Difference Between Bachmann Canadian National 2 6 0 Numbers 6012,6013 and 409
Posted by Dominion Atlantic Railway on Saturday, January 14, 2017 7:51 AM

As I had posted in a thread before I am looking into getting a Canadian National steam locomotive in my price range. The Bachmann 2 6 0 seems to have  good reviews and  the things I want .Most important a kadee compatable front and rear coupler.

There seem to be three different numbers for the the Bachmann 2 6 0.Numbers 6012,6013 and 409.What if any, are the differences in these locomotives?

I only have a small layout and use DC.Will a DCC loco run, if not use all the features, with DC?

As far as I know, they are identical except for the different numbers. I have one and although my layout is DCC I'm pretty sure I remember the documentation stating that this locomotive is safe on DC. The product manual on bachmanns website will confirm that

If the locomotive is DCC-equipped, it should also run on DC.  However, I always remove DCC or DCC-ready equipment from my locomotives as they run even better on DC without that stuff.

As for the numbers, it appears that 409 was a number used on a Mogul originally owned by the J.D. McArthur Company, one of the contractors which built some of the predecessor lines which later became part of the CNR.  It was built in 1909, and is of a somewhat older style than the Bachmann loco.
As for 6012 and 6013, those were Mountain-type locomotives (4-8-2 wheel arrangement) and aren't prototypical for a Mogul at all.

The 409 lasted until October of 1950, and there's photo of her in Clegg and Corley's book "Canadian National Steam Power".  It's a low-drivered loco, with slide valves and a headlight mounted atop the smokebox.  It's pictured in 1938, and looks pretty spiffy.

I have some Bachmann steamers. They came with a DC adapter to run on DC.

They do run on DC with the decoder but you have to turn the power pack up quite a lot more. It is noticeable. The microprocessor on the decoder requires at least five volts to just wake up. Maybe a couple more volts for the loco to move.

409 is DCC/Sound.  6011/6013 are DC models but should be able to be converted to DCC if desired (also are less expensive).  Can be found here:

http://www.modeltrainstuff.com/HO-Scale-2-6-0-Mogul-s/1713.htm

They pull decently.  Will start a 12+car train equipped with Kadee couplers if you run the slack in before starting (back up untill all cars start to move then pull forward, this trick causes the engine to only have to overcome the resistance of the stopped cars one at a time), once they are in motion it requires less force to keep them rolling (works on level track).

Edit:

As a side note I really wish Bachmann would come out with their Alco 2-6-0 with slide valves instead of piston.  Almost every single railroad that Bachmann has letter their mogul for had slide valves instead of piston....that having been said I have two.

Also read my response to your previous post. Quite a bit of info in there as well.
