YGW,

Regarding your question about my grades, History 17 was taken for Pass/No Pass. I got a Pass which means those units are awarded to my transcript.

My Networking Class (Computer Maintenance Technology 230) was taken for a standard letter grade (ABCDF) I got an A which means those units are added to my records as well.

Either way, I still passed both classes.

. . .Of course I am a Bass myself, meaning Debauched or a kind of Fish. . .

I, myself, am a tenor, which means I sing ten-or-twelve notes off. Big Smile

Afternoon Folks!

Chloe, just a refill for my decaf would be great!

Just thought I would add to the Altus discussion.  The lower Female voice part "Alto" also comes from the Latin Altus meaning high!  On what we are not sure.......  Of course I am a Bass myself, meaning Debauched or a kind of Fish.   Hmmmmm.  Depends on how you pronounce it I think.  Better than being a "Bargain Counter Tenor" anyway!

Had lunch with my Son today.  His old FORD had to be inspected which also means he had to get a couple of crunching bearings, squeeling brake pads and such repaired so it will pass.  He is not one to get those kind of little annoyances fixed until he has to or something falls off the car.....  Will be heading back over to his house for supper tonight.  He is smoking a pork loin today and will be making pulled pork BBQ for supper tonight.  Yum!

I have been answering a bunch of emails on STUFF needing to get done before the all the MLK Festivities next weekend....  We'll git 'er done!

Sun is shining today here in the Finger Lakes so the 1/4" of white stuff that we got last night is melted off the panels.  It is about 20°F outside at the moment.

Have a good one!

Garry - When you mentioned that your Dad would be 99, it invoked a lot of great memories. My Dad would have been 107 this coming May. The scary part is that I still remember him as a young man. I also regret not talking to him about a lot of things I should have. I would really like to know more about his early years. Memories sure come as a mixed package, don't they?

Hey all

Been a crazy busy day at w**k. Men and equipment all over the place ! President and VP out getting in my hair too !

Train front : Nothing today accept planning and making some structural changes. Changing from a triple 2x12 header to 2 - LVLs over the garage doors. Scheduled carpenter start, slab prep. and pour.

Mr. B - Cant that guy contact MTH for a problem like that ?

Garry - I had to replace a HWH at my old house I think that thing cost me around $1200 ! It was propane also. What did the one you replace cost ?

Ulrich - Hope the knee is better. Duchy of Holstein ??? Really ? We have a LOT of milk cows in this area that are "holsteins" I wonder if there is a connection there ?

CN Charlie - How is the first full day of "freedom going "? What is the temp there with out wind chill ? Geez how does anyone function in those temps ?!

UP831 - The Hobby barn is s - l - o - w - l - y making progress. I hope to be framing by the 19th ??

Ed - Why would you program on the main ? Why not on a seperate track ?

Ken - Nice to see you enjoying the MRRing. I remember a while back when you were down in spirit and planned on tearing down the RR.

Henry - WOW - Didnt know

Howmus - I have been think about some energy generating methods for instance - what if one could put a generater on each axle of a vehicle ? Or since water has been used to generate water what if some one came up with a system to use the flow of the "brown water" in the house piping ? Or a series of wind devices on the ridge of a roof ? Thereare all kinds of ways one could generate power from their own vehicles or from their own house !

Rob - Italian & Apache ??? Hmmm ?? So is that a coffee mug shiskedabob by arrows ? Whistling

Richard/Ken - What exacty does MOPAR stand for ?

Lion - What is a "power chair" ? I have visions of some Tim the tool man contraption

Rich - Heck I remember when gas was cheaper than a $1 a gallon. I was so upset when it went to a dollar. I thought how in the world am I going to be able to afford that !

Good morning, Diners!  I'm still feeling a bit blah.  I've had a nasty cold for a few days and I'm not sleeping well, but it's slowly getting better.  I woke up this morning to a light snowfall.  No more than an inch, if that, but it's going to be cold for a while so it will stay around, and I'll have to shovel the walks.  Quite different from the last few years, when we've had feet of snow on the ground, and brutal cold which seemed to go on for months.  The ground was bare until this mini-storm.

I've got a question.  There's a thread over on the DCC and Electronics forum by someone who is having issues with his MTH locomotives.  It's gotten a couple of "sympathy" responses, but nothing useful since that's such a niche market to most of us.  Does anyone have a suggestion for another forum where he might be able to get some more help?  I hate to see a thread go by with no responses, but sometimes the best we can do is suggest someplace better to go for answers.

