Evening diners,

I'll take smoked pulled pork on a Hawaiian sweet roll with some mac and cheese on top...

Well the good weather had to end sometime and that time is tonight severe weather rolling through... weather channel says in KY theres two deaths and homes damaged from a "likely" tornado, reference to the MASH episode "for the good of the outfit"

Been working a lot  of overtime the past 2 week's so no time for myself. But tommorrow the wife say's "since I'v been a good boy" ( translation : since I gave her all my money) I get a new workbench from Harbor Freight. I'm thinking this would be a good time to get DH&P combocaboose out of storage and "FINALLY" finish it. Dont worry .... I will post picture's of my progress / paint smear's .

Hope all is well with everyone.  I'll be in the corner for the next 2 or 3 hour's...... "experimentin" with under/over cooked tuna...

It sure does seem quiet in the Diner lately.

Nothing to report from my neck of the woods. No train activity at all. I just look at the layouts and then walk away. 

We still have a large flock of Redpoles around our yard, over 100. They should start to leave for the north soon. I hope they don't come back next year, cute as they are we just can't afford to spend what we are now for birdseed on a continuous basis. 

We've been watching a little of the Olympics especially the figure skating. Nice outcome for the ice dance. 

Tomorrow is the last installment of the Victoria series on PBS. It sure is well done.

 Train Front Well I finally got the needed work done to the short line turnout done and it is working fine and was easy? Huh? Normal what shound be a easy project turns in to a pain in the caboose. It only took about 15 minutes?

 Got The Bessemer SD 9 Ed sent back on the rails! Replaced the DH 123 with a DH166D. I used the same CV's that was used with the 123 and the engines seem to be fighting each other a little?

 Went to K-10 Model Trains. Had a Proto 2000 USRA 2-8-8-2 with sound used for $249.00. Sure looked like my broken PCM Y6-b. Talked my self out of it.  Sigh

Pretty quiet around here, both in the Diner and at home. I guess that's a good thing. 

 

Glad to hear you have your Schwinn ordered, Dave. The Town & Country looks like it is a bit sturdier than the Meridian model. Pretty beefy reinforcement at the head-tube Yes. I see it is a three-speed with a Sturmey-Archer hub. I had to replace my S-A hub when one of the grand-kids chewed it up by shifting under load, which, of course, I told them NOT to do. Hmm

The "kids" are no longer permitted to ride grandpa's adult tricycle!

I hope you get lots of enjoyment out of it.

I'll stop by later for some of Chef Ryan's Homestyle meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy later... yum!

The tuna looks a little too rare for me if you are going to the trouble of searing it.  My wife won't tolerate anything the least bit pink, yet her father are raw ground beef sandwiches.

Doing my Internet railfaning.  One site watches West Newton PA where trains come by every couple hours.  The same people are chatting their for hours and hours about how much they love this small town and watching trains.  Then you go to Flagstaff, which almost had a white out, yesterday, and there are too many trains to count.  Horseshoe curve was fogged in last night. 

Bought a Bachmann DCC ready 4-6-0 at the train show and it came with a Lenz decoder.  I may try to install that, just to see how it goes.  I'd rather have sound, but I've never taken a tender apart.  I need to see how much room is in there anyway.

I tell 'em, Under cooked is OK, but a smidge more than RARE will send them back to the kitchen.

Too bad I had a steak that was beautifule rare on one end, and so I accepted it, but was almost well done at the other.

Oh well, I'll not go back there again. Besides they were a little pricy for a LION.

This is something so few people with dreams of their own business realize. Running your own business does not give you freedom. Running your own business is self-inflicted slavery.

My oldest daughter and her husband have their own successful roofing company. They both work seven days a week, have not had a vacation in five years, and do not have adequate time for each other.

They have four crews, and turn a net profit over $200,000.00 per year, but they work way too hard for it. They cannot ever stop beng aggressive, or they lose money. If they hire a manager to run things their annual income will be cut in half.

It looks like an awful life to me.

Developing a skill that an employer will pay for was a much better choice for me.

I just read your eBay business thread and thought I would reply in the diner since my response is a generic response, not model train specific. There are basically two ways to acquire products to sell on eBay.

The first requires very little investment, but requires a lot of time and effort. Basically, it is the "Garage Sale" approach. You find people or businesses that have things they no longer want and are willing to part with them at a price that leaves room for you to make a reasonable profit. Some people are very good at this and make a fair amount of money, but most end up with their own pile of junk and no buyers.

The second requires significantly more investment capital. If you want to buy something, anything, "wholesale" and resell it for a profit you will need to become aquainted with a new term, "Minimum Order Quantity" or MOQ. Nearly every producer of product has a MOQ you have to meet in order to get a resellable price for their product. The MOQ is usually at least 1000 units (unless you are dealing with very high dollar products). Some will sell you smaller quantities, but you will pay a much higher price that will not leave much room at all for profit.

Bottom line: Establishing a niche market in retail is difficult and takes time for it to establish itself. My son runs a very successful internet-based retail business, moving over 70,000 units last year. The company is ten years old and started in his bedroom. The first year he grossed less than $2,000. That was his gross, not his profit. His profit was probably less than $300. It was a "side-hustle" for at least five years (he worked one or two other jobs to feed his family while he built his business).

