CNCharlie

TF, I hope your holiday is good one. Sorry about the cold weather you may soon recieve.

CN Charlie

Thanks Charlie,  you too.

Yes, you're right about the cold coming.  It's coming early this year but then again, so did the snow.  I think I heard a high of 2 degrees by Monday.

We've been a little spoiled up here for the last 3 days,  it's been 38 to 40 degrees.  I've been working inside but going out to the garage in my t-shirt to get things for my job and it felt like a tropical Heatwave.

People of the South think us Northerners are a little crazy for living in this cold weather.  They are probably right,  I know I've been a little crazy for yearsWhistling

Honestly,  given the choice, I would take the cold over hot and humid any day.  I don't do well in the heat.

Have a good one Charlie.

I had an MG for a day or so:

I think it's 1972?

It wasn't originally red but BRG (small spot remaining above the rocker panel) and the underside of the boot is still green:

The fenders weren't original, they were painted "Sandglow" under the red.

My wife's dad was "restoring" it and, as these things go, never had time to even begin the project. I gave it to one of the fellows I w**ked with. I guess his brother did get it put together but I never saw any photos of it.

Cheers, Ed

'72 MGB, Damask Red?

Any color is fine with me, as long as it is BRG - British Racing Green! The one and only color for a British sports car!

Like this? N Scale, so the details are not as crisp.

I had a red MGB, 1975.  The chrome bumpers, effectively just shiny ornamentation, were gone by that point, and the car was significantly higher off the road, both thanks to government regulations.

If I had been building trains back then, I would only be able to build benchwork in the summer.  This was my only car, and to get lumber or foam back from Home Depot I would have had to put the top down.

If they'd had British Racing Green when I bought the car, I would have bought that, but at that time getting anything on order from England was time-consuming and hit-or-miss.

When it's time for the big roundhouse in the sky, if St. Peter hands me the keys to my old red MGB, I will know I am in heaven.  If I get the keys to the yellow Pontiac Sunbird station wagon, though, well, then I am in the other place.

I loved that car.  It's not terribly practical, having only two seats, but it was such a blast to drive.

'72 MGB, Damask Red? When the time comes, I'll keep an eye out for you. We can talk trains while the shop adjusts the timing on the B.

Good morning, everyone.

Not much going on today, but I have a visit with my most unfavorite person, my dentist.

There's no reason to dislike the visits -- whenever I have had dental work it has been painless and successful.

However, I HATE going.  Don't know why, maybe it goes back to my childhood.

Hope everyone has a good day.  The dog is ready for a walk.

Does that have a timing belt or a timing chain?  The timing belt is what gets you.  Honda recommends that the timing belt be replaced at around 90,000 miles.  I think that belts are more prone to breaking than a chain.  Then they get you with the water pump "because we're just about there to get at the belt, and you don't want to pay for that part of the labor twice, do you?".

I believe that the Odyssey has a timing belt. I'd have to look up my records to see if it has already been changed once, but all of the servicing has been done at the Honda dealership where we bought it, on Honda's recommended schedule.

I'm still wondering a bit about the water pump thing, but I plan on keeping the vehicle for several more years so I look at it as a long term investment. As far as buying another Odyssey, overall the service costs have been quite reasonable, but the main reason that I would buy another one is because it is so nice to drive. The V6 engine has tons of power and the ride is smooth and comfortable. As for handling, well it's a van, not a sports car, but the handling is not sloppy and is quite predictable.

One other factor is that it is easy for me to get into and out of the van. I'm 6'2" with a partially fused spine so getting in and out of a lot of vehicles is a PITA. Even most SUVs are a pain because, even though their doors are reasonably tall, their seats are generally quite high so I still end up dragging my head across the door frame.Grumpy

I will say that my opinion of large vehicles has changed. When I had my MGB in the 70s I swore I would never own a big vehicle. Ha! Chevy Caprices became my car of choice for a long time and I like the Odysseys even more.LaughLaugh

Me again Ulrich....  One more question just because I am interested.  If you go out of the bedroom and straight across into the room to the left of the bedroom, what is that room?  A guest bedroom?

73

Correct - a guest bedroom. We need to be able to accommodate our son, if he finds the time to visit his old folks.

The place has some 600 sq.ft., which is not much, but not much less than what we actually have today, if we consider the fairly large hall of our apartment. We don´t spend much time in our living room at all these days, so the space we actually use is less than in the pplanned house. We will lose our storage in the attic, but we intend to de-clutter and pair down quite a lot.

I´ll be sending the plans to the nice Greek lady today and we will chat about them via Skype. I expect the cost to be around $45k and would be really surprized if the amount would exceed that figure. They offer a single 40ft. container for about $20k, and my design is based on two containers, plus a little annex for the entrance. However, we will have only 1 Kitchen, one bathroom and no A/C.

