GE tri mount/Commonwealth tri mount trucks
Posted by CavalryTrooper143 on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 8:14 PM

Hello all;

I model the PRR, and PC.  Many of the bigger locomotives in the waining years of the might P Co., used this truck.  To the best of anyones knowledge, has this truck ever been produced for the refitting side of the hobby?  IE Samhongsa has made many styles of truck, that can be adapted to older brass, or plastic locomotives.  So has the tri mount ever been produced?

Thanks

Horse,

 Alco marketed a 12' 6", double equalized 'Tri-Mount' truck for their early RSD models.  The actual lower equalizer sometimes had a curved edge, sometimes a straight edge,  I suspect Alco had someone cast these for them,

  The 'Commonwealth' truck has a 13' 0" wheelbase that BLW & F-M used.  This truck had a large cast straight equalizer.

  GSC also produced a double equalized variant  that is very similar to the Alco truck.  BLW used this truck under a lot of early PRR orders.  This may be the truck you are describling.

  Early GE's like the U25C has a curved equalizer version, with upswept 'ears' on the sideframe.

  As you can see, there are a lot of variations in locomotive trucks!

Jim;

Thank you for your information.  What I am looking for is an HO version that I can use to replace the original lower quality trucks on the E33, and E44 class electrics used by PRR (in the case of the E44), and Penn Central/Conrail in the case of the E33.  The Alco models E33, and E44 have an open frame motor, and an open gear tower to the trucks.  I am in the process of replacing all of these with can motors, modern drive trains, and I would like to replace the older/noisier trucks, with a better option.

The Alpha models locomotives are better, but can still be tweeked.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Hi, Horse

Are you familiar with the Bowser Century series? They offered an "upgrade" kit that included sideframes for the older Stewart models. (top of this page)

If you need the whole truck, contact Lee English at Bowser. I'm sure you could buy the trucks as repair parts.

Good Luck, Ed

The trucks you are looking for are under the Bachman E-33. They do sell parts so you may be able to get them there. The Rivarossi and Korean Brass U-25c's also have the same truck. Not sure if they sell parts . The trucks under the Stewart/Bowser Alco C-628/630 units have the correct wheelbase and axle spacing but the equalizers on the side frames are smaller. ---  Ken
