In honor of Cinco de Mayo, I brought breakfast tacos to work for the two departments that I work with. And at 3, we'll bash a pinata!
Morning diners,
Ed- Thanks for the short history. Now I know they were real.
Ulrich- It's nice to hear that you'll doing fine.
Steven- Why is MRVP two dollars more than the magazine? What happened to combine lower price when you subscribe with the magazine?
Train News: I thought about hard about modeling Southern Pacific in HO. Although it was sounded I realized that I was in deep in N Scale. In restarting one railroad I decided to wait until SP/SSW gets more prototypical detailed in N.
Amtrak America, 1971-Present.
Ed, typically gyros is made of pork meat. We have a spin-off gyros made of chicken. Souvlakia again made of pork or chicken. I am impressed that you know Mythos. On the beer front, my favorite is from a micro-brewery in Maryland, Flying Dog, the Gonzo in particular. I sure like U.S. hops a lot, they have a rather unique taste in my opinion.
Ulrich, thank you very much for the warm welcome and it is very nice to meet you! My best wishes for a speedy recovery! Funny that you mentioned Kos island as i got a house and land there (which i don't visit often...). It is a great island with very nice and easy to get to beaches. Where are you from by the way? Rivet Counter sounds like a great name, i ll join in. Good call on the ouzo and coffee (though bourbon is nice too :D ). Do you speak Greek by the way?
Thessaloniki by the way is very famous for gyros by the way. If you ever visit you ll definitely gain a few pounds.
Yannis - I had a few years of ancient Greek in my school days, but I am afraid I lost it all - shame on me!
Kos really is a beautiful island. I hope it hasn´t changed too much in those 33 years since we spent our honeymoon down there. My wife and I enjoyed sitting under the great sycamore tree on the market square in Kos City, enjoying a nice cool glass of the local wine and watch the stupid German tourists buying all sort of overpriced souvenirs, mainly little statues of a well-equipped σάτυρος, accompanied by lots of giggles from the females.
I just love Greek food! Unfortunately, our favorite hang-out place εστιατόριο "Έλενα" closed down a couple of years ago and those remaining are not up the standard we are used to.
Back to trains!
I found this gem on Youtube - a view on steam trains in a country for many years foreign to us and just opening up recently.
Enjoy!
Edit: I forgot to mention where I am from. I live in a little town about 30 miles southwest of Hamburg/Germany, within earshot of the mainline between Hamburg and Bremen. From your point of view, it´s close to the opposite end of Europe, very close to the drift ice barrier!
Ulrich:
I'm glad to hear that you survived! Scary stuff!
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
Lunch time!
Gosh you guys have had me rolling on the floor today !!
I am very humbled today at w**k. My labor on site who is from Salvador and a devote seventh day adventist and whom I think very highly of, humbled me today. From time to time I buy his lunch or bring him home made food from home ( he is a young single guy no home cooked meals ) I have also been teaching and training him in management and construction skills. Today he bought me lunch. He doesnt have two nickels to rub together and he scrounged up enough to buy me chinese for lunch. Thats BIG sacrifice for him. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate his act of kindness....days like this make it worth being out here...
Hobby barn - FOILED AGAIN ! Went home unloaded more left over gravel, grabbed a snack went out to install trim and then oh geez no work to be done today either - rain all day !Well thats oaky I will be off to the NMRA meet !
Angel - Have you gotten your track installed ?
Tin Can - Have you heard the joke about Cinco de Mayo ? Two shipments of mayo was on its way to Central America from Europe, sank in a storm -the Central Americans were so upset they made it a national holiday and now they celebrate the day that was orginially called the sinking of da mayo ! okay you can boo anytime I deserve it !
Brakie - What westerns do you read? In my youth I LOVED Louis la Moure ( Mour sp??). Still I am impressed that you stick to a budget I am trying real hard because right now with the building of the Hobby barn my budget is 0 !
Ed - LOL - Thats you "in the middle" - I laughed so HARD when I read that ! Thanks for the history on Mr. Pullman. Boy I bet those folks were really ticked off 10 k to repaint yep I would be mad too. I laughed about dinner and lunch too. We had a steer we named "porter house " I ENJOYED eating him. That steer was the meanest most stubborn critter we ever raised ! I spent hours after school ever evening chasing him back in. He went through a three board oak fence with strands of barbed wire and electric fence inside of that ! I might as well have not even put up any fence at all, he paid no mind to it at all !
Ulrich - Phew - I was so worried about you. Glad you pulled through ! Take it easy and here is a for easy recovery.
Herrinchoker - LOL did your best to stay in the plane my best friend didnt make it through Ranger school because " he could see no good reason to jump out of a perfectly good plane " . Thats interesting about not setting sail on a Friday. Years ago I worked for a commercial contractor and he would NEVER start a job on a Friday for the same reason !
hon3critter - I agree I have a friend who is retired firefighter and he is having breathing issues from all of the stuff he breathed fighting fires..
FRRYKid - I am sorry to inform you - there is no known cure - it is so bad that I beleive it has been reported that they found O gauge model in the Pharoahs pyramid - he tried to take it with him to the next world !
ROR - Are you kidding me ! That is a hoot ! green jello pins !
Ken - LOL That is funny especially the part about spelling ! yep I think you have made a smart move unless you know who is there ! I can see the call now ! Hello Mrs. Cuda just want to let you know Mr. Cudas engines have arrived !
Tom - Have you considered going free lance and buying an H10 in HO scale and repainting it to your RR ?
Yannis - So glad you decided to stay we are all better for it ! Flo set Yannis up with what ever he wants except Eds goats ! Ill pick up the tab.
mbinsewi - Oh ! We have a similiar product here made by a company called Hardi-plank. There are a lot of manufactures getting into that line of product as people get tired of replacing rotten wood and demand something more durable and paintable
Larry - I am still impressed with your discipline. . I am so glad you are in here with us. I have always enjoyed your post.
Henry - The concrete does meet the ground. The area that is black is actuall "fdn coating" ( tar ) that is hot sprayed on the fdn with "drainboard" fastened on top of the fdn coating. For some reason the installer stepped it vs. installing it on a slope. Thanks for the positive comments.
Howmus - Better not "shoot the bull" or there will be no "Moo Poo" . I am sorry couldnt resist !

