The inmates at the State Prison went on strike years back because they were being fed lobster so often they clamed it was "cruel and unusual punishment".

Some times you eat what the Good Lord provides, I can remember times when my children would have probably killed for a bologna sandwich, rather than lobster stew, or fried cod, or cusk.

Herrinchoker ... I have heard inmates in the Chicago city jail are served mostly bologna sandwiches according to reired Chicago policie officers I know. That should be enough to convince people not to violate laws causing them to go to jail.

Angel .... That Kato MILW train sounds very nice.

Henry,

Traps are checked every 2-3 days, winter fishing in deep water-50+ fathoms, once a week, if you can get out due to weather. I had one year that I fished on the 17th. of Dec. and did not get out again until the 22ond. of January, once, and twice in Feb. the weather did not let go until the 8th. of March that year. The wind was NW the whole time, when it wasn't a NE snow storm, and blew 20-35 the whole time. Ice on the hull is the main killer, on a little 38 foot boat it doesn't take but 3-4 inches of ice on the hull to destroy stability.

There is some predation in the traps, usually in the spring when the softshells wander in with a hardshell in residence, I don't think they last long. It is different than traping blue-point crabs. Do they still trot line the crabs using chicken necks, or is that a thing of the past?

Evenin' folks!

Janie, I'll have a prime rib dinner for supper tonight, and a glass of Reisling from Fox Run Vinyards please.  I'll order dessert later.

Well.....  A deep subject!  Looks like you folks may have to put up with me for a while longer according to my Doctor.  Yep, had my 6 month visit and physical today. He is pleased with everything he saw and signed my Boy Scout Health Form so I can go camping and sleep in a tent on the ground if I like.  I told him my sleeping on the ground days are pretty much over, but you never know.  Bloodwork came back in his words, "Excellent"  nothing at all wrong in it and most exceptionally good for my age.  Weight was steady, BP was 140/72 (considering I tend to have white coat hypertension he didn't even take it again).  A1C was 5.7, Total cholesteral was 139 and the HDL was 39.  The ratio between the two puts me in the 1/2 Average Risk for heart disease group.  Triglycerides were just into the high range, but for me very, very good.

The Nurse who took me in and did BP, weight, and medication history, etc. at the end of the interview turned and looked at me and said, "Were you a teacher?".  I laughed and said, "Were you a Student?" She roared and said that I was definitely the Mr. Howard that was her Middle School Music Teacher.  She came from a large family, most of which were tough kids to teach (a couple in the family, cousins of hers, have spent much of their adult life behind bars).  She was the exception and a real sweet young lady.  She still seems to be now.  I do cherish meeting up with these "kids", and it has happened several times in just the last couple of weeks.  Makes me feel good, it does.

Trying to get the last pieces to fall in line for our "Spring Meet" (NMRA) in a couple weeks...  I have to get word out to the members within a few days.  So I've been sitting here sending and getting emails much of today.  Looks like we will be able to do a "Round Robin" of mini clinics for the morning session.

Let BATMAN's experience be a lesson to you all... if something happens to your membership and you don't know why, ASK! E-mail me! In the thread where the infraction took place, after I cleaned up the mess I posted, "One of the participants earned himself a three-day suspension." That was probably supposed to be BATMAN. Since he never said anything, I had no idea the ban never lifted. Oops - Sign

Herrinchoker  How often do you check a lobster trap?  Here in Maryland, if you don't check a crab trap once a day, they start eating each other.  I'm told when Rockefeller was buiding his mansion and carriage trails in Bar Harbor, they "made" the workers eat lobster everyday.

YGW I should have said ultrasound.  Useful for cleaning stuff that gets carbon baked on it, like pistons, g*n parts or stuff that is just hard to clean like jewlery.

I didn't want to dissolve the control panel so I gave up.  There is still a samttering of paint on the resin car body..

Ulrich same weather forecast here, but thunderstorms are on the way tonight.

No train stuff today, cleaning out door furniture.

