Good Afternoon!

Pretty miserable day here, wet and windy, but rather mild. All the snow in the south is gone, with a danger of flooding.

Henry, when I think of trains in India, a luxury train hardly comes to my mind. Instead, I see pictures like this:

Howdy ...

We're headed to Nashville this morning to see my wife's mother again.  Her condition has improved, and she was moved from the hospital to a nursing home a couple of days ago.

I'll catch up here when I can.

Have a nice Sunday, everybody.

Me again!

We spent the entire morning searching for places with affordable rents, which are not those Eastern Block concrete slab places.

The only place there seems to be is actually my Mom´s home town, the eastern most city in Germany, right at the border to Poland. Actually, the city is divided, with the part on the western bank of the Neisse river being German, and the eastern part being now Polish. It´s a pretty town, which escaped bombing during WW II, but was subjected to socialist decay until 1989. The whole town was fortunate to receive a complete renovation and has turned into a jewel. There are plenty of affordable 1 or 2 bedroom apartments in beautifully restored 19th century houses available, as younger folks don´t find jobs. It has turned into a city of old age pensioners, which suits us fine. Petra and I will go there to take a close look.

Just to give you an impression of what I am talking about:

Happy times!

That looks nice!  I didn't watch whole thing, but nice.

I sure wish you and Petra the best, in getting out of your current situation.  It's tough to read some of your post, and not being able to do anything!

I haven't won the lottery, so all I can offer is my best wishes.

Ulrich I wish you and Petra the best finding a good place. I wish I could move you all here.

Garry have a safe trip to Nashvegas.

Trains of india i always think of the crowded trains like the video Ulrich showed.

Not as cold this weekend but that will change Monday night as the next "clipper" system moves through.

I have been on call this past week at w*rk and did not get to leave most days until after 5 ( normally I leave at 3:30 ).

I fixed my neighbors PC, it had gotten stuck in a boot loop and I did some voodoo on it and it worked. I put it back and walked away before it decided to break again. Well back to the basement, Mcintosh amps and a pile of radios awaits. One day I will get caught up.

Afernoon everyone,

Flo, put on a new pot of decaf for me to drink while I watch the fun going on up the street from my house.....  evidently a water main break about 6 houses up the side street.  We got two backhoes, four trucks and about 8 or 10 city guys running around and getting the street blocked closed, and ready to start digging.  I, of course have a wash going down cellar...  good timing I guess.  LOL  I did see a stream of water running down the street to the catch basin when I left to do grocery shopping earlier.

I should be heading out to a Gospel Choir Festival at a local church but don't think I'm going to make it.  It is a fund raiser for a Scholarship fund here in town (not the one I am treasurer for) named after a former president of our MLK Committee.

Manét (my cat who has cancer) threw up on the bed in the middle of the night so I am washing and drying the bed sheets and the comforter as well as doing my usual weekly wash.

While I am down cellar I havw been working on some odds and ends for a bank on the corner of the Business District in Kanadaqua on the layout.  Inside the bank is a photo of the Bank President (me) named "Larson E. Pettyfogger" (from one of my favorite comics W. C. Fields).  Ive been making some wooden doors to offices inside the bank (the inside is actually the walls of the corner where it will be placed).

Oh.....  As of yesterday I transitioned from being Obese to just Overweight.  Yep lost a couple more pounds and now weigh in at 192 lbs.  That means I have now lost (over a twenty year period, but...) 133 lbs.  43 of those in the last 9 months!

Have a good one out there in cyberspace.....

Good Evening, Crew! Just having my last mugga joe for today as I sit in my uninsulated backyard workshop/pipe smoking lounge. The electric heater is on and I'll leave it running all night as it's supposed to get down to 8° tonight here in my part of NE Ohio. Although the workshop won't be warm in the morning, it won't be breathtakingly cold, either, for me morning pipe and coffee. Some snow shoveling intervened today and I didn't get around to laying out the turnout and track centerlines on the table but next week I'll do it, I promise. Smile, Wink & Grin I shopped around for cork roadbed and have some stuff ready to order, but I'm wondering if the available "#4/#6" cork turnout roadbed will fit the length of a turnout made from a Fast Track's jig. Hmmmm....more research is needed. Idea Have a good one, Guys! Thumbs Up

I just looked at national radar, looking at the huge blob of snow coming at us, supposed to get about 12" when it's over mid day Monday.  Fun fun, Sigh

Here in the Mid Atlantic it was over 40 today. A heat wave compared to nearly a week with daytime highs in the 20's.

