet friendly. Restaurants with outdoor seating are fine, but do people really need a dog with them when they go to the bank? My girlfriend has a large dog, and knows enough to leave him home. The dog can be very unruly, particularly in the presence of other dogs, and it's just better to find a dog-friendly beach or trail to take him out.
Of course, here in Delaware we have establishments where dogs are allowed (no on-site food preparation) but children are not (alcohol but not food being served.)

Ed Our Lowes, Bank and the Library are pet friendly so we take Dirk with us. I am starting to rethink that program. Way I hold his lead it is very unlikely he would get away from me. The handle fits over my elbow, then I wrap it two turns around my forarm and hold the lead with my hand.
I thinking about contacting Parnters For Pets, the resuce he came from and see what suggestions they may have.

My plans with my Brother are postponed this morning. The whole city is an ice rink up here. Cars spun out and racked up everywhere. Judy's work was called off till further notice.
My Bro. called and said running to McDonald's this morning was a mistake. What normally would have took 5 minutes took him over an hour and he never made it to McDonald's before he got back home.
It's supposed to warm up and start raining again. I'll just have to wait it out. Maybe later.
Good Morning All,
Quiet day. I'll just have a regular in a togo cup please ladies. Saturday in the shop making radiators for the Lotus 18. I take from Christmas to New Years to do my own projects and if I get this knocked out I can get on with the next project. we make the radiators from aluminum prefab cores we get and then form the end caps and weld it all up. The 18 has the water radiator and then an oil radiator below from the same size matrix so there is a bit of fab work to do first.
Hope you all had a good Christmas - we got all the kids save the youngest who is in California now over in the morning and then went to my oldests' in-laws later in the day so it went quickly. Waiting on my brother in law who is up from Virginia to stop by the shop on his rounds. Catch y'all later, J.R.
