Mornin' everyo......

Oooo.....  Sticky Buns!  (Thanks Lion!) Ah. Zoe, I'll need a couple of those and a pot of Marrakesh Express Organic Dark Roasted Coffee to start the day....

There appears to be a bunch of little white specks outside my window going from South to North at the moment....  I think they call that "Partly cloudy".  May get a few inches of "Partly Cloudy" before the day is done.  Think I'll just stay here and get stuff acomplished that should have gotten done weeks ago.  I do have a meeting to go to tonight, but it is right here in Geneva....

Catch you all later!

Whistling

I thought that for Feb. we were going to Churchill Manitoba while the muskeg is still frozen and the ride there will be smoother.

I'm sure our good friend Steven Otte knows this as I caught a picture of him getting ready for the trip.  Cold Clip Art

Don't forget your ear muffs Steven.....

Johnboy, Churchill seems like a good choice. Why not just celebrate winter. Besides the high today there is just -20F so not too bad. We can enjoy watching the polar bears from inside the Diner!  Tourists spend a lot of money to go there and do what we can do from the comfort of our cozy Diner.  Best not to wonder outside. Never mind just the cold, a polar bear can run at an amazing speed, far faster than any of us and they tend to be a little grumpy.

I was going to suggest we go to South Africa as it is summer there and if we park at the Rovos Rail station in Pretoria, we can hitch a ride to Victoria Falls, or Cape Town. That would require changing the trucks on the Diner to 3'6" guage so perhaps Churchill is a more practical choice, not to mention the ocean voyage for the Diner. Yes, the more I think about it Churchill is a good choice. Great idea Johnboy!

Garry, why certainly.  There is a rail line to Churchill and Via operates trains there but not sure if they do in February. Never mind, we could organize a special run as this is a virtual Diner after all. Just for Stephen, nothing is too much trouble.

Good Evening!

I have not been feeling well during the day, so I´ll be heading for the hay soon. Sorry, no video today.

I may not be around to facilitate the move of the diner to the February 2017 location. Would someone please step in for me?

