MisterBeasley
Ed, thanks for taking care of that fine cat.

Thanks for the kind words, MisterBeasley, and to all of the rest of us here in the Diner that make an effort to protect our animal "dependants".

I heard of an awful event involving a poor cat in New Jersey this past weekend that still haunts me and dispels any hope I have of some people overcoming their basic cruelties.

THIS is the scene I encountered when I awoke this morning!

Yeah, I think Penelope has made herself quite at home here.

Thanks for the comments and support, fellas'!

Check in later, Ed

BigDaddy

You should see your doctor rather than seek a diagnosis here.

Well, that's 100% of the posters who have responded suggesting you need to see a physician. There's a well meant message in that. Please heed it.

All sorts of things can cause dizziness, some of them can be signs of serious problems, like heart arrythmias, neurological problems diabetes, dehydration and more.  You should see your doctor rather than seek a diagnosis here.

Crystals in the inner ear are far less serious and can be treated by a simple manuever but what you don't want to do is fall down and break something important like your hip or your skull.  The risk of dying in the over 65 age group is 15% with a hip fracture.  That's huge compare to say, elective heart bypass surgery.

Ed, thanks for taking care of that fine cat.  I'm allergic to them, so having one at home is not an option, but I love cats and they can be great friends.

When I was younger being dizzy usually was directly connected to the amount of chemical distillate consumed. The worst staggers I experience is after one to two weeks at sea on a fishing boat, amazing how the dock will shift underfoot. Diabeties will cause loss of balance/dizzynes. Balance receptors in the bottom of a persons foot become damaged, and will cause this. As I move about the house the dogs will give me a wide berth, more of a controlled fall---Where I travel in the woods around the house looks like Hannabel's Elephant Corps has passed through, I tend to strip branches off the trees. One of the concessions that I have made is occasional use of a cane, great for folding blackberry canes to one side--reduces the shredding--

V8Vega definately have your blood pressure checked, and also have your blood sugar checked as well.

I'm not old, I'm only 17, but boy--have I had fun--!!!

I have been fighting off being dizzy all day. I know retirement age people sometimes get this. What causes it and how do you get rid of it?

Have you had your blood pressure checked recently? Low blood pressure can cause dizziness, especially right after you stand up. Been there, done that.

Rocks in your head.

Seriously. There are tiny crystals in the ear canals. Sometimes they get out of place and sufferers have balance issues. Therapists can move them back into place by applying certain movements to the patient's body. The patient can also learn how to do this himself.

That's one thing. Another is excessive nasal drainage, which seems to affect those of us who can be described as elderly (gah, I hate that term) in ways that don't impact younger folk. You might have to go onto something like Flonase to help eliminate it.

There are also balance classes taught by trainers at most big gyms. I have never taken one, since being unbalanced suits me, and people just seem to expect it. Smile, Wink & Grin

There are other causes of course. Maybe time to see your doc and mention the issues.

Extra strong coffee in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please and thanks!
***Ken, neat photo, even if it is chilling to look at.
***Tom, nice looking Pennsylvania loco. Have any pics of those Union Pacifics to share?
***herrinchoker, nothing better than a wood stove in winter. Putting in new gaskets in my current wood stoves door presently. Also going to add a true cooking stove with oven as soon as I enclose the back screened porch.
***Ed, excellent looking tower. Well done! And Jingles/Penelope is beautiful.
***YGW, in spite of J.D.s purported reputation, my experience with them has been routingely dreadful. At least one of the following has occured every single time: 1) They replace a perfectly good part that did not need replacing. 2) They did not fix something I asked them to fix. 3) They fixed something only to have the repair fail shortly after returning it. I am done with them. Will take it to the independent mechanic I met and have things done right and completely.
***Der, I like your track story. I call those: A Happy accident! Nice to see you working on the layout. Hey, for 4 C notes, you could pick up a BLI Brass-hybrid  I-4-C 4-6-2 with V1A Vandy Tender.Whistling

BTW, my computer has been acting up lately, too. Perhaps Richard is on to something there.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

Good afternoon all.

Zoe - A Coke float please. Thanks.

Cudaken - Yep, still like it! Made about $25 in spiff money over Saturday, not much on Sunday, but I was only there for about 4 hours.

Angelob6660 - Hey now, ATSFGuy might be younger than we are, but you are not the only 30 year old here! Stick out tongue Although I do think that we are, possibly, the three youngest in the diner...

Weather - Cool today, and next two,  then snow starting Thursday, with possible heavy accumulations from it.

