Nola?  Nolans?  New Orleans?

I don't know either.  I've never been down south in the Summer, only in the Winter.

We're going on our second free trip to Laughlin July 14th through the 18th.  It's supposed to be 110+F.  It's 95 and humid as can be in Minnesota right now.  Maybe 110 and dry is betterIndifferent

They say it's a dry heat.  I must say I do not like hot and humid but hot is hot isn't it?  I'm very curious about this one.

Maybe I'll switch to vampire modeLaugh,  stay inside during the day and go outside at nightYes  I like The Nightlife sometimes.

I don't know I was just in NOLA last week and it was heat index of 105. No mosquitos to speak of but you could cut the air with a knife.

Most people wouldn't believe it, but in all the years I lived there, mosquitos were never a real problem.  Of course, I lived in Mid-City, and I imagine the mosquitos are much worse in outlying areas.

I would bleive it, because mosquitos don't breed in the river ( moving water)

Stagnant water, small ponds and swamps.  People stack old tires outside, that's where you're really bad mosquitoes come from.

I never fed my goldfish and koi in the Little Pond I made in the backyard. They had plenty to eat.

I couldn't believe how big they all got by Fall when I brought them inside and put them in the pig bin in the basement.

That's when I learned you never take a koi out of the water.  You coax them into a bucket to transfer them.  It creates Havoc with their air sac if you take them out of the water.

They jump out of the water for air to try to get there air sac back to normal.

My dog Nellie came upstairs like Lassie and told me one of them was outside of the pig bin on the floor.

She was jealous of the fish but still she came upstairs and told me.  I'll never forget thatSmile

Very hot and humid again today -- temperature 95°, dew point 77°, heat index 110°.  We're surrounded by thousands of square miles of corn fields, with center pivot irrigation systems spraying water into the air.

Went to the small town of Deshler, NE (Population 750) for a train show today.  The train store, Spring Creek Model Trains, gets the show together.  It's pretty amazing that this small town, with the nearest city of more than 50,000 people a hundred miles away, puts on a train show that draws people from several states.

Came back a little inspired and with some good ideas for my layout.

Normally we visit one of the daughters for Independence Day, but this year I think one of the families will come here.  The grandsons love blowing things up with me on the 4th.  It's funny that I get upset spending a few dollars at the grocery store, but will spend huge amounts of money at the fireworks store to buy things to light on fire.  And our dachshund is deaf, so the fireworks don't bother her.  Lots of fun.

I lived in NOLA for 12 years including Mid-City and don't recall mosquitoes being bad, but I do remember humidity so bad that it was like breathing in water. Laugh

It's always good to talk to someone from there.  I worked at a school on Canal Street.  What got me sometimes was that you could get up at 5:00 a.m. and it would be so hot and humid you wanted to stick your head in a refrigerator.

Yeah, it was nice to wxxk inside today at the dummy grouting job.  Wasn't so bad after all because I was working inside with AC.  I like AC on days like today, what a great guyLaugh

When I stopped at Wine & More Warehouse to get a 12 pack of Amstel Light on the way home, I did spend a little more time in the cooler than I normally do.

Had I had a deck of cards and a small card table, I would have set up shop and played Solitaire in there for a whileLaugh

Nothing like a cold one on a hot dayYeah

 Afternoon Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer and Ulrich what he wants.

Man I am tired and my shoulders hurt! Cut off 4 large branches that where 4 to 5 inches in diameter that where hanging low. Cut them up and dragged to the front of the yard for pick up. Hacked some more out of the over grown front pourch. Starting to look like real people live here again. All so got the front yard cut!

Best news for today? Dwight my 92 year old neighbor got to come home today from the nursing home! We where going to go see him Sunday but don't have to now.

