Peco small curve vs. large curve turnouts
Posted by northeast_train_guy_1965 on Thursday, January 25, 2018 10:07 PM

Hello Everyone,

Well, it may be straying away from prototypical representation of a railroad but I have found Peco’s curved Turnouts an excellent option to squeeze Turnouts into my 4’x9’ layout to add operational flexibility. I have used the long curve SL-88 and SL-89 which have a 22 radius outer curve and 18 radius inner curve to create a dog bone  inside my inner loop of my double mainline.

Does anyone know the radius of the outside and inside curves  of the small curve SL-86 and SL-87? Hoping it might be 18 radius and 15 radius for entry into a very compact industrial zone with short Boxcar, coal hopper, tanker, or gondola traffic.

The table is actually 5’x9’ with the extra foot split in half, 4.5‘ for the control panel/work area and the other 4.5’ reserved for a future staging yard or lead-in to a possible 3’x5’ L-shaped extension off  the main layout

Hi there

There is a chart on

http://caldernorthern.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/pecoturnoutdimensions.pdf which give the dimensions as being 60 inch inner/30 inch outer.

I have a similarly tight layout where I have used a Set Track curved point ST-244 or ST-245 where the radius is 19.875 outer/17.75 inner. These radii matched the standards set by Tri-ang in the 60's which became Hornby in the UK. The switches are fully compatible with Peco track. The rest of my layout used Peco flex until recently when I changed the curves to Set track curves because of a few breakdowns with the age of the track. Different combinations meant I could achieve the look of the compound curves I had anyway with very little modification.

Hope this helps,

Regards from Australia

I did a copy and paste of the actual size Pico SL86/SL87 drawing from their web site and worked it up on my CAD and I can firm Trevor’s Pico info measurements as 30” Inside and 60” Outside.

I have a pair of Pico SL86/SL97 on my layout and they work perfectly.  Atlas sells curved turnouts now listed at 22" Inside and 30" Outside.
