Morning diners,

yougottawanta

Angel - You dont live in the present ? Is that just on the RR ? When I was younger I wished I could have lived in the period when teh west was being opened and taht I was a trapper or something liek that. Know up in years I am so thankful for gas heat, elect.roof over my head etc...Glad I didnt live in the 1800 now !

Although I live in present. I really don't understand the new technologies and new hip speech. I don't think I'll live back in the 1930-1970s to witness the real freight cars that used to roam the rails. A nice change to see real Amtrak rainbow era and ride the old superior passenger trains, like the 20th Century Limited, Coast Daylight, and others. But I was born to late. I do get the thrill with the toy models.

It's been at three days, but I tried to get not communicate. I got overwhelmed being around the computer/ internet and I needed a break.

Since I been gone I'll give you a small recap of what's happening.

Refixed the kitchen cabinet, so the dishes aren't tint; got an haircut to bad they rise their price by a dollar. (I bring exact amount, but I do carry extra just in case).

I cancelled my modern SBSO layout design so I wouldn't be buying modern weathered graffiti freight cars. It was a good idea but power plant add on was 70 some inches and the main was going to longer than 50 some inches.

I finally finished the 2x4-ish layout design. I know that I can start and finish. Too bad all the track alignments are all the same.

No surprise, but when I got up this morning there was 2 to 3 inches of white stuff covering everything. So I started to shovel the walks only to find ice underneath. Did the walks & put down some calcium chloride before the kids started to arrive at the bus stop. I didn't touch the driveway as it's easier to walk on snow than ice.

I had to drive down to a convenience store to pick up a couple of things, and the streets were okay. Can't say the same for the store parking lot. It had a good half inch of ice making it an ice rink. Guess their prople who they contract with hadn't shown up yet.

We didn't have plans to go anywhere today or tomorrow, so the conditions outside are of little concern. Maybe I'll be able to make a dent in that long list of chores that I have.

Stay safe...

Howdy .

I have heard this NC&StL 4-8-4 will be removed next month from the city park in Nashville, TN where it has been on display for  many years. It will be rebuilt into an operating steam lcomotive as has been reported in Trains magazine.

Because it operated in Tennessee, it was called a "Dixie" instead of a "Northern".

I took these photos a few years ago.

YGW - The free state safety inspections are a perk when you buy a new car at this dealer. I purchased my 1st Honda CRV there in 2007, & I've since bought 2 more.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, I'll have the BBQ Chicken Dinner and a glass Earl Estates Traditional Mead for supper tonight.

Had a great meeting with a bunch of guys from the class of '64 Canandaigua Academy this afternoon.  We got together at McGregor's down at the end of Main St. in Canandaigua near Canandaigua Lake....  Ah, YGW, I don't of any place caleed canadaigua, but I was born and raised near Canandaigua, NY about 15 miles from Geneva, NY where I live now.  Canandaigua means "The Chosen Spot" in Iroquoian, the language of the Seneca Nation who were the early inhabitants of the spot.  Look it up yourself.... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canandaigua_(city),_New_York The first treaty of the new American Nation was signed in Canandaigua, NY on November 11, 1794, the Treaty of Canandaigua was signed in the town by representatives of the United States of America and the Six Nations of the Iroquois.  It is still in force.....

Looks my class is going to hold an informal get together with a buffet supper and music/dancing at some point the week the city celebrates the year 1964...  We don't have a definate date for that yet, but the County Historical Society will be meeting with the City this week to get some things nailed down for it.  It seems that one of the class of '64 who was at the meeting, his father took an arial photo of the city back in 1964 which was found by the Historical Society and they want to have a year long display based on what was in that photo that has now disappeared from the city....  So they are including the CA class of 64 and photos (that I scanned) from our yearbook as part of all that.  Rather interesting, to say the least.

Speaking of history.....  I had an email from the Museum (R&GV RR) announcing something with a lot of WOW value for next summer...  And it is being announced by Kalmbach Publishing as well...  Oh heck read it for yourself.  I don't think Vinnie (or Steve) will mind me posting the URL: http://trn.trains.com/news/news-wire/2017/02/08-new-york-museum-marks-80-years-with-visiting-steam-diesel-donation

OK, I have a bunch of other STUFF I need to get done tonight, so I will catch you all later!