Happy times!

 Eveing Diners

Flo, get the diners what they want on my tab, I will take a Beer and Dirk his usual treat.

Folks thanks for the kind comments. It not like it is a war zone when I come home with fighting and such. I am just tired of living this way.

I have redacted the main part of my last post. Decided not to air my dirty laundery for all to see. Friends here at the diner know and that is what counts. I may reach out for some help in the future.

Ed I may be calling you Friday when you are home. If nothing else I need a idea on what to get you for Christmas Gift

Credit Score is back up! Big Smile Funny how paying off a personal loan brought it down 7 points?

Train Front. Finally sending back the PRR I1sa for warranty repair at BLI. Part of the reason I was putting it off was because I broke the tether cable trying to fix the engine my self. Whistling Called them today and spoke with Melanie today and she said not a problem! She is all so sending me free traction tire for the B&O President Adams Heavy Pacific for free! Big Smile

Later, None smoking Ken and Dirk said Woof Woof.

Wow Dave, I think that is crazy! I have a Ford 2002 Ranger, with 240,000 miles, and do regular oil change and service, about every 3,000 mile.

Good Evening,

Dave,  I have to say I m due for plugs and afew other things next year, likely about a grand. My car only has 116k km on but it will be 10 years old in April. Luckily I don,t have a timing belt to do as my car has a timing chain.

TF, I hope your holiday is good one. Sorry about the cold weather you may soon recieve.

Time for tea and a mincemeat tart.

Charlie, you got off cheap! The last service on our 2014 Honda Odyssey cost us $2800.00 and it was all routine work. Mind you it was the 160,000 km service which involves all sorts of things like adjusting the valves, new spark plugs, and changing the timing belt and water pump in addition to the routine service like oil and filters. They also put in new front rotors and smoothed the pads. The water pump ($700.00) was optional but I decided to do it anyhow. We lost our last Odyssey because of a cooling system failure.

After reading what your doing to your Odyssey at 160,000, I would not be buying another.

In other news, I've turned part of the train room into a cabinet shop, I'm building a vanity cabinet, shelves, and towel racks from old reclaimed barn wood.  All Christmas presents.

I'll have to post pictures as work progesses.  Today, I cut all the parts for the vanity base, tomorrow, I'll glue and start assembly.

You know...... I'm hitting the rack early tonight.  Before I do.

I'm just remembering my Grandmother this holiday season and how she taught me things that stuck to me for a life time because her and my Grandfather spent more time with us kids than our parents ever did.

I remember she taught me something like this when I was very young, and I still do it to this day...... sometimes.  I hope it does'nt come across corney because I don't mean it that way.  I'm actually not very religious,  in fact if you looked at any of my pictures you might see horns growing through my hairLaugh

I haven't practiced it for a long time.  I'll dust off the rust for the holiday season.

God bless....  Dave, Brent, Ulrich, Kevin, Charlie, Ed, Wayne, Mike, Mel, Sheldon, John, Uncle Butch, Steve-O, Henry, Steven and Harrison of course.

I know I missed some here...... but I practice the way my Grandmother and Grandfather raised me right and that's what's important.

Happy Holidays Kids!

Ken I am sorry about your marital situation.  I tried marital counseling and it postponed the inevitable.  I don't know if that was a good thing or bad for my young kids.  After 24 years of marriage it was hard.  My ex and I now get along and she invited me to Thanksgiving.  My mother refused to go, so we did not.  She is ok to talk to at my son's home, but I am glad we are divorced.

I know two people who divorced after 40 years of marriage.  One of those was left pennyless because her husband had a second mortgage on the house, she didn't know about.  I don't think she will ever recover emotionally, nor financially.

In Florida and Maryland, after 20 years of marriage, and only one working spouse, the courts are fond of awarding Alimony for Life.  I was lucky, mine remarried after about 5 years.

Ulrich I am following your designs and wish you luck with your build and move.

Ulrich, I like the house plan, but I still haven't figured out how you get from the Bedroom to the bathroom.... Doesn't appear to be a doorway into that side of the house from the bedroom and whatever the other room is there.

Difficult to see, but the path seems to be blocked by what are actually storage cabinets above the doorway in the kitchen.

Here is the "Path to the Bath":

Charlie, you got off cheap! The last service on our 2014 Honda Odyssey cost us $2800.00Crying and it was all routine work.