Glad you are back, probably why you did not answer the phone, will try again.

Ulrich, welcome back! Were you conscious for the helicopter ride? Did they have you outside the cabin in a bubble canopy, or inside?
I've only ridden in a helicopter once. That was a tourist flight in Hawaii.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
MisterBeasleyUlrich, welcome back! Were you conscious for the helicopter ride? Did they have you outside the cabin in a bubble canopy, or inside?
Although I was more than just a little removed, I was quite aware of the trip "inside" that contraption. It´s certainly an extraordinary experience I don´t want to repeat!
By the way, here is a picture of the heli:

Afternoon Diners,
Thanks Steven I'll call next week on Monday. I believe our business is closed on the weekend.
YGW- No I don't have track laid yet. But I have a lot investment into it.
Holy Moly Ulrich! Did you see the white lights and hear the music? I have a friend who said he did when he had a cardiac arrest. Glad you are back.
Yannis I wll have to try Gonzo That brewery is about an hour away from me. We have quite a few microbreweries around but far less than 100 years ago. We have a lot of state specific regulations on how much they can brew. Brew pubs also have onerous restrictions on everything from fire codes to what they can sell. Utah is really extreme in that regard.
Seems to me our local gyros are lamb. The last time I was in the local Greek restaurant, the cooks were from Mexico or South America. Ate lunch at an Italian restaurant today and the Hispanic girl that brings the drinks and food and clears the dishes didn't speak enough English to understand that we wanted the waitress so we could order. I think only the Amish market and a few asian restaurants have not embraced Globalization.

Flo, Ed, Jan, Ulrich, Yannis and I will have a please.
Ulrich Glad you had a life saving Helicopter Ride. Most of mine where life threating! Hard part of reppailling out of a Huey was not eating a skid. Being 6'3" I had to lean back 75 degess or so before I jumped of the skid.
yougottawantaHello Mrs. Cuda just want to let you know Mr. Cudas engines have arrived !
YGW Yes I am a some what worried about that. Plus they changed my days off this week. Not sure what I should do, tell Jerry The what I am doing so he does not refuse the package. Or would he call to let me know it is there. Plus (he is good at doing this) putting it where I will never find it. Yea I know I should not have done it. If Mrs Cuda had not mad at me for wanting them twices I would have never bought them!
Ed Congrats on the new babies! Not being a GM fan, I have never wanted a Goat but I am sure they make good pets. Are they something like dogs excpet they will eat just about every thing?
Yannis Any photo's you like to share? We like to look at photos, rather it be Greek Ruins, your layout or your home's.