 Afternoon Diners

Flo, Ed will have a Royal Crown and I will have a beer please.

Day Off Did just a tad of running and then played with the trains.

Train Front Got the Mighty CB&Q F7A a unit mars light working again! Big Smile Had to do a reset of the decoder and all went well. Thank goodness I don't want Ed to think I am a total idoit! Whistling

Blue Line RSD-15 Working on get it running again. For folks that don't know what a Blue Line is, it was a bad idea by BLI. It has a sound decoder that will work on DC power. But if you want to use DCC you have to add a DCC decoder to control the motor. Now getting the DC sound decoder working with the DCC motor decoder, well lets just say. Bang Head

Mighty B&O F7's Seems the B&O F7B unit saw I had the programing track going, and it wanted some time on it? Hmm Yep, it stop running. Sigh Easy fix and hauling freight but again with no sound which is fine.

My wife drives a 2004 Grand Marquis. It has a terrible ride; bounces all over the place. We hope to replace it with a pickup soon, then we'll trade rides.

Tin Can While I have never pushed my wifes 2004 Grand Marquis it seems to stick well to the pavement. Heck, I have never floored it, even during the test drive.

C&N Charlie Town Car with 3:55 rear gears? That seems very odd, but with the OD it would do well on the interstate. Bet it could get out of its own way very well! Bet the spiders where not happy seeing you down stairs! Laugh

Ed Good looking house! Was it all ready painted or did you paint it?

 Later, Ken

I hope you are all fairing well and having a good day.

Ed - Your floor is a bit different when I saw that I immediatly thought of the biblical story "Joseph and his coat of many colors" How did you come by that design ? Did you cut each piece and glue it together or is that peel and stick carpet ? AMazing job on the farmhouse - well done -

Thank you, YGW!  The carpet tiles are random leftovers of commercial tile that I came across doing an internet search. I saw them in one of the other MR contributor's threads (Onewolf?) here and never made the connection. Recently, I found the same product at Home Depot at a better price than Amazon offered it.

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Versatile-Assorted-Pattern-Commercial-24-in-x-24-in-Carpet-Tile-10-Tiles-Case-NCVT002/204594243

There is peel-n-stick tape on the back but I add a few quick sprays of contact cement in addition.

It actually reminds me of flying over Kansas at 30,000 feet, the cross-weave of farmland!

SSExpress - What is 5 axis cc ?

CNCharlie and SS Express mentioned Haas and CNC milling. Here is a tour of the Haas factory that is amazing to see.

If you have time, watch this one, too...

Well, that's it for now. I'll check in later, Ed

Hello all

Great day here in Va. It is in the 60 to 70 degree range blue skies...Cool

Train front - I have signed up to be a "reviewer for the NMRA" for product conformance. There will be a bit of a learning curve there. If there is anyone here who has a recommendation on a beginners camera that has the ability to take close ups and not have a blurry background I would like to here your recommendations? Also we are supposed to start backfilling the Hobby/Train room tomorrow Big Smile And I purchased a "HO Scale" and it arrived in the mail yesterday.

Daughter is doing better. She hurt here arm in "speech class" when she "slung it down " to emphasis her comments. Apparently she did this with such force the upper arm stopped and the forearm continued going....She was in tears when they called me to come pick her up. She did get a lot of comments about hurting herself in speech class...Whistling fortunately for her she was not the first. Someone else dislocated their knee. She took some solice in that. Maybe she take up something safer like basketball ???

Howmus - Is there really a place called Canadaigua ?

Rickyw - An extra $750 only nets $25 in extra income ? What do you have to do to net $150 in extra income ?

CN Charlie - Well that is some great news ! That will be nice for you to get back to teh trains. Is your wife ready for you to get back to them also ? I was home four weeks once recovering from an accident. MOH couldnt wait for me to get back to work ! I was driving her crazy Surprise Survivors class could be taken one of several ways. I assume that you mean surviving cancer vs. surviving a hard class ? Why no eggs ?

Ken - LOL Turnip people ??? That makes for some crazy mental pictures...