Wow!  I just had my yearly service done for my Volt...  That included such major things as NYS Inspection, Tire rotation and a complete vehicle diagnostic thingy.  I thought I had to pay way more than it was worth!  It came to $96.59!  It would have been $35 more than that but I refused to have them change the motor oil.  It had only been 14,000 miles since the last (and only) oil change and since GM said I had about 48% of the oil life left I told them forget about it.....  Of course since it is driven primarily on Electric Power I figure I'll get the oil changed next year or so...  LOL  I am using the Fossil Fuel thingie more now that I am driving to the Rochester area quite often to see a lovely lady there..... I will be driving to RIT in a couple weeks for the Tiger Tracks Train Show, and if I am lucky, I can get there completely on Electric, plug in at RIT (for free) and then drive all the way back to my house on electric too...

Ulrich, I like the house plan, but I still haven't figured out how you get from the Bedroom to the bathroom....  Doesn't appear to be a doorway into that side of the house from the bedroom and whatever the other room is there....  I am sure I am missing something, but...  That should be very comfortable for the two of you.

I have added a bit to my running and today ran 5 1/3rd miles over at the fieldhouse.  After stretching out I only walked 1/6th of a lap before running the first 8 laps.  Did take 3 short breaks but ran a total of 28 5/6th laps.  Felt good!  Now if only I could convince the power walkers who pass me while I am running to slow down, I would feel good....Whistling

Good Afternoon,

Cloudy today but it is about 30F which is warm for us.

Soon I have to head out for a hair cut and then off to the gym to do a few laps.

Yesterday was an expensive one with the car. I went in for an oil change and $600 later I was done, in more ways than one. Nothing but maintence stuff. Oil changes are now $170, air filter(installed) $100, etc. I know I can get it done for less but that is the price you pay for the service level you get at this dealership. While waiting a salesman told me he sold a Range Rover a couple of weeks ago and it was $156,000. That is in CDN dollars mind you so about 115 US, but still. Doubt I'll be buying another car there. Making plans to be buried in my S80, hopefully it will be at least 25 years old by then. There are a few Volvos around town that are that age. I could have replaced the air filter myself but it is an involved process especially in the

York1, you are sure right about dog intelligence although they do vary a lot even within a breed. The Westie we have now is by far the most intelligent dog I have ever known. A while ago I was getting his supper ready and I said to him, 'Hey Robbie, your bin is empty'. He immediately took off for the spare room where we keep the bag of dog food and where we were feeding him. I thought he was just anxious for dinner and was going to his feeding spot. No he ran ahead of me and stood in front of the food bag. How on earth did he figure that out. I certainly never taught him. If he wants something, all you have to say is 'show me' and he will run to show you wherever the treats are, his toy is located, etc. Somethimes it is really uncanny. If my wife tells him to go the living room, get(name of toy) and take it to Daddy, he will do all 3 tasks.

Yesterday my copy of Speed Graphics and Steam 1958, Vol.2 arrived! Another great book by Ian Wilson. I plan on staying in tomorrow and examining it carefully. Not only are the photos great they are put togther so it is like following the photographers in their car when the took them. Lots of train info too.  So that took a little of the sting out of the car bill.

I also went to the hobby shop and took in some N scale stuff to sell. I'll be down to one steam and 5 diesels. I might sell off the last steam too. Perhaps I should sell all of it but I put a lot of work into that little door layout so am reluctant to just ditch it.

See you soon,

CN Charlie

Good morning, everyone.  It's a beautiful clear, cold, frosty morning.  Too cold for the trail, so the field house had to do.

Ken, our thoughts are with you.  Hope things can work out.  You have a lot of friends on this forum who support you, so know that you are not alone.

Since you have an intelligent dog, you might like this:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-7751605/Whos-clever-boy-Dogs-understand-human-language-better-thought.html

The study found that dogs are much smarter than previously thought.

I've only been railroading a short time, but evidently the neighbors are onto me.  Yesterday a friend dropped off this map.  The date on the map is 1943, but I don't know if that is just a copyright date or what.  The map shows every military base in the U.S. in WWII and the train lines connecting them.

Have a good day, everyone.

Ken, congrats on the staying off the cancer sticks, sorry to hear about your troubles with the wife, I hope you two can sort it out and come to a compromise.

So it finally happened, the MSMRC has fully disavowed my existence. I terminated my membership about a month and a half ago at which time I was removed from the messenger group where most of the bullying/harassment took place but I remained in the private FB group for the club, I was still in said group as of last week, I discovered tonight I have been removed from it as well, I did not share my experience in the group or post to the FB page for the club so they had no reason to ostracize me like they have.

Rod never called me back, I don't know if he tried straightening them out or not, perhaps I will give him a call tomorrow.

The car situation, seems every two steps forward I take one back, patience is key I guess.

Later.