Train Front. Well I am done with steam for a while. Just got sick of the current lack of traction problem due to smoke fluid. The PPR I1sa could not drag 15 coal cars and a caboose last night! So tonight on the main line I am running all SD 7's and 9's! Big Smile

Ed Running the B&O SD 7 #784 and she is a champ! It is dragging the I1sa coal train with not a problem!

Well it is now 60 days with out smoking! Later none smoking Ken

...but hot is hot isn't it?

Yeah, HOT is HOT!!

However, the amount of water vapour in the air directly effects the ability of sweat to evaporate, the higher the humidity the slower the evaporation, hence the slower the body cools.

I’ve worked up in the tropics, and can tell you, with certainty, that I am suited to a temperate climate!!

Cheers, the Bear.Smile

PS. We’ve just had seven days of frost, though with sunny days, but spent a cold, and frustrating day trying to sort out a recalcitrant float plane on the lake. It was great to get home last night to be greeted with a toasty fire, a bowl of corn chowder, and a couple of bacon butties. Luxury!!

Cool.  My Judy just brought in my August MR magazine.

Chicago and Northwestern in Appleton Wisconsin.  SWEET.

I stayed at a friend of the family's Mansion for the weekend in Appleton when I was in 10th grade in high school.  Wow what a weekend that was, I lived Like a Rockstar.

I haven't been back there since but that town knew I was there when I was thereLaugh

Time to go read.

Weather can be pretty freaky sometimes.  Judy told me a week or so ago after she had watched the morning news, that it was snowing in Colorado.  I think a couple of weeks before that she said it was snowing in Montana???

. . .They say it's a dry heat. I must say I do not like hot and humid but hot is hot isn't it? I'm very curious about this one. . .

It is true that a dry heat is more tolerable than when it is humid. As was mentioned, the body's evaporative system does a very good job of cooling. The sweat evaporates almost as quickly as it surfaces, give the illusion that you are not really sweating. After a while in a dry heat, try rubbing your forehead. It will feel almost gritty. That is all of the residual salt from the sweat. One of the biggest mistakes visitors to the desert southwest make is not to drink enough, and not to replace the lost electrolytes. Since you are never "sweaty," it is common to forget to drink. Two words -- Don't forget!

As to your question, "Hot is hot isn't it?" my answer is at a point, yes. When it is dry, as long as there is a breeze, 95 is comfortable, 100 is tolerable, but once it clears 105 it is just hot, I don't care how dry it is.

They sure do a good job on upkeep and paint in Osceola Wisconsin.  I always did like this boxcar,  how about you?   They use it for a work shed I think but it sure does look nice.

Good Evening,

A nice day here, about 88F but it was fairly humid.

TF, you were asking about the Niagara, St. Catherines and Toronto. It was a short electric line that ran both freight and passenger. It interchanged with CN and was owned by CN after the formation of CNR in 1918. I have some photos of it in a book about CN steam in the Niagara area. The 'wire' was pulled down sometime in the '50s. It ceased all independent operation in 1960.

Not much done today.

Ken, there is a family of racoons resting on our neighbours roof right now. The house is a side split and they are sleeping under the overhang of the upper level. The little ones are sure cute. I expect they will be down in our pond as soon as it is dark. I was just at my opthamologist this week for my semi-annual check as I have glaucoma. There sure is a variance between the different methods of checking pressures. My doc has no use for those air puff tests.

The other thing to remember is that the dry air allows for major swings in the temperature. The mornings could be 30+ degrees cooler than the afternoon high. Since we don't observe DST, the sun is up by 5:00am and the temperature is managable until mid-morning. Also, there is always the pool...

Those are really good.

I remember back in the late 70s.  My friend Mike was tripping...... yeah you know, it was the seventies.  I had two boxes of those Klondike bars in the freezer.

He wanted one, he wanted one, he kept paying me $5 a piece for those bars.  I was smiling and laughing and selling them to him for $5 a piece

It was a fun night and I took all his money.