Yesterday it was 92, today it is 83, tonight it is supposed to drop into the upper 20s-low 30s inland, and upper 30s here on the coast. Sure glad we put all the plants that we wintered over outside. As Mark Twain once said," if you don't like the weather, just wait a few minutes." Time to bring in more fire wood, gotta love it!!

Neighbor hauled his and his wife's (five ea.) recreational lobster traps today for the first time, one day layover, and caught eight 1 1/2, 2 pound lobsters, weighed 11 1/2 pounds total. Back in the day I considered it good fishing if I averaged 3/4 pound per trap, but then I was fishing just over 300 traps, I would haul 150 per day, gave me enough of a workout without a helper.

ARF! ARF! Yep definitely gone to the dogs.

Good morning from the West Coast.

Thanks for the warm welcome back. I am still full from that prime rib last night, so just a pot of coffee for me.

Henry, I can't tell you what I did or I'll get banned again.Laugh I just woke up one morning and I was banned. I had no idea why until nine months later I got in touch with Steve and he told me why. I did break the rules and freely admit that. I guess my brain was off that day.

YGW, I have been watching the new train building going up with great interest. Beautiful country you are living in. As far as wardrobe goes, I preferred the stripes in jail because then I didn't have to change to referee the kid's hockey on Saturdays.Whistling

I think my days at the rink are over as the old arthritis is really grinding me down. #1 son is off to Ottawa for University in the fall and with the hockey season over he said his goodbyes to all the guys he has played with over the years. He had a final tourney in Calgary where he got the first goal for a newly formed team, plus they won gold. A complete turnaround after last year.

The kid was getting courted from Universities from all over the world. He wrote the U.S. SAT's and got 99% on the U.S. entrance exams. He wrote those in case he took some of the U.S. schools up on their offers. He got major high 5s from his headmaster as his exam scores push his schools ranking up. He scored in the top 1% on Canadian exams.

I am going to miss him a lot when he goes, we are best friends. I have had the kind of relationship that most Dads dream of having with their kids. He wants to get a Law degree in constitutional and business law and go into politics. By going to Ottawa, he will get to work in the parliament buildings as part of his course load.

Well, time to get to work. Wife had me totally change all the lighting in the kitchenCrying. That involved a lot of the ceiling coming down and much rewiring. I am on the home stretch.

It's a long weekend up here in Canuck land, that means a house full of friends this weekend. The mother-in-law says "why would you have guest with your house such a mess from the kitchen work". The wife uses that old adage "those that matter won't care and those that care don't matter"

Have a good rest of the day!

A little matter will move a party, but it must be something great that moves a nation.

A nation under a well regulated government, should permit none to remain uninstructed. It is monarchical and aristocratical government only that requires ignorance for its support.

Thomas Paine, Rights of Man, 1792

As parents, we can have no joy, knowing that this government is not sufficiently lasting to ensure any thing which we may bequeath to posterity: And by a plain method of argument, as we are running the next generation into debt, we ought to do the work of it, otherwise we use them meanly and pitifully. In order to discover the line of our duty rightly, we should take our children in our hand, and fix our station a few years farther into life; that eminence will present a prospect, which a few present fears and prejudices conceal from our sight.

Morning diners,

Yesterday I saw the pre-production models of the Kato MILW Olympian Hiawatha dome and observation car.

I know it's a nice 9 car set, but I wish they was a other car or two. Like a plain baggage car and a lounge car.

So I looked at Walthers Hiawatha set on their site and they taken out the passenger car consist. I then went to other sites but I found the one in train orders I believe that they had a good list. I saw a few movies on the train and counted 10-12 cars.

I still want to get one but I don't think I have the funds for it.

YGW- Yes that guy was lucky.

Good Morning, Gang!

It´s a bit of an odd day today, talking in weather terms. It´s rather hot and humid, and we expect a series of thunderstorms rolling in from southwest.

Anyhow, Ulrich´s Train Movie Theatre is back in business and proudly presents today´s feature, which takes us to the Spanish island of Mallorca in the Mediterranean Sea.

