Cleaning and polishing NS rail with NS rail
Posted by dbduck on Monday, November 19, 2018 1:57 PM

I am curious if anyone else has ever used a short piece of NS track (3-6") to clean & "polish" the track on their  layouts.

I have been doing this for quite awhile now & seem to have decent success

This sounds similar to "gleaming" using a stainless steel flat washer.

Not sure how to do that.  Could you elaborate?

I take a short piece of scrap NS track 3-6"  in length flip it upside down  and at right angle to the layout track (rail head to rail head) & move it along the top of the rails with moderate pressure

Use it as you would any other type of track cleaning material or tool. Since both the track & "cleaner" are of the same material, density etc..there is vertually no risk of damage to the track....   scratching, pitting, nicking, etc