But todays weather is more typical of our winter daytime highs. We just get a few weeks here and there in the teens or 20's.

As someone who does not like the hot humid late summer, I will take a few weeks of cold for the otherwise temperate but variable Mid Atlantic fall, spring and early summer.

Being close to both the mountains and the sea/bay, we enjoy weather that can change quickly, but is generally pleasant.

60 degrees? That is perfect outside construction work temperatures, without the rain of course.

Good evening all.

Zoe - How about some peppermint hot cocoa please. Thanks.

Mike - I will take your 12" over my forecast. It is for a brief warm up, with rain, switching quickly to freezing rain, then switching to snow. With anywhere from 8-12" by Tuesday morning.

Kevin - I will trade your 55F for my forecasted high for the next week. But especially Thurs forecasted high, of a whole -2F.... Before wind chill. Add in that, we are talking -45F. (We need a frozen moji for here....)

Ken - Any word from raccoon guy?

Weather - Cold and snowy tonight. Interstate 90 was shut down for a while today due to multiple crashes from idiots forgetting how to drive in snowy weather.

W*^k - Great day Wed and Friday, not so great Sat sales wise.

Hope all are well, and all enjoy the night!

I don't remember where you live Mike.  We are good in MD till Wednesday. It looks like it snows all the time at Horseshoe Curve and Chama.

Watched bits and pieces of the Rolex 24 at Daytona.  I don't understand the 4 different car types, but Mercedes and Cadillac both had entries.  It rained for the last 8 or 12 hours and 50 cars wrecked at various times.  It was the kind of rain where, if you see others pulled over but you don't, today you would have.

Alex Zarandi raced with hand controls.  His legs got blown off in a racing accident in 2001.  Literally blown off and he went into cardiac arrest.  Quite a comeback.

I made major progress bending railings for my AMB caboose.  Still have to do the cupola grabs and glue them in, but everything fits.  Those little phospho-bronze wires can disappear in a heartbeat.

Did not get a lot done today. Flatten a few boxes from my wifes Hording Room. Ran the Dehumidifier in the hording room for 4 hours and now have the air purifier running in there. Did yet more running for the wife, I don't get why I have to do it?

Only good thing I can post is I got the paper shredder running again! Big Smile Good thing Sue found bank statements in the hording room from 1999? They have the full account numbers on them.

Sheldon Would you mind PMing me your phone number and time we could talk? I have so many questions and type real darn slow! I really need some house help, I am way over my head right now! Let me know in the dinner if you sent the PM. I seldom check PM's.

I am not going to preach about safety, but please keep this in mind.

.

This is the way I usually dress when working with any power tools.

.

.

Today I needed to make one small cut, and I did not put my gloves on.

.

You guessed it:

.

.

Please wear gloves and safety glasses when using power tools. Learn from my misfortune today.

Good Evening All,

Mid 40s here today. Did some cleaning and chores whilst watching The Daytona 24 which was pretty much washed out. I was lucky that the times I was at the race it didn't rain. It always gets miserable in the early hours of the new day though cold that goes right through you. Teams have it better these days but rain negates all of that. It rained enough the last 12 hours to cause caution periods and two red flag periods one of which ended the race. I know pro racing carries on but it was so bad that people couldn't see in all the spray (the diffusers in use now for extra downforce cause it) and more than a couple ran into a car they never saw in the sprau.

Spent some time laying out turnouts for the new yard. Got three in with the control rods as it takes about an hour each for the latex caulk to set up and secure the turnout.

I feel badly for what Ulrich and Petra are going through but as others have mentioned there isn't much we can do from here. We have come together from time to time to help out one of our number though I think effective help here is beyond what we could do outside of offering our prayers.

Just about time to tddle off and do the next turnout.     Catch ya later, J.R.

Radial arm saw.

.

I was cutting a thin piece of material, and it split just as the cut was almost complete.

.

I think the side I was holding was kicked under the blade, but on top of the other piece, and I was cut when the saw blade kicked it forward very fast.