Ferrocarril de Soller

The Ferrocarril de Sóller (English: Railway of Sóller), acronym FS, is an interurban railway and the name for the company which operates the electrified 3 ft (914 mm) narrow gauge tracks running between the towns of Sóller and Palma on the Spanish island of Mallorca (stopping at various smaller towns such as Bunyola and Son Sardina).

The historic electric train takes a route north from the capital across the plains, winding through mountains and 13 tunnels of the Serra de Tramuntana, finally ending in the large railway station of the northern town of Sóller.

Work began on the railway in 1911 on the profits of the orange and lemon trade, which at the time was booming. For this reason, it is sometimes known as the Orange Express.

The famous train is now not only a mode of transport between these two key Mallorcan settlements, but also an attraction in itself.

In 1929, the line was electrified by the German firm of Siemens. Trains still consists of the electric rail cars ourchased that year.

This line is to my knowledge the only 3ft. gauge railway in continental Europe!

Enjoy this spectacular video of a cab ride through a breathtaking scenery!

Zoe, any of the prime rib steaks left Garry brought along yesterday. I´ll have mine medium, with French fries and a side dish of lettuce & tomato salad with Feta cheese, dark olives and Italian dressing, please. Add an RBF to wash it down!

Howdy ..

Jimmy ... I wish I could attend your presentation, but I'm glad you are sharing some of it here. Your photo of the railroad viaduct beneath the modern highway bridges is quite impressive. I am fascinated with railroad history.

Ed ... I like the CP dome observation car. I rode on one after Via Rail took over Canadian passenger service.

FRRY .... I like the Atlas CB&Q caboose. Actually, I do have one myself. I did not need to change to BN however.

It must be a cereal serial. Whistling

In that vein, let's try a riddle:

Why was the foodie put on trial?

Because he was a cereal/serial killier!

Hobby Front:

Latest quick project. Base is a redbox Atlas RTR. I've had this one for awhile. Two of the changes that were made very quickly after I got it. Those being changing the trucks to a pair of Atlas caboose Bettendorf trucks to match the prototype (None of the RTR caboose representing "Q" waycars of this type that I have seen have the Bettendorf trucks.) and the other was putting the ACI label on the car. The recent changes are painting out the "Q" lettering with some Humbrol silver paint and rettering to BN numbers with the BN decal set.

Thanks Ed.  Yeah, The East end is actually what I plan to model "When I paint my masterpiece", so I've  been researching and doing photo runs while I bide my time in building anything serious.  I'm gonna protolance it, and backdate in some places, so I can have a ton of industries to switch out.  No, I'm not planning to do the coke plant in Monesseon-that's gonna be a hidden staging track.  I'm gonna try to do at least two or three of the major bridges on that line, since that is what it's famous for- the long, high and impossle to fathom deck bridges.  A lot will have to be scratchbuilt-like the K truss Speers bridge.  More than likely, I'll do a double deck shelf layout so I can get extra layout space. Most likely, Rook yard will be on the bottom, and Connelsville will be the top and doing two levels would help to simulate the actual grade that exists between the points.

For an example of one of the more impressive bridges.  The Mingo Creek/Crookham viaduct.  Built in 1929.  No modern machinery, and just manpower. 195' off the ground.

WELCOME BACK, Brent! Bow

Just a quick HI to the usual crowd in here. The prime rib seems to have drawn everyone in! Not too many vegans here—?

YGW, the 40 chickens is a total for this season. I have set snares, I have hidden in a blind for hours with the .22 only to have the fox attack while I went in for a potty break. We do trap lots of raccoons and opossums and skunks (maybe dinner for LION?) but these foxes are a crafty bunch!

I hope your presentation goes well, Jimmy! Hats off to you for helping to preserve local history. By the way, I love the area you live in, so rich in railroad and STEEL history!

Thanks for the kudos on the brick mortar, Garry. It seems to be not-so messy as the usual drywall mud method.

Mrs. Pullman is waiting for a cocktail and dinner. My turn to cook tonight!

Cheers to all, Prayers to those in need...

For Brent— A little Canadian Pacific action!