W**k - Off today and tomorrow, district manager is in on Wednesday (allegedly anyway) and the owner will be in on Friday. The other guy got a hour bump this week, bumping me down a few, but, he has a 3 year old to take care of, so, no complaints from me, yet... However, if he makes a flub-up like Sunday's was, there will be some words.... He authorized a return of an online only item, that cost the store almost 3K, so it will cost me (and him, plus the manager, and the owner) some spiff money, as that killed our chances of hitting our weekly, and monthly, goals....

Trains - Have not advanced on either project yet, but might get some done tomorrow or in the upcoming week. (I hope!)

Hope all are well, and all have a good day!

I made some unplanned purchases this week. . .

There must be something in the air. Within the last month I replaced Mrs. ROR's laptop and our printer. Laptop's wireless went out rendering it virtually useless and the printer head decided it was tired and didn't want to move anymore. Perhaps there are subversive timers that go off right before Christmas.

MisterBeasley

Is this anything other than the general turmoil that's been going on?  Our news of Europe is very fragmented and seems to be written by interns with less grasp of the situation than even I have.  "Jimmy Kimmel to host the Oscars" appears to be a more important story to our media, and will certainly garner more clicks.

Sadly true.

Afternoon Diners,

It's been 4 days since I posted but I little busy. But the main reason was I didn't feel like posting.

Train News: I been hard at work designing a track plan diagram for the small town of Jennings. No more than 6 feet long in length, but I haven't decided the width. I know it's more than 1 foot.

The main line between the switches can hold a locomotive and probably 4-5 cars but it cannot hold a caboose.

I'll show a picture later today or tomorrow.

ATSFGUY- You might be the younger diner in here at 23. I'm 30, I thought I was youngest (laughs). There might be more.

DER5997- Your track work is coming together.

Pullman- She looks like a good cat, did they tell you how old she is?

MisterB. - it´s all politics, so I won´t address it here. Only this much - most of what is going on does not hit the news, which does not mean it is not happening. Shades of 1933, only this time with a "red" coat.

I woke up to snow this morning.  I doubt that we even got an inch.  It kept snowing lightly all morning, but it's stopped now.

Nothing to report from this end. Incredible things are happening in my country, which I cannot talk about in here. Petra and I are getting ready to pull out!

Hello Folks: If there’s any left, I’ll join Ulrich in his apple strudel and custard! Sounds wonderful!

Garry:

Der .... I finally got Photobucket to upload one of my photos. ... If you can get into your library and see an album page with your images, you can upload there. One of the squares is to click for upload instead of a square for a photo. .... Look at the upper left corner of your Library page. ... It says "Click to upload" .... Also, the library now has security protection for each album. I unlocked mine so I could upload, but I don't know if I needed to do that. Don't you just love technology ?
Thanks, that particular “Upload” path had escaped me as I’d been fixated on the word “Upload” as a clickable button! However, it’s all moot as now  - and for some days past, I have not been able to get to my Library. Even typing in the address for my account in full gets rejected in favour of http://s3.photobucket.com/#recent-activity rather than the …….ket.com/home/myusername which is what is typed in. #recent-activity is one big ad for their services with Upload and Log-In or Sign Up as options across the top. Needless to say, neither Log-In nor Upload gets past the endless loop![banghead.

Henry:

Br Elais you mentioned selling bread, which reminded my of the Bread Monk, who used to have a PBS TV show.  I see he is a Benedictine but in IL.
Could that be https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWhcLypOjGc (Which doesn’t play on my computer, but I’m going to try through Roku some time!

Rob:

At some point, I evidently picked up a BLI 2-10-2 in ATSF. Have no recollection of doing so. That is kinda scary.Huh?
Out of curiosity I went to the BLI site and priced that puppy (Sound decodered for DC/DCC) and it came out at a cool 4 C notes. I do know this, if I had ever made a mrr purchase of that magnitude in one go, I would treasure it. I had written “not be allowed to forget it” but when I read that out was instantly reminded of two things, 1) It made my wife sound like a tyrant, which she certainly is not, and 2) I would probably not have told her!

Hey! What do you know? Photobucket actually let me log in today, and I uploaded via the “first square” as kindly suggested. So here is the Interchange Yard ballasted a few days ago. The story I’m telling there is that the original line had dark ballast, and the newer tracks have lighter. Actual story is that I used too much India ink in the “wet water” for the first run of ballast, and experimented thereafter for a less dark grey. The ballast is Woodland scenics Light Grey Fine taken down in a Magic Bullet to be more like N Scale. Fine would be Fine for HO, I suppose.

