Great mini drill
Posted by RR_Mel on Monday, October 23, 2017 1:31 PM

Great mini drill.

I have not received any compensation for writing this content and I have no material connection to the brands, topics and/or products mentioned herein.

I don’t normally brag on Black & Decker tools but their little VPX drill is very powerful and has a removable battery so its easy to swap the battery when highly used,  It gets into very tight spaces.

This morning I needed a 1” hole in my layout through ½” plywood.  I used a 1-1/16” hole saw and the mini drill did it easily.

My wife bought it for me about 5 years ago and I’ve only used it for drilling small holes, this morning it earned its keep.

Mel,

Is this the one?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000UMJJ3C/?tag=ataofhoco-20

I have a B&D power screw driver but seldom use it as the direction/trigger switch is so poorly designed that it is difficult to use.

Over the years I've probably used every concievable type of cordless drill/driver from my first Mikita 7.2 volt to today's 20 volt Lithium Ions.

My current favorite is a Bosch DDB181. It is compact (not a mini, though) and powerful and the battery lasts a very long time.

Thanks for sharing your information,

Regards, Ed

That’s it!  Where I was drilling this morning it barely fit but got the job done.

EDIT:

It looks like the VPX is discontinued.  I also have the B&D CSD300 screwdriver and its not worth the power to blow it to you know where.

I have an older version one before lithium ion came out.

I keep it in the junk drawer for easy access especially when it's cold outside and I don't feel like going out and digging through my truck.

It's always worked fine for me for things that come up around the house.

I have a B&D 4 volt powerscrew driver.  It lacks torque and is not much use unless you have a need to put screws in a warm stick of butter.

I have never understood the electric screwdriver.

.

A DeWalt #2 Phillips bit in my 3/8" drill is a near perfect power screwdriver.

The CDS300 is the most worthless tool I own, unless I would need to drill holes into butter.  It does work good for winding #28 or #30 wire on to small spools (very small spools), 180 RPM.

Not at all Mel.

Those little screw guns can come in handy sometimes.  I do have one.

There was quite a few sad issues posted in the Forum today.  It does sadden ones heart for the other members.

I was just trying to put a little humor into the evening.

Ok you got me.

Honestly I have one of those little drills I would never buy one but it was given to me for a Christmas present.  It stays in the junk drawer and once in a while it comes out for a little task.

In my truck on the other hand I run the Milwaukee 20 volt lithium-ion fuels with the double wide batteries.

There's so many add-ons to these tools, every time I think l'm getting close to acquiring the last one they come out with two more

One battery charge lasts for a better part of the week with consistent use.

Buy a Ryobi, with X-mas coming they will be cheap, like $79 with charger and battery and if you want a saw and two batteries and drill, last year they around $100. All my battery tools are now Ryobi and have even used the sawsall on a real construction job before the newer batteries came out.
