I recently heard of a new show starting somewhere in the MD/PA area catering only to fine scale advanced modeling and not allowing any RTR or plastic. Any know anything about this show? It sounds like it could be a winner.

If it eliminates rtr or plastic that sort of limits it to brass or scratch-built, correct?
Is this the one you're thinking of?

If you haven't been to an RPM meet, Go! No judjing or anything but you'll see a lot of neat models in all stages of completion. They aren't all from scratch, most are dressed up or bashed from something already out there. If you know who Elizabeth Allen is or Harry Wong, that's the type of modelers at an RPM meet.
I attend the Marion RPM meets and you see a lot of scratchbuilt cars made from plastic and some locomotives that has been rebuilt into other types like GP11s or GP8s or road and yard slugs..Talk about advanced modeling with correct down to the minute details. Gotta love it.
Its well worth the admission price.

I went to one of these a few years ago in Massachusetts. Part of the price of admission was a tour of the Franklin & South Manchester with George Selios.
It's a show for serious modelers. The vendors have mostly detail parts and craftsman kits. The clinics are excellent. And there are no Thomas or Power Ranger tables, either.
Go if you have the chance. You will not be disappointed.