Good morning everybody. ... I'll hve  hot coffee and very warm oatmeal, please.

CN Charlie ... I don't think I could get used to living in your climate. You are talking about very frigid weather. ... Here it is now 16 F and that is way too cold for me.

Ed .... I'll have to be careful with programming on the main after reading your story. I always just use the DCC controller to do that.

Ken .... Several days ago, I read your comment about P2K E-units being "paper weights".... What was that about? ... I have several P2K E-units which I have used for many years, and they still run quite well.

News from the Heartland Division..... My CB&Q 4-8-2 now has a Tsunami sound decoder installed. It is hauling my train of Walthers Burlington heavyweight passenger cars.

Yesterday would have been my father's 99th birthday.

. . .ROR You are right about the term MOPAR. Are you a car person as well?. . .

No, far from it. I my first car was a '67 Dodge Dart (with a 318) and I used to dabble with car stuff but never got into. These days I pay people to change my oil.

Ulrich: I looked it up. Altona is very close to the Reeperbahn where the Beatles got their first breaks. But one question, how did that region change from Danish to German territory?

Quite simple - by war! The Duchy of Holstein, to which Altona belonged, was entrusted to the Danish throne, with the people not even speaking Danish. The duchy became part of the Kingdom of Prussia, following the short, but bloody Prussian-Danish war of 1864. Those were the days ...

Good Morning!

Closing in on lunchtime, so this will be just a short stop for me! Icy cold, but sunny weather again. I´d wish I could go for a walk, but I have sprained my knee and can hardly move around.

Good Evening

It is a frosty one out there right now with a windchill of -36C. Mind you that is better than this morning when it was -43.

Didn't do much today, then again I won't be doing much for the next month but at least I am headed slowly in the right direction.

Ken, I enjoy the pictures of your Road Runner. I never owned a performance car myself but had friends who did. A good friend from school is now restoring a '65 vette that he has owned for 40 years so it seems owning such cars for a long time isn't unusual. The longest I owned anything was a sailboat that I had for 25 years.

Keep warm,

Good Evening Diners,

Brunhilda, I'll have a glass of your best red wine, please.

Ricky, condolences on the loss of your uncle.

Ulrich:  I looked it up.  Altona is very close to the Reeperbahn where the Beatles got their first breaks.  But one question, how did that region change from Danish to German territory?

YGW:  How is the train barn going?  Hope there's none of the typical construction malfunctions.  Are you getting excited to start on that layout?

its cold here right now, but supposed to warm up some next week.  No immediate forecast of snow.

Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Good evening ...

With help from friends, I spent the day replacing a water heater. It took a long time to find a suitable replacemnt water heater which is a propane, 50 gallon heater with power vent. That type is scarce. ... The new heater had the pipes postitioned differntly coming out the top than the old heater. Also, the electric blower was a different size and shape which was positioned differently than the old one. So the hot and cold pipes needed relocating as the the exhaust vent. ....

Not much to report with the model railroad.

Sir Madog
Ed - I live close to Altona, which is a part of Hamburg. I wonder if Altoona is a name sake of Altona, which means "all to near". Altona used to be Danish until 1854 and for the people in Hamburg, this was too close to them - hence the name.

Ulrich, from Wikipedia...

One explanation of the city's name is that the word "Altoona" is a derivative of the Latin word altus, meaning "high".

This explanation is contradicted by Pennsylvania Place Names.  Although Altoona, in Blair Country, is popularly known as "the Mountain City", its name has no direct or indirect etymological relation to the Latin adjective altus, signifying "elevated, lofty." Two very different explanations of the origin of this name are current. The one which seems to be most natural and reasonable runs as follows: "The locomotive engineer who ran the first train into Altoona in 1851 was Robert Steele, who died several years ago, aged nearly ninety years. He was then the oldest continuous resident of the city. He was much respected, and had long been one of the private pensioners of Andrew Carnegie. Mr. Steele is authority for the statement that Colonel Beverly Mayer, of Columbia, Pennsylvania, who, as a civil engineer of what was then the Pennsylvania Central Railway, had laid out the tracks in the yards of the newly projected city, named the place Altoona after the city of Altona in Danish Holstein, which became part of Germany in 1864.  The German Altona, which is today a district of Hamburg, lies on the right bank of the Elbe, immediately west of Hamburg city center, and is an important railway and manufacturing centre with a population of nearly 200,000. The etymological derivation of the name Altona is not known with certainty, but widely believed to be Low German all to na, meaning "all too near" (sc. Hamburg).

