While investigating a fatal car accident last night (12/18/04), I slipped down an embankment and over a box culvert falling 10 feet. I landed on my right shoulder and seperated it severely. And yes, Im right handed. Ill be off work possibly 6 weeks and will find out tomarrow if surgery is needed. What does this have to do with railroading? Well, I won't be doing much of that either with my arm and shoulder in a sling, but I will be hanging out here more and typing left handed I guess. Just letting my friends here know what happened. Wish me luck tomarrow! [|)]

Well I can certainly relate to you situation. I took a pretty good spill off of a roof a few months ago.
I also fell about ten feet, breaking three ribs and collapsing a lung. I'm better now, but it took time.

If I can offer advice, it would be for you to take it easy and not over do it. Think of it as a really painful
vacation.[8D]

Anyway, good luck and get well soon. Dave

On the bright side, your left hand will get lots of exercise!

Ewwww! Yucky.
Sorry, just put in my first reaction. I dont' know if this'll help, but you know how the old saying goes, It'll feel better when it quits hurting!! I know how accidents go, I cut the ends of three of my fingers off, right down to the bone. It'll grow back, and you won't even remember it happened.

Hope you can avoid surgery, and Get Well Soon,
Greg

That is alot to be shouldering on a 6 week vacation.

We used to do blacktop, a co worker got too close to the madly swinging Backhoe (Ford 555) and got hisself knocked out. We laid him out in the shade and let him sleep. 6 Hours later he woke up with all his lights on. Only to see his pay docked 6 hours for sleeping.

We did send him to the doc and no issues there. But get well soon and think about all the wonderful ways to use that left hand.

Jamison--I sincerely hope you heal quick. Rotten thing to have happen anytime to anyone, but especially to a fellow MR over the Holidays. I'll pray for a quick recovery for you. In the meantime, if you don't mind me saying so, being a leftie, you may end up finding out why scissors should be outlawed! Or at least re-designed.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Good Morning;

I really feel sorry for you for all of the pain that you have and will have in connection with this bad fall. On the bright side it was only the sholder, as it could have been much worse. It'l give you a good reason not to go out it this misarible weather.

I pray for a speedy recovery

Have a blessed day and remember SANTA FE ALL THE WAY

Well, at least you fared better than the people that were in the accident. Just take it easy. Too much too soon will just stretch that 6 weeks into something longer.
I hope you have a Merry Christmas and that the New Year has embankments with better footing.

Ouch!!!!! I can relate to the seperated shoulder as I have had one once. I fell of a ladder fighting a fire. I agree with every one on no trying to do to much to soon. Stock up on train books and just take it easy and get well.

There is no such thing as a bad day of railfanning. So many trains, so little time.

I am sorry to hear of your accident. Things like that can happen very quickly.

I belive that most all of us realize emergencys occur and that people need help. The diffrence is that there is a lesser percentage of us that belive we can help and then do so. Then there is the very small percentage of us that truly belive that they are the ones that should be called in any emergency. And are.

Thank you very much

Joe

**UPDATE** 1:45PM 12/20/04

Wow!! Thanks for all the kind words and encouragement!
I just returned home from the Orthopedic specialist. He tells me I have a stage 3 seperated shoulder and as it stands now, no surgery will be needed. I will be off work for at least 2 weeks and then back 1/2 days for a couple weeks, so the news was better than I expected. Thanks again everyone, you all made my day![:)]
I am on some pretty stiff pain meds and get tired fast (which is probably good) so Im off to the recliner for awhile. I have another appointment with the specialist in two weeks and will know more then, but for now, no sharp knives for the shoulder! [;)]

jamison,

Sorry to hear about your accident. On the other hand I want to thank you for being there when people need you. That there are people like you is truly a blessing.

I know it's hard to do, but listen to your doc, rest up and you'll be back up sooner than you'll know it! Of course you know have the opportunity to catch up on some reading (the times I've been out of action was an excellent time to go through some back issues, always fun to see an article a couple years later - whole new perspective), do some surfing and plan that next project!!

Hope you and yours have the best of holidays!

Dave

P.S. I am also sending out my thought to the friends and family of the accident victims. There is always something that makes one be more aware of the hazards out there and to appreciate our own good fortune.

It's great that no surgery is forthcoming. Enjoy your two weeks and the recliner. You'll never get another Christmas and New Year's off work together, I'll bet! [:D]

See what happens when you are NOT playing with your trains, Get well, lots of rest, one bit of advice, you will get some gentle excersize advice from a therapist after your shoulder heals, keep at it -it really helps. Fast recovery, now you can read all those articles you've been meaning to read.

He's right, I broke an ankle a few years back, it involved the ligaments and surgery to repair everything. The therapy was hard but I kept at it, knowing I could get back in a cruiser sooner if I worked hard at it. Glad you don't need surgery, hope you're back in a car soon.
I only fell about 3 feet, on ice and ended up with a leg in a cast and 4 months of therapy.[xx(]

As long as your sense of humor was not fractured , you will recover nicely.
At least you can be here and we can keep you electronically in company.
All the best on a fast recovery.[tup]