.

I cannot be sure, it happened instantly. I heard a loud bang, then I was hopping around the garage holding my bleeding finger.

.

I know the blade did not get me.

.

I will also never again use the 10" radial arm saw for a thin piece of stock. I will get out the table saw. I have made similar cuts hundreds of times, but it only takes once. I am very glad it wasn't worse. It easily could have been a lot worse.

I feel your pain, Kevin.

Gloves, however, aren't always a good idea around rotating machinery. One of the fellows I worked with lost his hand due to a glove getting snagged on a cutting head and it pulled his hand further into the machine.

I hope everyone else is doing well.

Kevin,

I have to agree with Ed, I would never wear gloves with most power tools. Gloves are a problem for me in any event. It took me forever to get in the habit of wearing latex ones for greasy mechanical jobs and chemical jobs.

Other gloves just make me clumsy......

Radial arm saw? You mean to tell me those death traps have not been outlawed?

I will stick to my mitre saw and table saw thank you.

Snork = the sound of your favorite beverage coming out your nose.

We used to say that when we started IV's, especially on babies or arterial lines.  Dentists didn't wear gloves either, back in the day.  For years, I had blood on my hands almost every day.  I got over that misconception.

I do not deny that machinery can grab a glove or a shirt sleeve and drag you into it.

Good evening all !

Flo, could I get a Cornd Beef sandwich please ?

I spent 4 hour's in the Wal-Mart parking lot today.... giving away 6 puppies. ( We kept 3 for ourselve's )

Kevin: We have a saying here at Demon's Hollow,  " it's not a project, unless I draw blood". ( I tend to injure myself , at the drop of a hat.)

Several year's ago, I had a temporary job at a Christmas tree farm. We were out in the field bailing the tree's for transport. You shove the tree in one end of the machine, and it come's out the other end all wrapped up in twine. I somehow managed to get my Glove tangled in the tree as it went into the bailer,  and it ripped my glove right off my hand ! When the operator on the other end saw my glove, he feared the worst, and hit the emergency shut-off. At the same time, I held up my hand, to show him he missed me !

Yea.... me and "power tool's " dont get along very well ....

Rust...... It's a good thing !

I don't remember where you live Mike.

SE corner of WI., about 35 miles SW of Milwaukee, I-43 goes through town.  Looks like this blast is going to cover the whole state.

We've hardly had any snow all winter, so far, but the last couple of storms have made up for it.  About 12" on the ground now, with the next blast on the way.

Oh well, it's WI., !

I hate wearing gloves, especially running power tools.  The snowblower?  Yes, gloves. Laugh

Ken, glad your seeking help with your house problems.  Sheldon seems like the right guy to get it from.

I'm working on projects that have been sitting too long.  Finished some pellet hoppers, now on to a fleet of spine cars I started last year, no wait, the year before that? Confused  Ordered a bunch of stuff today.

Zoe - Can I get a refill on the cocoa please? Thanks.

Kevin - Ouch! Glad it wasn't worse!

I also dislike gloves with power tools, as I had a power tool (Dremel) slip while wearing gloves. No physical harm done (to me anyways), but lesson quickly learned.

Trains - Was working on a hopper kit, when a slope sheet caught (for lack of a better term) on the center sill (where it should not catch) during test fitting and came within millimeters of breaking off the end sheet and the "B" end bolster.

Time for some filing, and a break. (Before I break stuff.)

I will be back in the back corner booth, relaxing with my cocoa.

Hey guys,

Kevin, gloves can be good and bad, one story I heard a while back was a landscaper was messing around with the deck of his mower, needless to say the blades were on and two fingers went flying with his glove, they rushed into the business with said glove looking to ice the digits till medical help arrived. So I guess he's lucky the glove kept the amputated digits inside instead of they having to search the grass for them.

Ken, speaking of coons, my brother said that earlier today he saw a guy with a raccoon on a leash walking down the street! Not kidding!

Ulrich, I hope things work out for you guys!

Well time for the big news! Tomorrow is my birthday, but not just any birthday, my 18th birthday! So everyone belly up to the bar cause drinks are on me!

Well my stomach is killing me and I gotta get up early tomorrow so goodnight everybody!
