Model railroading??

What are the pros and cons of model railroading? Thanks, Stephen

No Cons, just all pros! It can be as satisfying as you make it!!! Above the costs you will find it a fun hobby to stick with. Stop, look , listen, & above all, learn!

In all honesty, the only Con I can think of is biting off more than you can chew. Alot of people (myself included) get burned out on the hobby early on because there's just SO MUCH stuff you can do with a layout, operation, etc. that alot of people get overwhelmed because they want to do too much too soon. I'm coming back to the hobby after about ten years, and I keep telling myself to work on one thing at a time and not get too ahead of myself. When I was a teenager (ten years ago) I had plenty of space, but lacked money and experience. I bit off WAY more than I could chew, and in my haste to get things done, wound up very unhappy with the way things were turning out. It's a long lasting hobby (one of the Pros) so take your time and enjoy it. Just because you're a year into it and it doesn't look like it's straight out of the pages of MRR doesn't mean you're not making progress. Take your time, and do things in phases so as not to get overwhelmed by the big picture and burn out on the hobby.

the only con i can think of is the following:

It used to be that I had a bedroom with some trains in it. Now i have a train room that i sleep in when the trains allow it.[xx(]

Cons--
1. It can take over your life, all your money, and most of your living space.
2. It repells women even more so than without being a model railroader.
3. Somethings are really hard to accomplish. Lots of frustration.
4. Finding enough space to achieve the operating goals for some people is impossible.

Pro--
1. I can recreate trains from the '50s and watch them roll through raw scenery.
2. I can own some of my favorite locomotive shrunken down in model form.
3. I get to be the HNIC and no one else tells me what to do with my layout.

There are definitely a number of pros of model railroading. However, I don't think they allow cons to have layouts in their cells?

Pro: I once had a basement that had many possibilities that became a monster layout that consumes all my time.

the only con i've found is Price, but other than that, its Great

a PRO is somebody who is very good at doing a skill
I can say that I do modeling like a PRO occasionally.

a CON is when you are tricked out of something.
I can also say that we as modellers are CONNED out
of money by the prices that continually go up.

Pro's? Happiness. Since he was 1 year old, my grandson has run around the house yelling "Choo-Choo" everytime he hears a truck or an airplane pass by. Last weekend I took him to his first train show, where he couldn't get enough of the layouts and the whistles and horns of the various sound systems.
I just finished setting up my now 20-month-old grandson's first HO set under the Christmas tree. He was asleep in his crib, and when he woke and came into the living room he was so excited to see that simple loop of EZ track that he couldn't stop the excitement that was coursing through him.
I laid down on the carpet, and he came right up along side me and laid down with his dear little face cupped in his hands. As I opened the throttle for the first time, his bright blue eyes got so big I couldn't take my own eyes off him and the wonderful smile he carried. He sat, unmoving, for over an hour, just watching the three passenger cars run around and around. As they disappeared behind the tree, he would anticipate the re-emergence of the train from the other side of the tree. Then he climbed up on my back and gave me the best hug around my neck!!! The entire time he just kept saying "ChooChoo", and later, as we took his older sister to the local mega-bookstore, he walked right to the magazine rack and picked up a new edition of a model train magazine. He also has Thomas the Tank and Percy HO scale locomotives, but when I tried to run them on the "layout" for him, all he did was point to the passenger set and pout until I put it back on the tracks for him -- he didn't want the "kid's" version of a train!!! What could be better than that experience as a reason to have a model railroad? Was there a down side? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pro's for me reliving alot of my childhood memories with my father and his trains
Cons He is not there standing beside me
I guess like alot it can become a monster The persuit of the ultimate railroad.How much is enough?If we were all given the resources{money space time} to build the version that we think would be the ultimate how many of us would stand back,upon completion and say if I would of only had ten more feet..I think it is a great hobby and worthy of all our efforts If it is something that you really enjoy then the cons are just minor flustrations soon forgotten when that favorite train rolls by your favorite section
of track work and scenery.