Regards,

Well, It's next thursday.  I'm gonna have 35-40 slides, using my photos mostly- one or two slides of information and or historic photos correctly credited.  I'm also bringing in artifacts- Glass insulators from along the line, an old PWV envelope a club member let me borow, my model of the Bruceton train station-torn down before I could get a photo of it,etc.

It's going to be showing off my photos of the Connelsville extension, now known as the Wheeling and Lake Erie East end.  I will speak on the construction of the railroad, it's purpose, fun facts about it, etc.  I will be focusing on the section between Green tree 'Rook Yard' and Belle Vernon-the Rehobeth branch.  It's a line that is fascinating to study, and not many locals have seen trains on the line, since the Wheeling runs their trains on that line with no average pattern.

I'll also branch off to cover two branches-the recently reactivated "Clairton Branch", and the Abandoned "Donora branch".  The Clairton Branch was actually the original mainline for the West Side Belt railway Co, until the PWV offically took control in 1925, and the Donora branch was built in the late 1920s, and survived until 1988.  I've hiked the Donora branch, and let me tell you- that is some amazing grade work they did..huge long fills, concrete block tunnels STILL in amazing shape, not having had any work since the 1980s, and spoils everywhere along the line.

Hey eeryone- been an interesting week.

First, moving has been more of a chore than I could imagine.  Thankfully I still had all my trains stored at the club, so that was one less thing I have to worry about.  But moving all my hardbacks- MY BACK!!!  But, at least I have a place, with space to build a small switching layout- plus I found some old particle board I can use for the base of the layout.  Moving a Marshal amp-not fun.  Moving a whole bunch of heavy stuff in 90 degree temps isn't fun either lol.

I was asked to do a presentation on the history of the Pittsburgh and West Virginia railway Company for my local historical society next week, so between moving stuff and work, I've been doing my finishing touches on that.

I noticed my iPad was starting to act weird, but didn't think anything of it.  Well, yesterday, the screen started peeling away from the rear.  I took it to my closest Apple store-South Hills- and turns out my battery has swelled.  But, since it was an iPad2 and new enough, they will give me a replacement one for free, in exchange for the swelled battery one.  3-5 days until it comes in.

Also today- On my way to said south hills apple store- I passed a jumper's landing spot.  They jumped off the Joe Montana Bridges, which are over 200ft off the ground.  It must have just happened when I passed, because the police cars were already on the scene, as well as an ambulance..but nothing else was there.  After I passed the scene, I saw like FOUR more units (EMT,rescue service, etc) heading for the scene.  Bad news there.   Very bad news indeed, and really dampened my day, getting a reminder of how fragile life is, and how some people just need help but can't get it for some reason, and see no way out but that way.  Thoughts for his family.

Well, I work all weekend most likely, so I'll check in again sporadically.  Hope everyone has a good evening.

Brent ... It is good to see you here. Nice of Steven to work with you and get everything resolved. Thanks to you too Brent for making the effort to be reinstated because I recall you have much to contribute to the forum.

Ed ... I read your post about the foxes and the chickens/ducks. Greedy foxes. We have neighbors with chickens and foxes are a problem with them too. They have a big outside dog to protect the barn.

Alvie .... We use Hav-A-Hart brand traps to get rid of the chipmunks. The critters are unharmed but just moved to another location.

Brent you better tell me what you did.  i think I get close to the edge at times.

Started some tomatos and cucumbers in peat pots, in no time at all they were 6" tall and 1mm in diameter so I have started again.

My 18 year old deck is starting to show rot at the rails.  My neighbor has a deck and fence business and he came by today.  He said he repairs/builds for the neighbors at the cost of materials.  Unbelievable!

As far as I know, I never ate oatmeal.  Never.  i grew up on Frosted Flakes, which for the International Crowd in sugar coated corn flakes.  It will probably be partly responsible for my type 2 diabetes.  On weekends we would have eggs or waffles or pancakes.  Sometimes something we called Mishmosh, which was said to be an invention of my Grandfather" soft boiled eggs, cottege cheese and bacon.  The combination of cold and hot, soft and crunch makes it really good.  If you don't like it you can always add more bacon.

