Hi Steven,

Nice to see you back in the diner. Too bad about your truck troubles.

You were talking about getting a boat er, rather, a large car. I used to love driving the full sized cars. I had a couple of used Caprices and an Oldsmobile among others.

Unfortunately, the last Caprice turned into a major money pit. One thing after another failed, and I'm not talking light bulbs. I had to have the engine and the suspension rebuilt. I thought at the time that that was a wise investment because otherwise the car seemed to be in great shape. Shortly after dropping several thousands of dollars into those projects however, other crazy stuff started to go wrong. For example, the baffles in the plastic gas tank broke loose so the fuel pump would starve when making a left turn. That was $1500 plus installation.

Over six years that I owned the beast I put almost $15000 into it. Stupid! Dumb!! I should have known not to buy it in the first place. There was a gallon oil jug in the trunk!Dunce

Cheers!!

Dave

Speaking of "Open mouth — Insert foot" situations, I was a witness to this one.

A group was touring our GE facility. Several of us employees were nearby when some of the group started chatting, small talk, you know. My friend/cow**ker, Bill, casually asked one of the women in the tour, "When are you due?"

She replied, due for what?

"Your baby, when is it due?"

Hoo-Haah, talk about a red-faced moment. Fortunately, the woman was graceful and my Dunce friend was apologetic. He has always been like that, just says what comes to mind, no "common sense" filter, you know.

As it turns out the woman in the group became his supervisor about a year after this happened Surprise

I tried to give him some "fatherly advice" but I really doubt it sunk in. He really would do some incomprehensible things. I haven't seen Bill in a few years. Hope he's doing OK.

Cheers, Ed

Had to take an engine up to the engine overhaul shop, so called in to see the boys that built the three Mosquitos. No Mosquitos on the go, but something for the plane spotters.

Good Morning!

The sun woke me up this morning! After a week of wet and windy weather, it´s nice to see the sun again!

It´s my birthday today. I am 63 years of age now and yes, I am of age now. With this day, I now have officially joined the ranks of the retired folks, after having been in preliminar retirement for medical reason for a while now. I feel a little strange about it, but that feeling will settle when Petra surprises me with my favorite birthday cake! I´ll bring some next time I visit the diner!

Ed - a quite similar thing happened to me years ago when I congratulated one of my female staff. She felt quite embarrased that moment, as she hadn´t yet noticed she was pregnant. A week later her doctor confirmed it and the now proud mother-to-be asked how I could tell. There is something in the eyes of a woman whe she becomes a mother, maybe a sparkle, I don´t know, but I had a pretty good record of being able to tell at an early stage of thenpregnancy, before it showed.

Happy times!

something for the plane spotters.

Okay Bear, be like that! Make me look like a dummy!! The best I could do was spot a RR Merlin engine (I think) on a stand. I want to say that the green fuselage is a Hawker Hurricane but I'm probably wrong.

I will wait with bated breath for the really smart guys to identify the aircraft.

Breaking the news! Hold the press!

Miniatur Wunderland has now officially announced their plans of an extension via a bridge in to the building on the other side of the canal. There had been plans to make a model of Great Britain, but they have been scrapped in favor of outh America. This extension will be a joint venture of the Martinez family of Brazil.

More detail in the following video. Click on "settings" to turn on the captions and select "English".

Hi Ulrich!

Thanks for the Miniature Wonderland video. It is so amazing to see these guys work together knowing that they are creating fantastic new additions to Miniature Wonderland. I really admire the fact that they are not sitting back. What a way to make a living!!!

  Happy B-DayCongratulations, Ulrich!  Cake

You and I are only thirteen days apart (I being the senior) and I am thankful that the years have been kind to me. I wish you well, old boy!

Thank you for the update on the Miniatur Wunderland. That will be a fascinating undertaking to see. I have a friend in Brasil. He will be thrilled to hear of the news.

Happy B-Day Ulrich, I just hope that if Petra bakes you a nice birthday treat, there may be some left over that we can sample! Dinner Whistling

And a very belated Happy B-Day to you, Ed.

