A non-modeling friend has acquired a bunch of Trix and Marklin at an auction. He has asked me to help him find a resource or web site for pricing the items for resale. Aside from checking Walthers for the NIB items, and Ebay for the used items, any suggestions?
As a local hobby shop if they take consignment, and see how much they would offer.
Quite difficult to give an idea not knowing what we actually talk about.
In general, Trix and Marklin are German manufacturers. Marklin bought Trix a number of years ago and has established Trix as their 2-rail DC brand, whereas Marklin is 3-rail AC. Older Trix stuff is either 2-rail DC or even 3-rail DC, but by no means compatible with Marklin 3-rail AC.
European prototype engines and cars have a rather limited market in North America. The Trix USRA Light Mikado and UP Big Boy are sought after items and should fetch a reasonable amount. Both models are also available from Marklin, but will be difficult to sell.
None of the stuff can be regarded as collector´s items, except Marklin´s famous Swiss "Crocodile" electric engine, but only if it is article no. 3015, in mit condition and original box.
Of course, both Marklin and Trix sell better in their country of origin, but shipping cost to Germany is prohibiting.

I sold a bunch of older Marklin trains on Ebay in 2005. Ulrich is right on in terms of his description. I would just add that Ebay is by far your best bet in terms of selling these items and in terms of finding market value. Search completed items for prices.
BTW: Although I am in the US, I sold many items to modelers in Europe through Ebay. Be aware that your market is there and be prepared to deal with customs forms and some pretty ridiculous shipping charges in certain instances if you are selling out of the country.
Good Luck,
Guy