I’ve now finished getting all the turnout motor cavities “waterproofed” ready for ballasting. Here’s what a couple on my main industrial spur look like.

Lunch time, then it’s doing the Christmas Cards this afternoon. Housework may follow as we do that before putting up the decorations. See you later…

..........  wlks up steps to diner door.......  Door swings open!  Oh!  Hi Garry!  (He appears to be in a hurry today......)

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a couple of those sour cream donuts you have over there, and a large pot of Marrakesh Express Dark Roast Organic Coffee to wash them down with...

Dark grey and icky outside with thick heavy clouds at the moment...  Temperature is 41°F.  I have a couple items I need to get done this morning, and then this afternoon I have an appointment with the Eye Doctor for my yearly exam.  Hopefully everything will go well for that.  Then this evening I have an MLK Committee meeting at my church.  My church is the Host Church for our 2017 celebration.  I will be likely multitasking on stuff until that is done with since this is the first one that our newish pastor has been really involved with and our retired minister will be in Florida by then......... Whistling

I guess i better get busy and get some items finished!

Happy Monday Morning, Diners!

Just time for a quick toddy and off to the lower berth! Chloe, you can make it with the Crown Royal Ken has been buying me Yes Thank You, both!

I won't have time to edit all the 8mm movies I have from the family visits to Durango in '66 and again in '68 but here's a few screen grabs from the 1968 trip:

And, here's your's truly bringing up the rear! Olive jacket and all...

You bet I'm smiling!

Last week Mrs. Pullman and I went to pick up (another) chicken coop and little did I know then that it would include a CAT! She will be No. 6! For several reasons they couldn't keep her and were planning to take her to the kitty gulag. I did some quick negotiating and now she is making her home here, in the kitty resort spa !

How could I say no???

Her former family called her Jingles. She told us her preferred name is Penelope.

I'll get caught up with the Diner folks in the next day or so... very busy the last few days, family visits, grandchildren's Holiday plays and such!

Train front:

Cleaning up for a few visitors coming over later this afternoon for an operating session. I had been putting down carpet and paneling walls below the benchwork. Lots of tools and scraps all around. Finally got things pretty decent.

Had some bench time the other day and tried my hand at soldering together an etched brass yard light tower kit from Alkem Models Yes

I have to admit, for my first attempt at soldering something of this magnitude it turned out pretty well!

Well, here it is, 4:30 AM! How does that happen?

I'll stop in again later.

Best Wishes to All! Angel

Wife is back from taking care of her son. Four days of IV antibiotics helped him turn the corner, more sutures in his drain, and he came home. She called just as she was leaving his house, 3 hr. drive, and gave me time to do the dishes, vacuum, and pick up the house in general. Wasn't all that much to clean, I do dishes as I cook, and the dogs, Pre-Wash, and Pot Scrub, cut down on wash time. He has another 3 hour session of chemo in two weeks, and she will be going back down then. White stuff forecast for tomorrow, actually the rest of the week sounds lousey, cold, wet, white. May do some duck hunting in the bad weather.

Started running wire again, working on my turntable. I am isolating the tracks to run the engines in and out of the roundhouse. I have some repair work to do on the railings on the turntable, was soldering a feed wire, and palsied, melted a gap in the rail. After all the wires are taken care of I will go back and repair all the damage I create. There goes the career as a brain surgeon.

My neighbor acquired a used Yamaha 25 hp. outboard, it is oil injected, and the oil light was on, and the engine would not run properly, had him run a tank of 50-1 to the engine, runs fine, at some point I will help him fix the injection system. The engine was in a garage since 1997-not run-so the lines to the carb. are probably blocked with mung. The pump is cam operated so that will eliminate a diaphram being bad.

Tomorrow will put up the tree in a box for inside, and walk down to the cove and harvest a small tree for the deck. The wife likes to look at the lights, and the birds use it for shelter, as well as a hide when one of the hawks makes a pass through the feeders. Doves and blue jays are their main target.

Time to bank the fire for the night, 25 outside right now, 74 here at my desk, burning wood is a real pain in the south end of a north bound cow, but it does feel good on the bones. I have oil heat, but it just isn't the same. Forgot to clean the tracks the other night, found wood ash really helps the traction when I ran one of my engines.

prayers for those in need

Kid That was funny, kind of surprised Lion did not say something about.

I was too.

U25 Saga: Managed to find a way to improve my budget for them. I have managed to sell an engine that I bought in error a few years ago. It was doing nothing but sitting on my storage table. (It is too new for what I run. It seemed like a good idea at the time.) My plan is to reroute the fund I get from the sale to get components for the two engines that I need.