That comment almost had me rolling in my living room! It prompted a good two minute burst of laughter. (After the day I had, I really needed the laugh. W*rk related which I will not go into.)
Hobby Front: I managed to get the stripe completed on one of the cars. I tried to get the stripe started on the other but I was trying a little too hard so I ended up giving up for the time being. I will try again a little bit later.
The decal sheet for the boxcar should be Monday. The drill bits I ordered is a no idea at the moment. (61-80. The set I had got knocked over and I decided cheaper to just order a new set. Didn't really like the box anyway. It was small and quite easy to lose.
Henry, you will really enjoy pork gyros if you ever visit here!
Ken, thanks for the drink! I got my layout thread which since it is work in progress looks like ruins to my eyes . How about a photo of one of my other creations?
YGW: Thanks for the drink!!! Cheers to good health!
Hey Yannis:
Nice model! What scale is that? That nose job looks to be hand painted. Is that correct? If so, you did a great job. Even if it was decals, you still did a great job!
Cheers!!
give Ken a double shot of silver rum, and I'll have the same.
Ken,
Just tell Jerry you have a package being delivered to the store that is a supprise for your "A" unit, and to not call the house and ruin the supprise. Luck with that.
Trains are a lot easier to hide than a outboard motor and a collapsable boat. Won't ever do that again. Ended up paying off the balance on her Ford Expedition.
Test results came back, heart has some additional blockage, less than the doctor thought I would have--what did show up was the COPD has advanced to the point where I am on a new med, if this doesn't work will be dragging a green tank around, or carrying an accumulator. I will know in two weeks. It is what it is. I told the doctor my only concern at this point is what the light at the end of the tunnel is--Glow from the Heavenly Host, or if the gates of Hell have been cracked open. Time will tell. Looking at 75, so I have had a good run.
Quite pleased with the results of the ATF, and the Mystery Oil. Have never had the trains run as well as they are. Got final clearance from the wife to move the second 4X8 section into the train room-(formerly 2ond. living room) she is with her son, so when she gets back will start on that, and then begin adding back drop, buildings, and coal mine. Was thinking about building based on the Maine Central that ran through Bath, Maine, but it ran from Portland to Rockland, and crossed the Kennebec River on two ferreys before the Carlton Bridge was built in the late 1920s, and I did not want to get involved with that. If I replicated the Carlton Bridge, which is doable, I would have to add another six feet to the layout, the bridge is .9 of a mile in length, with the track under the road deck, not gonna happen.
Luck with new addition.
Yannis,
Your B-25 looks like the one flown by the Flying Legends. They come to the Wiscasset Airport in the summer for about two months. If memory serves me the name on their's is Wandas Dream. They also have a F-4U, P-51, P-40, and one of the last airworthy A6M Mitsubishi Zeros, and a Navy SB-2C. Good job.!
herrinchoker
Jan all the best for good health! Thanks for the compliments, this particular BG was very famous in the Pacific (One squadron with bats, the other with falcons ...). This particular B-25C was piloted by Vic Tatelman (at the time) and has completed more than 175 missions (345BG/499BS).
Dave: Scale is 1/48, based on Accurate miniatures kit with several updates/corrections. The bat was painted blue using masks and then the sharkmouth, outline, eyes were all decals. Cowlings were all mask painted.
LION was in Bismarck on Monday... Him visit zoo, him visit RAMU (Him a TIGER... Him weighs 400 pounds. but him has a sweet disposition.)
Had RARE RIBEYE STEAK, maybe monks are not supposed to spend $30.00 on a lunch, but how esle is LION going to get RARE meat!

Good Morning,
A bright, sunny one here in the Great White North. Well it isn't very white now thank goodness. The leaves have just started to come out on the trees so birding will get more difficult quite quickly. Speaking of birding we are now doing our 'Birding and Breakfast' twice a week now. We usually see around 50 species in a typical morning which isn't bad.
Ulrich, that was a scary way to get a helicopter ride but glad to hear you are ok.
Not a lot new here. We did go to an opera last week, our first in quite a few years. It was Werther by Massenet, one of my wife's favourites and one that isn't produced very often so we wanted to finally see a live production. It was a little dissapointing but still enjoyable. We were very keen opera 'fans' in the '90s but seemed to lose interest in it. The local company isn't nearly as good as it used to be partly because they can no longer afford good singers.
Nothing new on the RR front. I did get the U2g out but still haven't made a lap with it. I think I will hook up a sound decoder with a speaker under the layout for those 2 diesels that don't have sound. My layout is very small so it should work ok. I can then just MU the sound decoder with the engine.
Yard work is on the agenda today. We were at a nursery yesterday and bought a few plants so I had best get busy. We won't be able to plant anything until the end of the month otherwise we could lose the plants to frost.
Have a nice day,
CN Charlie
Mornin' everyone!
Zoe, I'll have a refill for my coffee and a sour cream glazed donut, please....
49° and raining outside today. We have already had over 2 inches of rain this May. The average for the whole month is usually just ove 3" in these parts. Soggy, wet and cold outside. i am working on a major slide show for the MLK Dinner. Have about a thousand photos to go through and seperate into yuck and maybe catagories. From there I will narrow it dow to the hundred that will make the cut and be shown. Should have started it weeks ago....
Also trying to put together the program for an NMRA event the first weekend in June. It is a very late Spring Meet for the Division. So far I have 3 layouts open for the afternoo, and nothing at all for the morning program except we need to hold elections. One member suggested a type of program we did last about a decade ago which is a "round robin" event with about 5 or 6 different short (20 minute) programs that are repeated for each group of attendees. That just might work and I have two possibles already.
Ulrich! Sorry to hear you got a helicopter ride the way you did, anyway. Very glad you are recovering and still with us! Hang in there......
Best get back to w*rk or have lunch or sumpin"
Later!

