Adhesive Problem
Posted by RR_Mel on Thursday, March 2, 2017 9:13 AM

I bought the latest version of Stack-On 60 drawer organizer and the drawers no longer have divider rails for making smaller sections within the drawers.

The drawers appear to be made of Plastic #5 - Polypropylene (PP) as they have the    symbol on the bottom of the drawers.

What type of adhesive will hold Styrene strips as divider guides to the drawers.

I’ve tried all of the Testors plastic cements, several super glues and Insta-Cure.

Any ideas?

Dr. Mike's Model n Crafters ca is in a class by itself. I don't know about PP but a call to him should answer that. It's the only glue that I am aware of that will bond Delrin. The diaphragms on Walthers cars are Delrin and I use the glue to put on styrene rod to simulate a rib and make them look very nice.

I might try acrylic caulking compound.  I used it to stick plastic flextrack ties down to a styrene viaduct with great success.  You gotta clamp it til it sets, like overnight.  It stays sorta flexible, so the bond won't fail when the polypropolyen flexs.

Thanks, the Loctite propaganda does list it as a PP bonder.  Home Depot has it in stock so I added to my wife’s shopping list.

Thank guys!

Mel,

From what I have read that is supposed to work on all Acetal plastic's which is what Poloxymethylene is. Delrin is the same made by Dupont. I have been meaning to try it...would You please let us know how it works?

Having a similar issue installing styrene plastic drawer dividers in plastic storage bins, I used 2-part epoxy which has held up for a number of years with no issue.
Also, not quite the same issue as the OP, but I have used hot glue to attach styrene into small plastic containers, and that seems to be working OK although I have not really tried to bang them out so I don't know how well the glue holds in tension).

It wouldn't be especially pretty, but PL300 should work quite well.  Or a similar construction adhesive.

Thank for the input guys!

I attempted using my hot glue gun but clumsy me I was doing more damage than good.  I can use my hot glue gun when I have a lot of room to work with but not in tight places.  I have also had problems with the hot glue over time breaking down (3 to 4 years).  The glue becomes very hard over time then a bit of contact and it releases.  I used my hot glue gun (Craftsman) to attach hardware to the front label area on my plastic storage bins (screws, nuts & nails) for easy identification but over years most have fallen off.  The hot glue stuck the plastic the hardware fell off.

I’ve used AC with baking soda on Delrin, some times it works and some times it doesn’t.  I will give the Loctite a shot at Delrin too.

I found PL300 also works but not consistently, as long as the area being attached is large is works pretty good.  It doesn’t work very good with heat, it becomes sticky and releases.

Amazing Goop works very good on almost everything but its too messy to use to hold the divider guides.

I give the Loctite Plastics Bonding System an A++++ rating!  I works great on Polypropylene PP and Delrin.  It’s a two part CA, tube 1 is a Primer/Activator and tube 2 is Glue.  The bond is very much like using CA on a normal surface.

Thanks ED, I owe you one for that!

Ed I have to thank you again for pointing me to the Loctite Plastic Bonding System!

That stuff works so much easier for gluing in the drawer dividers that I did 30 draws in less that an hour.  There’s no slop or gobs of glue to clean up either. It’s hard to even see the Primer or Activator in tube 1 as you apply it and the glue in tube 2 looks and goes on just like CA.  The bond is as strong as CA on normal plastics.

Great Stuff!!!!