I made some unplanned purchases this week. My Dell laptop is about 6 years old now, & starting to act a little weird at times. So I've been looking at various new laptops for a couple of weeks & have had my eye on another Dell model. Not the biggest or fastest, but sufficient for my needs. By chance, I looked at their web site again this past Monday, & the price was slashed by 46%. Couldn't pass that up. It was delivered on Wednesday, but I havent had a chance to even boot it up yet.

Friday, the copy mode on my "5 in 1" printer quit working. It still prints, but copy & scan just result in an error message. I use the copy feature a lot, so that meant a replacement was needed. Found an HP on sale for $77.00 less than retail price. This one is wireless, which is interesting. Quite easy to set up as well. I will probably only use it for making copies though, as my old printer does produce a little better quality print output. So neither purchase was planned, but the savings were quite good.

We put up a Dept. 56 "Dicken's Village" display every Christmas, so I will begin bringing everything down from the attic this week. It will take a solid 2 to 3 days to get that project wrapped up. But the result is worth the effort. Speaking of Christmas, all the gifts having been purchased for over a week, finally were gift wrapped & are now waiting to be delivered.

Another good weekend railfanning with 13 trains on Saturday, & 11 today. Foreign power were a CSX & a couple of Union Pacifics. Saturday we caught the Pennsylvania heritage unit.

Have a happy & safe week.

Spent the day multi-tasking.  I was watching football and replacing a headlight in one of my GP9s.  Why do they put incandescent bulbs in as OEM headlights, anyway?  LEDs must be cheaper, and so much more reliable.  Once I got past the soldering I added beer-drinking to my task list.  By the evening, though, I had the engine all buttoned up again and took it for a few spins around the layout.  Good to have it working again.  I need to spend more time on the trains.

Made a discovery while working on organizing the Train Room today. At some point, I evidently picked up a BLI 2-10-2 in ATSF. Have no recollection of doing so. That is kinda scary.Huh?

Rob Been there and done that as well! Well, not a BLI engine but found a Athearn I don't know where it came from. Happens more on rolling stock than engines. I all so find my self wondering "Did I sale or trade this engine" when I cannot find something? Hmm

CN Charlie Hope this go well and you have a Doctor as good as my daughters.

Rick So do you still like the job better than the last one?

Ulrich Good photo. Glad you are hanging around again!

Galaxy Hope things are going better on the home front.

Well I am beat and time to Dinner

 So later, Ken

Chamomile tea, please.

***CN Charlie: Mahindra needs some oil lines replaced, the John Deere is down because their mechanics can't fix anything right, and the McCormick is actually running well for the first time since I've had it, thanks to an independent tractor mechanic I found.

***Ray, neat pics. FUN FUN FUN

Made terrific progress cleaning and organizing the Train Room. There is hope.

Janie I'll have the Talapia Fish Fry with french fries and a side of cole slaw.  Oh some dark roast decaf would be nice as well....  Yes use my R&GV RR Mug please.

Charlie, good luck with the proceedure coming up.  Good that you have some projects you can be doing while you are recovering...

I have been busier than a cat covering poop on a marble floor the last few days.  Saturday i spent over at a Scout Leader friends house (another comissioner) finishing up the online items for our two units to get rechartered on Wednesday.  The new Comittee Chair was there to actually learn the ropes for the computer stuff.  She took over in a matter of minutes and just got it done (quicker than the other guy and I could have done it!).  She is an occupational therapist and uses the computer often each day to file reports.....  Way beyond us old "ex Spurts"........  After we finished the chartering materials we talked for about an hour or so about the units and where we need to improve and how.  We also shared some history about the units and how they have been developing over the past several years and why.  The other Comissioner and I then drove over to Newark, NY to get the signature of the Head of the organization that "owns" the Pack and Troop.  After about 8 signatures and a lengthy talk about the health of the units, we went to lunch...  I finally dropped the other comissioner back at his house mid-afternoon and got home to get everything packed to be the "Jolly Old Elf" yesterday at the R&GV RR Museum for the "Santa Trains".  The runs went quite well and we had packed trains for 5 trips to the "North Pole" where I acted very surprised to have all the visiters during my busiest season of the year.....  Had my picture taken with a couple hundred kids (and adults...) and had a lot of fun!  Photo below:

Today I had to get to church early as the Family was doing the lighting of the Advent Wreath this morning.  Since my son had to work, Grandpa got to participate and do some of the readings and prayers.  Catching up with other items with close deadlines and grocery shopping took care of the afternoon....

Hope you all are having a great season.  Prayers for all in need!
