Having been in the hobby off and on for more than thirty years. These new Atlas yellow box locos are a first (zero run time) . Got lucky on eBay winning three atlas locos. They came with goofy horn hook couples.
What type of kadees does one use for yellow box HO RSD 4/5 & RS-2 ? Do they require coupler boxes ?
Thank you for your time.

The "new" Atlas yellow box locos are actually 20-30 years old. Did you try going to the Kadee website directly? Here's the direct link to their Atlas HO conversion page.

Time...It marches on...without ever turning around to see if anyone is even keeping in step.
Kadee has a coupler conversion page on its website: https://kadee.com/conv/hocc.htm
Atlas models you find here:https://kadee.com/conv/hocc_atlas.htm
According to this page you need #38 couplers.Regards, Volker
Kadee #148 should replace the horn hook coupler installed on Atlas yellow box locomotives. The Kadee chart will show you an older designed coupler that you have to hack into the locomotive to insert their box. The newer #148 coupler have whisker springs so they don't need a box.
KD #5 or #148 will get the job done..Those "Yellow boxes" are the Atlas/Kato engines and certainly not "new old stock" since they're at least 30 years old..
BTW..I'm yet to find the need to use a KD coupler box like that chart shows. IMHO that chart can be misleading.

Hi,
I have a Atlas/Kato yellow box C425 that I installed KD#5 couplers on. I used the KD coupler box with the "ears" shaved off and they slide right into the coupler opening on the pilot of the loco then I used the friction pin that was used to hold the old horn hook coupler to secure the KD box. I believe some of the new KD boxes don't even have the "ears" any more. It works well for me and I believe I did this also with a yellow box RS3 and GP7 so it should work fine for your locomotives. Although I would use the 148s. You may have to do some slight trimming on the "lip" on the front of the box or even shave it off but it should work.

Thank you all ! For the record I realize these atlas locos are thirty years old. I meant these were the first yellow box atlas I bought.