Hello folks, a few minutes to get to the keyboard, so here are the end-of-day rushes which did not want to post from Photobucket yesterday. Not rushed any more, they have now sauntered in.
This is the trimmed foam shell containing the foil liner
and this one of the portals
for that one I had to move the portal back about ½ inch – that shrinkage had consequences!
Finally, the portal of the tunnel which has the return loop tunnel diverging close by it.
I’ve started the card shell for the return loop tunnel (I’m going to have to invent some actual tunnel names – but the muse seems to be on vacation) So far test runs have been optimal, but it’s this tunnel which drove me to consider full liners since, being straighter and much shorter than the others, it can be seen through from both ends in normal layout operation.
That didn’t take long as I’ve reused card sections. (No foam on them since the foil shields them.) Here’s the result
Note a couple of things: The small purple foam blocks offset on each side about ½ way down the tunnel will provide voids in the foil to represent refuges for track workers. Also, the unprinted card section shows a characteristic of cereal box card. It is “polarized” as to direction of bend. So, if you are thinking of doing something like this for tunnel liners, be aware and test your card for ease of bend – see those crinkles?  I needed a longer straight bit although it “went against the grain”.
Ulrich:
John - thanks for sharing the pictures! There is something really nice in the making! I remember the pictures of all those tiny detailed things you made a few years ago! I wish I would still be able to do something like it!
I saved the small stuff from the turntable and still have both them and it. If I sell the table, I think I’ll keep the little detail things. I’m pretty sure I’d have difficulty doing them again! The snowblower sold when I thought I’d be leaving N. (As, interestingly I thought, did the whole of that 7 Atlas kits viaduct scene. It was on a module, and the chap who bought it said he knew just the spot for it. So, I’m happy with that!) Your layouts never cease to amaze, the speed with which you accomplish what would take  me ages!Bow
John, May I come back to that at a later stage?
Mais naturellement! This is what’s available  plus the bridge I mentioned. It struck me that the turnout would provide a siding on which to either deliver or park. Timing is up to you as there is nothing for which to save. PM me a mailing address. We’re all pulling for you and Petra AngelAngel Hope you feel better by the time you get to read this.
Ken :
Der On the tunnel liner, will it lift off in case of a de-railment? All my hills / tunnels are lift off just in case. My main mountain you posted the photo can all so be lifted off. Never have had to with the back being open with hidden staging.
In a word, No. The one I showed I can get at from either end with my handy-dandy flexible grabber thingy The black is insulation in case I have to recover in a live rail situation. (Unlikely, but then the softer insulation tends to scratch things less anyway. The grabby business end does this
The short tunnel is easy to get at. From either end, not anticipating trouble there. The long tunnel which will go under the far end of the layout’s major mountain is more of a potential problem. I figure I can provide access hatches from the side – the tracks are close to the edge all the way round that curve. I’ll cut (and now I’m “stream of consciousness-ing” since you’ve made me think more exactly about this) hatches in the foam and probably attach their outer faces to hatch covers on the fascia so that the whole hatch unit moves as one piece. Two should suffice given the flexibility of the HDFGT. I used hatches on the last layout, but they were all in the scenery, and I didn’t, in retrospect, like the joints. So, this time they will be in the fascia / out of sight in the tunnel. Thanks for asking, I needed that!
Der Thanks for the kind words. Now that I know better and looking at it for years I see many mistakes I made. I painted it from tips I watched on U-Tube and made up a lot of the mistakes I made.
…I know what you mean, but from where we stand watching your handiwork, it’s quite another matter!Bow
 Angelob6660:
Der- I liked the process. I didn't think about using cereal boxes and foam to cover the tunnel. I only thought of one. The foam.
I was after something to support the foil – rather like the wood forms used to construct stone arches in the real world. BTW, I realized last night (now three major improvements for this project have come at night) that I should paint the foil before crinkling it up. It’s a pain to work the brush into the folds once it’s all wrinkly! The foil shields the card from the foam so I can reuse the pieces, as the sharp eyed among us may notice. Smile, Wink & Grin
I’d better go and get the sauce ready for this evening’s chicken curry. Hopefully I’ll have the new liner ready for the new Diner location. South Africa sounds great as their steam power is(?)/was awesome.

Der5997, if the photos you've been taking to document your process are in sharp focus and of a sufficiently high resolution to print (2500 pixels wide at least), you might consider submitting an article to MR. Your technique is interesting.

Hello all

Busy day. Will read post tomorrow and respond. Prayers for those in need. Well wishes for all.

Prayer request. MOH has been sick for about a week now. I have been Mr. Mom, nurse maid, chief cook...plus regular duties etc... It is nothing more than a severe sinus infection/Flue but she just cannot shake it.

TTYL and thanks in advance for all or the Angel

Well....  I'm still waiting to see one I already sent in... Whistling. (Yeah, I know how the process works and that it just will get in when there is a need and space, etc.) I may well take you up on that just as soon as I get caught up on all the other must get dones around here.  Thanks Steven!

Ulrich you don't have our permission to leave the diner permanently.

Lion Great looking sticky buns.  The local bakery doesn't quite get it.  Their raisin buns have 3/4 cup of raisins and the sticky buns have been cast in molasses.

While it's not officially a lion, DC is in turmoil because of a renegade bobcat  https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/local/wp/2017/01/31/fearing-a-missing-bobcat-d-c-kept-schoolkids-inside-but-ollies-most-likely-shy-experts-say/

Hope you guys get published in MR.

 Evening Diners

Flo, Ed and I will have a Beer

Work Front this month was a bust. Month started out so well, by the 16th I had $17,000.00 plus in sales. If I had another $5000.00 for the rest of the month I would be shocked!

I may have hurt my knee at work? Have no idea how I may have done it, maybe twisted it? It feels fine when walking in a straight line. But trying to rasie it, like getting in the car? Crying It started hurting around 4:00 PM and is getting worse. By the time I got home I started feeling like I was getting a fever. Sigh I normally off Wednesday, but with have a VA appoiment Friday I had to change days off. If the knee is still hurting I see what can be done while I am at the VA.

 Later, Ken