Tom - How did you get ten years of free inspections ?

SSExpress - What is 5 axis cc ? My brother and Uncle were both machinist. My uncle retired and my brother is in management now. He talked some about CC machines. Sounded like really neat stuff.

Gary - Yes that was a strange class to get injured in. She got teased a lot about that.

Mr B - WOW - I have never had an inspector do that for me !

Ed - Your floor is a bit different when I saw that I immediatly thought of the biblical story "Joseph and his coat of many colors" How did you come by that design ? Did you cut each piece and glue it together or is that peel and stick carpet ? AMazing job on the farmhouse - well done - Yes

Ulrich - I sent you an email the other day. Did you get a chance to look through it ? Here in the states one can usually get scheduled for a surgery with in a week or so once they have determined that it is necassary. How is Petra holding up ?

Tom - I read somewhere years ago that teh meals program was started either during or after WWII. The reason is because so many young men were coing in under weight, malnourished, sickly etc ... to help out the kids. I agree it is absolutely shocking. Our church supports "Manna feeding centers" and we regularly coonduct food drives for the local county run feeding centers. Every year we raise between 400k to 600k for help in local and foriegn communities. I believe it is essential to help others. Part of what the church is called to do.

Histroy qoute of the day:

Liberty? Independence? Are they to remain only words? Gentlemen, let us make them fighting words!

Ray, and all other Diners trying to keep their hands warm this morning, I laugh at the temps you are talking about.

On my way to work this morning it was -42 C with the wind chill, but they are also saying by Sunday it should be +2 C.

If I didn't have to come to work today I would have gladly sayed at home.

All for now,  I will check in later as always.

Mornin folks....

Well, as I start to type this, it is still in the AM here in the Finger Lakes Region. Zoe, all I need right now is a refill for my Organic Dark Roast coffee so I have a warm mug to keep my hands from freezing....

Actually not bad outside today.  Currently 39°F out there under "partly" skies.  Sun has even appeared for a few minutes while I have been sitting here at the keyboard activating my new cell phone thingy...  Yep, my ancient (14 year old) cell phone died.  Decided that all it wants do now is take fuzzy clouded pictures and won't let me dial out on it.  Guess it didn't owe me anything.  Thought about actually getting a Smarty Pants iPhony Thingy that I could get free with renewing my account for 1¢ more than I had been paying ($30 rather than $29.99 a month) but found when I went to get it they insisted that I had to pay $40 more per month on top of the $30 to just own one of them thingies.  So I got me a brand new "Dumb Phone" that does the same tyhings my old one did only appears to work....  It is an ALCATEL ONETOUCH....  For the most part it will reside in the right pocket of my pants and stay off at all times anyway.

Tomorrow I should recieve a new Garman GPS to use in the Volt.  That way I don't have to talk to some lady somewhere out in the galaxy saying things like "Hello, cflahkcv bgcaka  cbsag csgco?".  It will also be cheaper than the OutOnAStar crap that comes installed in the car that I would have to pay over $40 once my "free" subscription runs out and besides is more reliable (from what I hear) and actually doesn't involve me talking with some lady I don't know while I'm driving....  Yep, I'm an Old Phart!

On the other hand I do like the fact that I have now driven about 1450 miles in the volt and have used all of about 7.9 Gallons of fossilized dinosaur dung....  Getting about 185 mpg (yes I know that doesn't account for the electrons that come from my roof...) so far.  will be taking some longer trips soon so that will be reduced I'm sure.  LOL  As far as comfort, handling, power, and ride?  I Love It!!!

My High School Class is starting to plan a mini reunion due to the Coiunty Hysterical Society doing a major display about Canandaigua in 1964.  Turns out the "Historian" (Volunteer) putting together the display was a classmate of mine at Easman School of Music!  We have been emailing back and forth for a couple days.  I look forward to seeing him again soon.  Want to find out how he and his wife ended up in Canandaigua.  He was a Tuba Major IIRC.  I was Voice.

Gotta grab lunch and get over to a dentist appt. (cleaning) and then head to a reunion committee meeting in Canandaigua.

Catch you all later!

Good morning all.