In the morning I gave my friend Mike all his money back and told him to pick me up two more boxes of Klondike bars because he ate them allLaughLaugh

Mike was so happy that I was such a good friend.  He put four more boxes of Klondike bars in the freezer that night.  The roommate thing.  Do you guys remember that crap.

Don't know about the air puffs.  There used to be a hand held scale they set on your eye, but I have always had that blue light that stick in your eye.  Once the topical anesthesia didn't work.

I have an aunt in her 90's that decided her glaucoma eye drops burned too much and stopped taking them and is now blind.

Racoons, did I tell the story of visiting a friend at his weekend vacation home.  I arrived just seconds after he shot a racoon off his chimney with a shotgun.  He said there were 2 but he didn't see where the second one went.  Next we we met again and he found out where the second one was.  It was August too.

60 days without ciggys is pretty good.

We maxed out at 97.  Winds came through and lowered temps to 77 but by the time it actually thunderstormed, it was back to 86.

Yep..... I remember that one part last time I was there.

I think everything will be good, they did have a really nice pool.  I never swam in it though, there was too many other things to do.

Richard book a trip.  It's so cheap and fun you'll have a ball.  After you pay once they fly you down there and Lodge you for the rest of your life for free..... you have to use your players card.  I guess they just like old folks gambling down there.

I paid once,  I've been there four times

Evening folks,

Thought I'd stop by...

Yes Louisiana is air is thick! When its 90+ and high humidity good luck breathing!

Today wasn't too bad we've had a below average summer as far as temperatures go.

Still at the Y, lotsa drama going round, I'm doing my best to stay clear of it.

I haven't had an off day since last Saturdayand won't until the 4th, then again I'll probably get called in that morning, so I'm banking on next Sunday, and I worked two shifts yesterday and am scheduled to do the same next Friday.

Thought I had a girl on the line, this is one I met back in March, she was trying to get a job as a life guard, we've seen each other every other week or so for about two months and we really hit it off, well now shes got the job and we've been talking/flirting back and forth for about two or three weeks a lot of cat and mouse stuff, I really haven't made any passes mostly shes been doing some advancing.

The other day I was hanging out after work and we were talking about music and I was saying how I sing big band music, she said "really what songs?" I broke out with Moon River and she almost swooned we did a duet through most of my catalog, it was truly amazing!

Sadly turns out she has a boyfriend... yeah... and we're currently just "good friends", which is still worth it, this chick is a model, knows about cars, can sing and act, and shes a looker so I'm glad to have made her acquaintance and will gladly be "friend zoned" for the present. If she is single eventually I'll take my shot, if not shes a good friend to have, there are other fish in the sea.

Nuff said about my relationships with the female of the species.

Finally started driving my truck again, still got a broken transmission but is drivable, the Overdrive one way clutch failed, using the electronic OD lockout allows for normal operation in 1st thru 3rd, its $1750 for a rebuild and will probably do that this fall.

I'm currently planning on taking the motorcycle licensing course in Zachary, I've been considering getting a motorcycle for a while and this would be the first step.

Also considering trying to learn to play guitar, and electric guitar that is, not going to be doing hard rock or metal, mostly softer stuff maybe some classic rock.

Much to the delight of my mother I am seriously looking at attending LSU in the spring, I now actually have a reason to stay, I'm in a good place at work, although still single I've got some good avenues that are worth pursuing, anyways...

I need a vacation, trying to get my parents to either 1 let me go to Miami/Palm Springs for a long weekend or 2 we go as a family, we shall see.

Anyways that brings yall up to speed with me, I'll give the jukebox a dime to play a new fave if mine.

Later guys!

Steve

I would encourage anyone to go to Branson Missouri for Christmas

Just don't take the scenic route out of town to Memphis.

Next we we met again and he found out where the second one was.  It was August too.

Pheew! Did he have a damper in the fireplace? It would have been flopped on top of it. I've heard of critters making nests in chimneys. Disastrous results. High CO levels in the house. Deadly!