Interesting. And in reality, Altoona is situated mostly in a valley, the "High Ground" being the summit of the Alleghenies at Gallitzen, just west of Altoona and Horseshoe Curve.

Hey, Ken!

Glad you're having FUN!

I have heard good things about ATF and as far as Lithium, I think I have some "Lubriplate" around here somewhere. That stuff used to be like Magic-Lube. How about Marvel Mystery Oil, remember that? Top oil, how many kids know about that stuff today?

I used to use JMRI to make changes "on-the-main" all the time, but one day—there may have been Beer involved— I somehow changed a bunch of engine addresses to 6200, the number on my PRR Turbine!

To this day I can not figure out what I did. Only SOME of the decoders got changed. Like an ABBA set of F7s with the same decoder in them, sitting on the same track, only 3 out of the 4 got changed!? With JMRI it was very simple to put the affected engines on the programming track and click, write full sheet!

SO, I have still been nervous about programming on the main... I'll get back to it again soon, it is nearly impossible to do speed matching without programming on main.

Thanks for the Cocktail, Ken! I'll be back later, I'm going to chop a chunk of drywall out of the corner of the layout room wall Indifferent

Take Care, Everybody... Ed

I love the rear profile shot! It just says "muscle car"!

Dave see the wet spot on the pavement? I dropped the hammer a tad and had gas getting pass the gas cap. I had a big old Big Smile on my faces.

Rich A 383 in a GTX? GTX's only came with 440's or 426 Hemi's. Bet you are glad you hung on to your SS. By the way, is it the 325, 350 or 375 Hp 396? I remember when I was around 23 or so and all my friends where selling of the Hp cars. I was told by many "Ken, you have a family now so it is time to sell your Road Runner". At my 20th High School reunion same guys where crying about the car's they sold. I just grinned and said "You want to take a ride in my Road Runner? It is in the parking lot!" Big Smile They all looked like they where going to be sick. Ick! Yes

Rick Sorry for your family lost. Angel Good luck with the Spiff as well.

ROR You are right about the term MOPAR. Are you a car person as well?

Ed I have ATF in the pin point oiler, a tip from Jeffery. With the PCM Y6b I lubed the motor and worm gear with ATF. Then I used Hob-E-Lube gear lube gear and then some White Lithium Grease into the worm tower.

I have a NYC PK 1000 F unit that I could not get the rear truck bearing to remain quite! Finally I used the White Lithium Grease and not a squeak after that! I will add I coated the cam and lifers with it when I started the 68 Road Runner after letting her sit for 10 years, good stuff! Yes

Train Front Seems the PCM Y6b has Lok 3.0, did a decoder reset and I now have CV's for the sound! While I am not total happy with the Y6b sound level I can now hear the CB&Q F's. Yes

Ed speaking of CBQ's Yes I love them! Bow Still messing with the Mighty B&O F7's but have not gotten them back on the rails yet. But I will, you can count on that!

One of the best things you have done for me so far Ed? I did not know I could chave CV's on the fly with decoder pro.

 See you all Friday, Ken

Howdy....

Figured I would pop my head in the door before someone sends the cavelry after me.....  Oh, Chloe, I do have tine for a quick cup of hot chocolate please...

Been busier than a cat trying to cover poop on a marble floor all week so far.  We are just over a week away from the MLK annual march, service, dinner, and Art and Poetry contest here in town.  I seem to be the go to guy for most everything and this year since my church is the host for the celebration, I am doing some double duty.  Anyone want to come and run sound for the service for me???  You need to know how to use a Soundcraft Pro board, BTW.  Neat piece of equipment but does have a learning curve if you don't know Live Sound well.

Ricky, will keep you and yours in my prayers for the loss of your Uncle!

I was supposed to be going over to the Handicapped Troop Meeting tonight, but they have cancelled out as there is not enough Adults available to have the meeting (probably few Scouts as well).  So I can spend some time catching up with stuff tonight.  Maybe even do some w*rk on the large bridge Abutmaent I am putting togther when I am down cellar for something else and have a couple minutes to do another row of stones...