Zoe - A nice cinnamon roll with a glass of milk please. Thanks. Of course with the cream cheese glaze, yes, thanks.

Weather - We almost broke the record high yesterday, but fell just shy of it. Today we are cooler, with our (already hit) high of 47, and cooling down to snow showers this afternoon, with lake effect starting back up tomorrow.

W**k - Decent sales day yesterday, about 750 over our goal, and I hit about $25 in spiff and commission. Missed out on a really good commission when the last customer of the day decided they needed to "think about it" more... Not holding my breath till they come back...

I best be off to w**k now, so all have a good day, and I (might) catch up more later.

Good morning, everybody.

CN Charlie .... Good to hear you will be back with the model railroad. ... Good thing about our hobby is everything stays where you left it if you are going to be absent for a while.

I'm headed out the door to take my wife's car to the transmission shop. Transmission is slipping when I accelerate too fast.

Good Evening,

Took MIL out for lunch today as it was her 83rd birthday. Had a nice lunch and good time.

Ken, my FIL had a '99 Town Car with the Touring package that included a heavier suspension and sway bars plus 3:55 gearing. While it wasn't exactly stiff riding it certainly was a lot firmer than the '94 he had before but you would hardly call it a sports sedan. It seemed a strange package for a Town Car. Town Cars and Grand Marquis all came out of the same Ford plant in St. Thomas, Ontario, just outside London. It closed when they shut down production of those cars.

I went downstairs for the first time in 7 weeks today. I called the Doc's office first to see if that was ok and they said I should be largely healed up by now so it was ok to do. No problems but I shall be cautious for a while. Tomorrow I plan on running a train!!

No plans tomorrow except for my 'survivor' class. It is largely excercise but it also covers other issues too. A dietitian is giving a talk on friday which should be interesting. From what I've read so far, I won't be consuming much beef in the future especially hamburger on the grill. That and eggs too. Sniff.

Well just about time to hit the hay, so Good Night.

 Evening Diners

Flo, Ed will have a Royal Crown and I will have a Beer please.

Work was peacfull for most of the day. I was feeling pretty good about last night score! Have two day off coming with no Have To Do's and no Dr Appoiments! Yes Around 5:10 I was Attacked By The Turnip People! I swear all 4 people total IQ was around 100! I answered the same question like 7 times! After 40 minutes I was praying they leave! But Nooooo, they hung around for 1 hour and 40 minutes and did not buy a thing. I was so happy when they finally left! Yes I am sure my eyes where as glazed over as theres when they came in! Indifferent

Cool! I love the big hopped up lead sleds

Dave This is not a Lead Sled, just a old but clean 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis. It should have a luxury sedan ride like my Town Car. I do not drive the car often, it was bought for the wife. Guess I am getting old, but I do not like the way the car rides. I nor my wife will ever push the car to what it may be able to do.

Now with that being said, if it was a car bought for HP use like a Mustang GT it would give me a grin. If my 68 Road Runner could handle like this car might? Big Smile

YGW I have no idea why this car was order like it was. Thing I find funny is it has air bags and not springs? Well, I think it has air bags. I know it has air ride like the Town Cars, I can hear the air pump.

Did you find out how she hurt her arm in Speach Class? Laugh Guess I am lucky, I took speech for 3 years and never got hurt! Whistling

Ed Good to see you back in the Dinner! Do you think the carpet will help you find missing Kadees? Smile, Wink & Grin I still find them once in a while laying on the road bed and garage floor.

I haven't had to pay for the annual state safety inspection for the past 10 years, but I looked it up on the bill I got today & it would have been $22.87. The annual emission inspection cost me $34.00 out of pocket. Here's something I don't understand. 2 stickers are placed on my windshield upon completion of the inspections. They are identical in size & design, but the safety inspection sticker costs $6.00 & the emissions sticker costs $2.40. Go figure. I will not complain about the difference because I know they wouldn't reduce the $6.00 figure, but would raise the $2.40 sticker up to $6.00.

YGW......I am in production. I set up and run 5 axis cnc milling machines with some minor programming edits if needed. These are different machines and controls than what I am used to running. Not like the HAAS machines I am used to. Takes a little time but so far I have had plenty of support. Good evening ...