I know what it feels like to be in the situation. There were some guys in our club who did not want me there due to my age, but they generally kept quiet about it. If we had a formal club and not a round robin club, I would most likely not be in it. This hobby needs to be inclusive and encouriging to survive.

I better finish my schoolwork so I can start building the diorama I said I would set up in the local mall this sunday...

That sounds brilliant. I will keep that in my file of nifty ideas if we ever make another month long trip.

I thought that was a pretty neat idea too.  Never had the occassion to try it out yet, but maybe someday!

We got into it Monday and I told her Yet Again "We need to see a Marriage Counsellor".

Hey, somebody has to say it, right?  Truth be told, that didn't work for my father-in-law either.  What did finally work was him going to counseling on his own to work on "his problems" to help their marriage.  After a few meetings, the counselor sent a letter home with him asking my mother-in-law to join for the next session so they could discuss his problems.  That led to them attending a few sessions together, and ultimately to her attending some on her own.  Worked wonders.

This is the "In sickness and in health" part of the vow that sometimes we have to face.

True to a point.  At some point your own quality of life has to come into play.  If my wife went totally bonkers and tried to kill me, I wouldn't stay with her due to some wording in our marriage vows.  Extreme example, I know, but you guys get the point.  More relevant example, before they both passed, my grandfather's Parkinson's disease was making taking care of him extremely difficult on my grandmother, but out of love, and reasons stated above, refused to place him into any sort of care facility.  It finally reached a point where my mom/aunt/uncles had to step in because grandma was literally killing herself taking care of him (Wasting away to nothing.  Wouldn't eat as she was too busy taking care of him, or too tired from taking care of him.)  Depending on the situation of course, but at some point, somethings got to give.  I had this whole point stated better previously, but when I hit submit, it disappeared.  If it comes through overly harsh, that's not my intent.  Just trying to provide a little perspective.  Nobody should be forced to live like you see on TV.

Well, break is over so back to a busy week at work.  Cheers everybody.

Lunchtime!

I haven´t had a burger for quite some time, so I think, I´ll go for a virtual one - with all the works!

I finished the house planning and now start on writing down the specs - at least those where I want to have different things as the builder´s standard specs. A/C is pretty much a waste of money in a climate like Denmark, but a good heating system is a must. So the A/C will have to be replaced by ceiling mounted infrared heater panels, which should come cheaper as the included mini-split A/C system. It´s not going to be a long list, as their specs are pretty comprehensive. I will, however, take the time to determine the number of electric outlets for each room. because that can end up being a major cost item.

Btw - Petra is happy with the kitchen now. All is good!

Ken - I am sorry to hear about your marriage woes. Ed is right, in my untrained opinion. Putting pressure onto Sue will result just in the opposite of whatb you want to achieve. All you can do is to "nudge" her into accepting professional help, because that is what she needs. She shows all signs of a hoarder, even if your house doesn´t look as bad as shown on TV. In Germany, we call a hoarder "Messie", and that´s a quite suitable description. I wish you all the luck you need, my friend!

Today´s Maine video feature shows "Steam & Sleighs" - enjoy!

Happy times!

Don't worry about that for me -- the thought alone counts more than you know. Is there any hope for the nerve damage to get better?

.

It will not get better on its own, and surgical attempts have a low probability of success. It is very intermittent, and I usually feel numb before it happens, so it is rarely a surprise.

.

If I keep my right hand in my pocket and hold my right elbow with my left hand I can control it in public.

.

If it gets a whole lot worse, I would consider surgery, but for now it is manageable.

Water Level Route
The oil (assuming you used enough) floats on top of the water and seals it from the atmosphere=no water evaporation.

.

That sounds brilliant. I will keep that in my file of nifty ideas if we ever make another month long trip.

.

Thank you.

Doughless
It should be turned 90 degress and the rooms/boxes rearranged.

.

Yes, if it was turned 90 degrees it would match the rest of the houses in the neighborhood.

.

The fact it so obviously a hogh-density-development design is what bothers me the most.

.

There are only six unbuilt homesites in the neighborhood remaining, so we will not be seeing many of these.

House insides does not look like Horder's house like a TV show horder but it is getting there. Sure does not look like what I grew up in!

.

My father's last wife was a terrible hoarder. The last time I visited my father at Christmas before he passed away, the house was almost impassable on the inside.

.

I don't know how much of it was my father's doing as well. He always had a tendency to hoard, but his previous wives did not put up with it. He finally found a kindred spirit.

You are out of a bad situation!

.

I have shared in here before my experience and the situations that led to me leaving Scale Rails of Southwest Florida in the early 1990s.

.

There were two sides to that story.

.

Here, 25 years later, both the club and I are still thriving.

Steven,

You are out of a bad situation! Take comfort in that and don't look back.

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