My resin car spent a couple hours in the sonic cleaner with 90% alcohol.  The alcohol got in a seam that held the label that identifies the buttons.  It didn't destroy the label, but I can't use alcohol anymore unless I figure out what will seal the seam and not dissolve.

Prime Rib served in the Diner?  Wow, I'll have a slice of medium-rare please with Yorkshire pudding of course, the way Mum and my Grandma made it too, not that hard, puffed stuff you get in most restaurants.

Seems as if it was a computer day for some of us. I finally installed new security software in our old laptop that is running on Vista. It seems to work just fine. I put in Avast after reading about what would work with Vista.

Not a lot new going on here. We will start some garden work this weekend as it is a long weekend here( Victoria Day) and so we like to stay home to avoid the crowds. It has been too cool to do much outide yet with a frost warning again tonight but the weekend promises to bring some warmer weather.

Nothing happening on the RR front. Haven't even run trains for several weeks.

Nice to see that Brent has been let out of jail.

Have really nice evening,

CN Charlie

Did somebody say prime rib????? I'm in! It has been awhile since my last visit and I have been living on jailhouse food,Dinner however, Sheriff Otte has let me out on parole. I will try to behave myself from now on. Nine months was too long and the gruel was getting old, especially when I looked in and saw what the diner was serving.Laugh

I sure got a lot done on the layout being under house arrest. Got my turntable in and running, runs like a Swiss watch, had no issues at all getting it installed and it was easy to operate to boot.

I have kept in touch with a few from the forum through E-Mail and finally got around (after nine months) to asking Steve why I was banned. He told me and I agreed to behave.

MMMMMMDOGGY my prime rib is here and it comes with Yorkshire pudding. A bottle of Cabernet, please. That prison still just didn't do anything for my taste buds.

Well enough of being a layabout, it's time to head out on the Deere and get the grass cut for the weekend influx of visitors.

Take care all

 Afternoon Diners

Flo, Ed, Jan and I will have a Beer please.

Felt worse today than in sometime. I am eating less to lower my A1C. Have no idea what my blood surgar was because of my wife!

SoapBox It is all about her! She laid claim to My Blood Glucose Montior sent to me by the VA. She wanted to keep it so she can test to see if she has low blood surgar. Her A1C has been fine. Mine on the other is out of control. Why, because I cannot test it! If I see the numbers I have a goal, with no numbers what the heck. Just got in a good fight with her and have laied claim to My Blood Glucose Montior so I stand a chances of feeling good again.

Train Front With me not doing any yard work I did some RIP work done. Oiled the Mighty CB&Q F7C but must have missed the needed points. Sounds like gears more than bearings. Will try cracking the trucks and lube them up. Did clear the Bessemer SD 7 that Ed sent. When using Decoder Pro I saw it had a DH121 decoder in it. The wrost Digitrax decoder they ever made! It now has a DH 123 in it and is very happy again! Big Smile

 Later, Ken

Good Evening Diners,

Ulrich, I hear you on the new computer. The setup is quite the hassle. I got my last computer a year ago and hope I will not need another one for a long time.

Ed/GMPullman, that's awful to hear about your chickens. Possums were horrible towards my family's chickens growing up. A hav-a-hart trap helped.

On the home front. My dad and I drove down to North Carolina, Sunday to help his brother and sisters clean out my late granddad's home. It took most of the day to load furniture and I didn't get back home until after 1am.

On the hobby front...

BLI mailed the new tether for my T1 yesterday, and here's hoping I can finally get this locomotive going.

While out of town I went through the house I grew up in, and found some old MR materials I'd forgotten about, including some old trucks, and many neat parts that'll be good for junk yards, detailing scenes etc.

I'm looking at my spare room and thinking about a shelf layout of some kind. Thinking I will start this autumn when the weather gets cold, depending on the usual, time, finances, resources at hand etc., but I'd like to start on some kind of layout as I've wanted one for many years now.