Ulrich .... Prayers and best wishes for Petra and he approaching surgery. .... I still think she is a blsssing to you.

YGW .... Stange injury for  speech class.  Hoping your daughter is okay.

Ed .... I like the building you made, and I like the colorful floor.

Tom and others regarding car inspections, we don't have them here. We do pay an annual property tax on vehicles, but not inspections.

Speaking of vehicles, I'm getting the old Porsche ready for warmer weather coming up. As long as we have to pay property taxes on it, I might as well use it. Also, we are required to have liability insurance even if the car is not drivable and parked in a garage 365 days a year.

So, instead of working on the layout, I worked on the Porsche so far this week. For the layout, I did order stuff I need for my bridges.

Happy Model Railroading !

I think our inspections are up to $35 now.  We have to get them done every year.  We get a quicky tailpipe sensor test.  I'm sure they are supposed to check far more than they do, but my local place has me in and out in 10 minutes.

A long time ago, when inspections were safety-only, they looked at the statistics of states with safety inspections and those without, and found no significant difference in accident or injury rates.

In the days before it was all computerized, I went into the local gas station for my inspection.  A young man asked, "Does your horn work and stuff?"  I replied that it did, and he gave me a sticker.  Easiest inspection ever.

Greetings, Everyone...

It has been a while since I stopped by. Call it the mid-winter doldrums!

Thanks for the beverage, Ken! I'll take a booth and sip it quietly.

BigDaddy
What do you guys pay for vehicle inspection?

Ohio has a biennial emissions check in seven of the counties in the Cleveland area which, I seem to recall used to be $20. For the past ten years or so it has been free and is funded by money from a tobacco settlement. Most newer cars only require downloading the emissions info from the OBD-II plug.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_inspection_in_the_United_States

I hope everyone is doing well.

Model railroad Projects:

I have finished up the carpeting of the layout room! What a difference it makes to have a nice, comfortable surface under-foot. I even wrapped fabric around the legs of the benchwork!

The avove view is before the skirting was replaced and a little more trim work has been finished. For PRR fans, that bright red panel is the exact color match to Toluidine Red!

When I wasn't on my hands and knees trimming carpet I was in the "Lab" working on a sweet little two-story farm house from AMB/Laserkit:

I really enjoy these laser-cut kits. This house represents one that my late model railroading friend, Jack Burger, lived in which was right along side the B&O Lake branch near here.

Well, that's all for now, Folks!

I hope you all have a safe and comfortable week... Prayers for those in need Angel  Ed

What do you guys pay for vehicle inspection?  In Maryland we have emissons inspections every 2 years, $15.  When you sell a vehicle you have to have it inspected, I think that runs around $115 + everything they fix to get it to pass.  Message to self, put on new windshield wipers before inspection.

Ulrich I have been out of the business for a few years, but I am pretty certain Petra would have her gall bladder out in the next 2 weeks in the US.  Maybe that's why healthcare is so expensive here.

I think it was 70 degees today, sunny spring like day.  We have only had 1" of snow so far.  I'd like to see a decent snow fall before spring.

Steven - Oh yes, there are tons of garages, etc closer & more convenient than where I go. However, this is the 3rd vehicle I have purchased at this particular dealer. Plus they have an excellent service department. We are generally in & out within an hour, & that wouldn't happen at many of the other garages. Another factor is that my state inspections are free since I purchased the car there. I do pay for the emission inspection however.

Pennsylvania is a little quirky with the emissions inspection in that it's only required if you live in certain areas. Kind of dumb as one side of a street could be required to test, and those across the street could be exempt.

I do appreciate that you took the time to do a little research.

YGW - Your right, my niece & her husband are both teachers & tell similar stories. Hard to believe that so many kids go hungry today in our society. But then, being 76, nothing shocks me anymore.

Good Evening!

I didn´t sleep a lot last night, so I was more or less out of order all day long today. I tried to get a nap during the day, but my dear neighbors did not want me to catch a moment of rest by being as noisy as a human being can possibly be.

I won´t stay up for much longer than maybe an hour and a half, before hitting the hay.