My son recently spoke to a group of young people about choosing careers and he gave the following advice:

Choose a career in one of the following areas in order to have a protected income:

  • Do something people can't do for themselves. An example of this would be a caregiver in an assisted living center. They feed people that cannot feed themselves.
  • Do something people don't want to do themselves. Your thought of a lawn care business is a great example of this type of employment. The risk here is that when there is an economic downturn, these are some of the first jobs to go. "I need to cut back; I can cut my own grass."
  • Do something people are not allowed to do themselves. An example here would be a brain surgeon. Typically, these are jobs that require a significant investment in education in order to be allowed to perform the service.

Just some advice from an old-timer. I guarantee it is worth every penny you paid for it. Good luck in finding the niche that works for you.

He is puting together a Markin layout, the same one (type) his father had in 1936, (his dates back to the 50th. anv. release in 1985), still has his last layout he built. He said that the cast metal is easier for him to maniulate. Has been having some complications with infections in his shoulder joints, and that has slowed him down. Petra is doing well---

The best part of the tuna is usually thrown away. There are two loins, centerline, from where the head is cut off the body, going forward to the nostrils, that we cut out of the head, marinade in terriyaki sauce, and grill over alder wood coals.  That is about the extent of my tuna eating. When I was 13, Dad cut up, and froze, just over 250 pounds of tuna. I have had it prepared just about everyway known to man. Makes a person look fondly upon rabbit and duck. Even oatmeal.

Took Saturday off for my birthday. I still think like I am 16 years old but Staurday I will be 62.

I felt the way when I was in my 20s feeling like a teenager of 16. Since I still watched Disney channel shows and movies. But that has changed since my last show was Gravity Falls.

It has been proven that age is a number. Not the fact of the aging body that fights against you.

This morning I weighed in at 231lbs.  Wasn't too long ago I tipped the scales at 325lbs. so I am happy with myself. 

Ray, congratulations on your weight loss! Well done!!

Right now I'm a little over 300 lbs and I am totally out of shape. I need a great big kick in the butt! (hopefully not in the form of a heart attack!!!)

Evenin' Folks!

Already had some BBQ chicken and carrots and an apple for supper.  The chicken was about 1/4 of a chicken breast, BTW.  I did finish off with a small dish of Ice Cream, but that is all I usually eat for my large meal of the day.  I am little by little losing more weight.  This morning I weighed in at 231lbs.  Wasn't too long ago I tipped the scales at 325lbs. so I am happy with myself.  I too would like to lose another 25 to 30 lbs.

 StevenO, I am one who likes to have his meat cooked (including fish) and while the Tuna looked good, I would have reacted like the guy who was a football player and became an announcer many years ago when he was in the ad and called the waiter over at the sushi bar and told him, "I think you forgot to cook this..."  Now a nice beef steak I like medium rare.  The asperagus is another story.  Love that stuff!  Unfortuately, for me that much at one sitting would have me waking up tomorrow morning in major pain!!!  That is a trigger for me with Gout!  If I have more than one or two spears of the stuff it triggers an attack.  A couple times a year I'll have a taste of some out at my son's house, but that is it.  I used to have a dozen plants right outside my house and gorged myself every spring.....

Trying to get enough stuff together to publish the next newsletter for my NMRA Division.  Need to get it done by the end of the weekend and out to the members.  Been working on a warehouse building for the Lisk Manufacturing scene on my layout.  This building is being assembled with old leftover parts from the Walther's Modulars stuff I have laying around.  Have just enough parts to do it if I don't screw something up...... This is an area I set aside several years ago and figured I should get back to it.  I was supposed to be building another bridge this winter for a Merit Award towards the Structures AP for the NMRA.  I will get to that whenever, I guess.

Sad thing is I have lost 26 pounds,

Please explain why that is "sad"! I'd love to lose 26 lbs., even more! I limit my portions, I don't go back for seconds and I rarely eat dessert. My problem is two fold. One, I'm on Risperidone which makes weight loss very difficult, and two, I drink too much! That is my worst vice!

OK, OK, I get it. I scold folks all the time for ruining a good slab of beef for the same reason. Next time I grill tuna steaks I'll pull them off the heat a little sooner.

Sorry Steven, but I'm with Ed on cooking tuna steaks. I don't want it dry but neither do I want it still kicking. Strangely, I can do suchi just fine!

She was served a burger at a high end restaurant a while ago and it was pink and juicy in the middle. I thought she was going to toss her cookies when she saw what it was like! Filet mignon - yep, well done for her please!

Hey, it's her food. She can have it as she wishes.

Home Owner Associations generally have jurisdiction over the exteriors and grounds, otherwise known as "common elements."  Unless there's something unusual in your state allowing it, they have no control over the inside of the house or condo.  Example, they can dictate what color the outside is painted, but they may not be able to tell you what color to paint your bathroom.  Most HOAs do require some type of architectural improvement form if you want to replace Windows and doors.  In that instance,even though you pay for it, the Windows must be approved because most associations want a uniform appearance.  HOAs also contract the painters, the landscapers, the pavers, etc.  That is what most of your assessments go to.  I don't know of any HOAs where anyone on the board gets paid anything.  

HOAs have their good and bad sides.  While they do regulate and perform the above mentioned services, sometimes boards can attract some real tyrants who want to restrict everything.  Generally though, most regulations are for the common good and safety of everyone.

As a legal note, when you sign the contract to close on a house or condo, you are consenting by signing to the jurisdiction of the association.

Now, I know what an HOA is, but what is a PITR?

Not much is happening. I been playing my Star Wars Battlefront II game a lot. It's been keeping my mind clear instead of trains which is 90% of the time. 

Recently I been planning to go the store to finish my supplies to finish my little layout. Maybe next week or sooner.