I am in a chair in the sky returning from watching my son receive his MBA from Utah State in Logan. Yesterday it was in seasonably warm in Logan where it was 85. At the same time back home in Phoenix it was topping out at 107. It gives one pause.

καλησπερα!
The day hasn´t been as good as I had hoped it would. There is another build up of fluids in my legs, which is beginning to worry me. I felt fine when I left the hospital and yesterday was quite OK, too, but today has been not a thrill at all. This could be in connection with my strong dislike of the place and the surroundings we have to live in. Add to that all those nitty-gritties of daily life I was sheltered from in the hospital and, voila, I am back to where I started a few days ago.
This is not good! No, Sir!
I have just started watching a video on my favourite train of all - the Swiss narrow gauge "Glacier Express", run by the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway (MGB) and the Rhaetian Railway (RhB). The video was filmed by the Discovery Channel and is now available on Youtube.
It´s worthwhile watching:
I think the video will explain why I am so crazy about this train! At 13.50min, you can see the prototype of the bridge & chapel scene I have modeled on my layout!
Janie, it´s supper time, so I´ll go for some Moussaka, a Greek salad and a glass of red wine, please! And, if you don´t mind, switch on a little bit of Greek music, like "Zorba´s Dance" from the unforgettable Μίκης Θεοδωράκης!
Καλησπέρα Ulrich,
I hope that you get better soon, even though getting there might get frustrating at times.
That is really a great train! Very nice scenic route. I take it your layout is European themed? Any links to it?
Enjoy your mousaka! Next time you are in Kos, go visit Platani village, its not very far from town, some really good food there.
Richard, nice to meet you. Congratulations on the academic achievement of your son!
Greetings from the land of Buckeyes today there is a great mystery that scientist is looking into. There's a great bright orb in the sky that has everybody puzzled. Some believe its a bright UFO while others thinks it may be the return of the sun.Who's to say?
YGW,I read Westerns from Ralph Compton,Tabor Evans,Terry C Johnston,William W. Johnstone and Ralph Cotton since these are my favorite authors. I've read several of L'Amour's books. I don´t have my own home page, but usually post any update on my layout construction in this thread. My layout is rather small, just 3 by 5 ft., with a simple oval of track and a siding. It´s nearly completed, but still needs a lot of tiny details to be finished. Right now , I have started on the construction of the catenary system.
If the others do not object, I post some recent pictures here:
Here are the latest videos I made:
It all started about a year and a half ago, when my friend Claus helped me to build the benchwork.
I am the big guy to the right, but with quite a few kilos less since the picture was taken.
From the rather humble beginning in 10/2015, which looked like this:
the layout has undergone quite a transformation.
Sir Madog. . .If the others do not object. . .
Why would we ever complain? You work is a delight to see again (and again, and again...)
Evening Diners,
Ulrich- Watching the Swiss glacier documentary was very interesting. I loved how you modeled the chapel bridge and your layout.
Yannis- I liked the B-25C bomer paint.
LION- I'm surprised you paid $30 on steak.
angelob6660LION- I'm surprised you paid $30 on steak.
No big deal. I paid $50.00 once for prime ribs, but that was back in th '70s.
A typical lunch costs about $12.00 out here, a supper $20.
Yes you can go to Burger King or KFC if you are feeling cheap, but a basket of shrimp to go is $12.00. The seak was actually under $20, but you add a drink (diet pepsi) a salad tax and a tip (LIONS tip good... was told that monks were supposed to tip people well) and whale... there you are.
Wouldn't do it all that often, but what else am I going to do with money, eh?