Petra went to see the doc today. She has an appointment with the surgeon on the 27th of this month, and we expect the surgery to take place not earlier than the 6th or 7th of March. That leaves her with another month of not feeling well and not being able to eat normal food. I was kind of hoping to be back to normal a lot earlier - well, that proved to be a mistake.

Other than that, there is nothing to report from this end. Not that there is nothing happening, but this is not the forum to talk about it - only that much, things are going downhill at a frightening speed.

I hope to catch some rest this coming night!

CU tomorrow!

Hello all

Yesterday I recived a call from my daughters school. One of them injured here self in "speach class " Somehow she hyper extended her elbow and strained a muscle. How does one gets injured in speach class ?? Must have been very passionate speech !

Train front - Bid on a few used Athear F7 N&W and when they reached $40 dollars I walked away.

Dave - That is nuts driving a classic car in that weather. Must have been desperate.

Ken - Why would they put a police package in that car ?

Ulrich - What does thE track plan look like ? How is Petra holding up ? Is she nervous about the surgery ? Orginial set of teeth ?! Wow !

Ricky W - LOL "Sell a dime for a nickel" ! never heard that one before.

Steve - Love the owl post

Mr. B - Brady reminded me in the second half of a great Dallas Cowbay qaurterback. Roger Staubach ! Being a Redskins fan I used to dread the second half when he played. I just knew he would somehow make 30 points in the last part of the game and beat us everytime ! Bang Head

CN Charlie - Hope your classes are going well and that your health is improving.

Tom - The hopper in your photo reminded me of a stunning fact of where I used to live. The elementry dschool where my children used to attend was known as the "rich" school in the county. Yet the teachers told me fully one third of the children there were on a Gov. food program. My niece is also a teacher and where she lives the kids that are on a Gov. assisted school meal is a much higher %. She told me some of the kids love coming to school because they know they will get something to eat there. It is very heartbreaking.

DER - Mrs YGW IS finally doing better. She went back to work yesterday. She was down for ten days ! Why is having cougars around crazy ? I thought they were still some around a lot of North America?

Angel - You dont live in the present ? Is that just on the RR ? When I was younger I wished I could have lived in the period when teh west was being opened and taht I was a trapper or something liek that. Know up in years I am so thankful for gas heat, elect.roof over my head etc...Glad I didnt live in the 1800 now !

V8 - You have NACHO CHEESE ! Oh man you are lucky ! Sounds like a great way to fellowship !

Galaxy - Hope your life improves. It stinks to have to be in a misreable place in your life.

Howmus - Well for one I am glad you are busy and not something like a health problem.

SSExpress - Do you work assembling ? Design ? Contracting ?

It's 54 degrees out & raining right now. I'm taking the car back to the dealer today for a state inspection & an emmision inspection. An annual requirement here in Pennsylvania. It's about a 40 minute drive from home. The wife wants to stop on the way home & do some shopping, so I suppose we will have lunch somewhere too. Most of the day will chewed up with the above.

We have the same requirement here in Wisconsin. But private service places like oil change and tire places are authorized to do the inspections and emissions tests. Even before that law was passed, they had testing facilities at each DMV branch -- at least one per county. Is there really no inspection facility closer to where you live? Not even a closer car dealer? Even if they sell a different make of car, that shouldn't keep them from being able to do the tests for you.

Edit: I did a quick search, and if you're near Pittsburgh like your profile says, you should have no problems finding a closer place to handle your inspection. Check here: http://www.drivecleanpa.state.pa.us/stations/stations_sw.htm

We cross the tracks of a short line on the way, but the only thing I have ever seen there was the last couple of cars going thru the crossing. Most of their traffic is at night I think. But I take my camera just in case.

Stay safe & have a good one...

Hey Ken!

cudaken
I have been wondering why my wife cars rides rough? Used a Mercury on line vin decoder and the car has the Police Handeling package. That explains a lot.

Cool! I love the big hopped up lead sleds. Figures you would own one! I always wanted a Chevy Impala SS with the Vette engine. I saw one a few weeks ago being driven in the winter in the snow and salt.DunceBang HeadSigh What a waste!
