A number of years ago I bought a gallon jug of Elmer's white glue at Lowe's because I knew I would eventually use that much in the the construction of my layout. Eventually has arrived and I need to get some more but have discovered that neither Lowe's nor Home Depot still carry the gallon jugs. The only gallon jugs are Titebond carpenter's glue which I don't want to use because it doesn't dry clear. Does anybody know of a retailer that still carries Elmer's or similar white glue in gallon jugs. I've visited Amazon and they list a number of e-tailers but I get nervous about dealing with companies I've never heard of before and none of them promise prompt delivery.
Have you tried your local hardware store? I have been amazed at what they can get as a non associated hardware store.
Several years ago I was in Wal-Mart and found the smaller dispenser bottles on sale. It worked out to less per ounce than their gallons and I got the bottles to put various mixes in.
Good luck,
Richard

I have not had any issues dealing with Amazon's "partners" other than shipping isn't as fast. But you can buy from Jeff Bezos directly and get free shipping if you are Prime member.

It's available here in Canada at Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, and at most lumberyards and hardware stores, too. Unfortunately, it's also in those puny American gallons, but your dollar will go pretty far here if it's not too much of a drive to the border.

Yes, I saw a gallon bottle on the shelf at our Staples a few weeks ago.
If it is out of stock, they have a workstation where you can make an order in the store and shipping is free if it is a stock item. One of their assocates can help you if needed. Sale counts to Staples Rewards if you have that.

Our local Lowes has one gallon jugs in stock. If yours don't, you can order it online and have it shipped free to your local Lowes store.
Slightly off topic, but personally I dont use much Elmer's glue...
So when Staples has their $0.01 white glue back to school sale every year, I buy to my heart's desire.
My 2 cents(literally!)

You did better than I did at Wally's. Next time glue is getting low I'll watch Staples in the fall. I find it handy to be able to have several mixes, they don't all have to be glue either.
Thanks for the tip.
Have fun,

I have bought gallons of Elmers white glue at Menards.
Have to watch the office supply stores, they often sell "school glue" which is not the same formulation (weaker) than "white glue".
YMMV

I searched the local (to you) Lowe's in Mt. Vernon and they have it listed as "unavailable for pickup". Sorry..
I DID locate it at the Lowe's in Ontario, OH.

Streamlined steam, oh, what a dream!!
Got mine at Menard's.
I use the empty jug, as well. I pour in about 1 1/2" of straight white glue, then top off the jug with "wet water". I drop in a few of the large fishing weights and shake. The weights are like the mixing ball in a rattle can of spray paint. Now I have a gallon of diluted white glue that I use for scenery, ballasting, etc. After a while of sitting on the shelf, the white glue tends to settle on the bottom of the jug. A few vigorous shakes will loosen the weights and will aid in stirring the diluted mixture. A quick trip to Wal-Mart and I buy some of those translucent condiment bottles (the ones with the longer tip and snap lids to seal the bottle). They come in real handy for applying diluted white glue. And, it's a lot quicker than constantly refilling a dropper.
Try Michael's craft stores. Go to the website and sign up for email notices. They frequently have 50%-off coupons. Michael's also accepts AC Moore and JoAnn Fabrics coupons and they often have 50%-off coupons.

I'm still trying to figure out what anyone could possibly have use for a "gallon'' of white glue, thats more than the average person would use in 25 years, what could you need that much glue for, are you making your own 4x8 sheets of plywood???
I have 2 very small containers of glue which I have had for 5 years and will probably last for another 10, maybe this "gallon" thing is a joke.

it depends on your construction method. I use hardboard spline subroadbed which means i could use a bathtub full of the stuff.

I have made many bottle brush trees. Also using a lot of white glue.

I'm already well into my second gallon of it and expect to probably need one more. I use pretty-well all of it on the layout, mostly for putting down ground cover and ballast.

Hello all,
Like this?
For ballast adhesive look at this thread http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/t/258968.aspx.
I have begun using this product to put down my ballast and am very satisfied.
I use the Woodland Senics foam track bed and using the Plastic Resin Glue powder mixed with ballast has provided great results.
Hope this helps.