YGW, couple days back you asked about wind and water electric generation....  Wind Turbines are not allowed inside the city here so that is out...  Wouldn't mind having a small wind generator though.  A lot of farms and homes in the country are getting them.  Southern Tier of NY, the wind farms help the farmers a lot as they can still till and use the fields the turbines are in and they get good rent from the companies that put them up.  For many it helps them just stay even.....  If I lived next to a creek that flowed all year, small water turbines are also neat!  If I lived in "Milo Mills" which I have loosely modeled on the layout, I would consider getting one.  However, all the power I use either comes from the roof of my house or is purchased from 100% renewable green sources (Clean Choice Energy).  Basically comes from local Solar, Wind, and non-invasive hydro power.  By next year Geneva, NY will be producing more (100% green) Power than is used here in the city.......

Hope everyone has a great day!

Afternoon Diners,

Ricky- Sorry about your Uncle.

Plans on my door layout is going well. I decided if I could add multiple store buildings to inspire the downtown feel.

My businesses are still a mystery right now. But I thought about my interchange track next to the switch tower. I thought of PRR (probably one GP9 or another type.) Or EL, CO, BO, RDG, NKP, or just leave it as the NYC.

I found some still-in cabooses I could use. The Athearn Bay window caboose with two small windows. Since their not decorated in NYC green I thought probably I could do it.

Lion - Is your paw well enough that you can get back to your trains ?

WEll, I have not tried it yet. I was to the doctor yesterday, I no longer have to wear the CAM boot at night, and I can put weight on my leg, so I suppose there is no reason whay I cannot go up there. I am still using the power chair for longer distances. It is 500' from my room to the cafeteria, likewise to the trainroom which is in a different building, and then two flights up.

I'll get up there shortly.

YGW - I don´t trust electronic banking, either. The few transfers I have to do I do at a terminal located inside the bank, which is not connected to the Internet and I am very selective who gets my account details. I don´t have a credit card - I am a rather old-fashioned, cash only person. This helps me to have a tight control on my spendings, as I can spend only what I have (which is not much, unfortunately).

Hello all

Cold here down into the 20s ( I know you guys up North think this is a heat wave ) and they are calling for snow this afternoon.

Train front: Nothing today other than getting my MRR and trying to find time to read an article or two.

Ulrich - Yes I think checks are going out of style. I still use checks. I do not trust electronic systems. Ive been hacked twice !

Ed - Did your decoder problem show up during the OP session ?

Ricky W - Sorry for your loss will say a Angel for your family

Dave - I understand that thought there are things that I have to do that I would rather be anywhere else than doing that thing.

Rich - Yep those are two expensive hobbies. But the end result is worth the effort !

Ken - Wetaher, inspections, material availability and waiting my turn for crews is playing havoc with my Honny barn schedule. Until I get a FDN in I cannot develop a schedule. Long range I am thinking beening done by July ?? Then I can start the bench work.

Richard - Geez how about bottling some of that here 65 degrees and shipping it here !

CN Charlie - Glad you are okay and welcome to freedom day !

Lion - Is your paw well enough that you can get back to your trains ?

Jimmy - Why the Wheeling & Lake Erie ? What about that RR caused you to switch to it ?

Also. IF we stay together, then we have improved the house the way we want

and If we DON"T and it is court ordered SOLD and SPLIT proceeds, hten we will have increased it's value by a lot.

Does that answer your Q?

{see I DO have ulterior motives}

Well, yesterday shelves came to put the indoor plants on one side of the bonus room on, a sturdy set that won't rack like the "meant for it" greenhouse shelves

Another set is coming on wheels so I cna move it around, that is larger, shoulda thought about the wheels for the other one too, i will see what kind of wheels they are and go to HF to see if I can get tehm for the smaller rack.

DOn't forget tehre are about 35 tropic and other plants in that room! My "indoor garden". LOL we both ordered some more tropicals but won't arrive until about April or MAY.

so the red Antherium, the money tree,Pikake jasmine two ruffled pruple colored leaf plants, an herb  terrarium, a bromeliad, and two "Cast iron" plants {you supposedly can't kill with neglect}, and about 3 other plants are on that new shelving unit. Gee i need to add a white antherium now.

I havested the Meyers lemons finally and trimmed it back, and cut back the ginger plant [yes as in ginger ale}, fertilized the two banana trees {one ornamental and one fruit bearing dwarf} and the dwarf Pommegranate tree. The bananas and the pommegranate take the same 10-10-10 fertiliszer. This time in two years I should be having nanas of my own and some poms to eat!

The palm tree is doing fine too.

I have Music green plantings, and long necked palms, some humpty twisted bonsai, and some ....oh never mind i was going to make a play on the kids song "green alligators and long necked geese....but i think it is busted.

ojk then...

Y'all have a smnashingly good day!

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.