Okay Bear, be like that! Make me look like a dummy!!

No, no, no, Dave, that is definitely NOT my intention! I’m only trying to help stimulate the “Little grey cells”, which blokes of our advancing age need to keep brain atrophy at bay!
You’ve correctly identified the Merlin, though it is bolted to the aircraft’s engine mount frame, and as a clue, two of the aeroplanes are British, one is US, though the fourth one in the back corner, which I wasn’t including, is also from the US.
BTW, If you click on the photos they should get larger.

Hi Bear,

I was just kidding about you making me look like a dummy! Thanks, but I don't need any help in that regard. I can do that all by myself, and recently I seem to be getting quite good at it!Smile, Wink & GrinLaughLaughLaugh

Seriously, I can hardly wait until someone more knowledgable identifies the various occupants of the hanger.

I have to say that I am rather envious of you JaBear! I can't imagine how happy I would be to be able to work with people like yourself who dedicate your lives to keeping the old birds in the air! It gives me goose bumps every time I see an old warbird or Beaver flying just as they were intended to so long ago!

Cheers!!

Good morning.

I tried to sleep in this morning since it is my first day off since last Sunday Monday.

I had to work through the weekend since I will have a short week this week.  We are going up to Wisconsin to visit the mother-in-law and my brother-in-law for a nice four day weekend.

I'm beginning to believe trying to sleep in is just a waste of time when you are used to waking up at 5:30 to 6 everyday.  That sort of thing only seems to work when it's dark and raining out.

Those planes are cool Bear.  I like old planes just like old cars and old ships.  Old steamers too of course.  My favorite war plane is the Corsair.

Happy birthday UlrichHappy B-Day   I have eight years to catch up with youSmile, Wink & Grin...... Thanks for the crumble cake.   Delicious!

Congratulations on the new job Jimmy.

TF, I know what you mean about sleeping.  I have been retired three years and I still wake up as I did for years.

If you're interested in planes and you are near Phoenix, be sure to go to the Commemorative Air Force Museum.  They have great displays of planes, and they have some WWII bombers they still fly.

Congratulations, Jimmy.  Hope you love the new job.

Also, Happy Birthday, Ulrich!  I doubt I will ever visit there, but if I did, I would make sure to see the Miniature Wonderland.  I enjoyed watching the video of it.

Bear, you have an interesting job.  I know it's work to you, but it would be a great thing to see each day for most of us.

Steven, if at your young age you ever finally figure out women and their emotions, please tell the rest of us.

Speaking of Mesa, AZ, another place near there is the Arizona Railway Museum in Chandler.  It's a great place spend the day walking around and through pieces of railroad history.

It's time to head outside and take care of my nemesis  -- the lawn.  I fight the urge each week to pour chemicals on it, kill all the grass, and have bare dirt that doesn't need any care.  The only good thing about it is when I'm done, I know I won't have to cut it again for several days.

Have a good start to the week.

81 years after the last train had roamed the rails on the Carribean island of Barbados, a new railroad has been opened for service!

York1

Thanks for the leads on Arizona.

A Plane Museum and a Train Museum would be something I would really be into.

Kind of ironic.  Judy and I have been looking for more creative things to do when we go to Laughlin Nevada on our free trips.  After three times there we're looking for more things to do.

How can you refuse a free trip?  The places you speak of are about four hours away from there.  Nothing a rental car and an extra Hotel hotel can't handle.  Judy also has more places she wishes to visit in Arizona.

Although I will never go there again in the summer time.  I do not like a 115 to 120 degreesLaugh

We went to go across the street in July like we usually do when were down there in the Winter to the dollar store for two gallons of water for drinking while we're there.

After about twenty paces we looked at each other.   It felt like our heads were baking and our eyes were Popping out of our heads.  We turned around and went back to the casinoLaugh

That was some heat

Thanks John for the info

TF

PS.     I never understood the Mexican sombrero hats until I was in the heat...... Now I do!
