Old Monogram model kit of a UP Big Boy
Posted by Real steam on Monday, June 4, 2018 5:21 PM

I purchased a Monogram kit of an UP Big Boy about 25 years ago (not sure of when but a long time ago).

Now that I'm retired, I broke it out to start to assemble the kit but can not find the assembly innstructions.

Is there anyone out there that has instructions that would be kind enough to E-mail a copy of them to me.

Thank you.

Here's page 1 & 2

 and the assembly drawings:

I've built a few of the Hudsons. They turn out pretty well for an inexpensive model. Have Fun!

Hope that helps, Ed

If this is what you’re looking for I can try to copy it and send it to you but I don’t think it will be an easy copy.  It’s one sheet both sides 12” x 24”.

I don't think I'll ever need it, I'm an SP nut and the Big Boy model went away many years ago.

You guys will never get there using those links.  You have to first go to: http://hoseeker.org/miscdiagrams.html

You'll see "miscellaneous HO trains".  Click on the upper drop down menu, "miscellaneous diagrams, and then scroll down to the 4-8-8-4 diagrams.

I've clicked on the links several times and they take me to the HOSeeker 4-8-8-4 page each time. Anyone else have this problem? Maybe it depends on which browser you have? Security settings?

[edit] Tried it in Chrome — works fine. Tried in MS Edge and I get a 404. Oh well.

Cheers, Ed

And I get the 404 message in Fire Fox.  I've never had any luck with diagram pages on HOSeeker, just the main page.  They seem to work fine right after you post them, and try the link, but after logging out, and coming back, not so much.

I think that's because it remembers that you were there before as long as you remain logged in.  But when you log out it thinks Elvis has left the building, so when you log back in you have to start again.

Did you try the link I posted above, http://hoseeker.org/miscdiagrams.html ?  Let me know if it takes you to the miscellaneous ho train page.  Normally you can get to the first or second level before the diagrams.  If it doesn't, then you have to get to the main, literature list, level.

OK Try this.  Click to enlarge.  In Firefox a second click makes it full size.

 EDIT:

I did a copy and paste from this post and the above picture is 1600 x 696 Pixels.

Yep, it works, I logged off, closed the browser, and logged back in, and it takes me to the page with Misc. Diagrams, front and center.

Mel's page works too.

Once you're on HO Seeker you can visit any link you want, but if you aren't already on, they don't allow linking into the specific pages, only to their main top page. That's why for the people that post such links to a specific page have it work fine when they test it. They do this to keep people from image linking their files.

Just out of curiosity, if anyone knows.

Is this the same kit currently put out by Revell?

I am also starting this kit, but would like to make it look a little more "USRA", and a little less "UNION PACIFIC".

.

What would be the suggested list of details to alter?

I am working on the model right now. Overall it looks pretty good, but the handrails are completely awful.

.

Any pictures of the model will need to be from a low angle to hide how terrible they are molded to the boiler.

.

Still looking for modification advice to make it look more like a USRA design.

Put a "regular" tender behind it.

Replace the smokestack with a single exhaust.

The biggy:  turn it into a 2-8-8-2.  Four wheel trailing trucks weren't used in USRA times.  And four wheel lead trucks on articulateds, for that matter.

You'll have to slide the front cylinders rearward to account for the missing wheel.  And likely everything else "up front".  And replace the trailing truck.  And shorten the smokebox to account for the moved cylinder.  And shorten the firebox to account for the change in the trailing truck.  SUCH AN ADVENTURE!  But a relatively affordable experiment, no?

It might be nice to change the sand domes to an earlier style, too.  To get ones to fit, you'd probably have to do them scratch, which would be a goodly bit of work.  But.  If you make them FIRST, and they don't work out, you can always still fall back on the original ones.

Sounds kind of like fun,

I am hoping to get this build done in one weekend, so I can't go too crazy. I think I can do a 2 wheel lead truck and convert it to a 2-8-8-4. The single stack is a great idea also. No way I can shorten the firebox.

.

I have another tender to use that is more suitable for what I want it to look like.

.

The running gear went together real easy.

I modified the front engine by moving the pistons about 1/2 inch closer to the front drivers. Then I built a two wheel leading truck using the kit parts.

To the OP "REAL STEAM", I am done with the instructions for this kit. If you send me a private message with your address I will drop them in the mail for you.

.

I worked for a bit on the modified front end and managed to get the pilot mounted.

I removed the front stack and found a surprise.

.

The piping around that stacks was molded hollow, so when removed it left a void on the top around smokebox. This will need to be addressed.

.

I am off to the laundromat. I will comnsider how to address this issue while I am there.
