Hello diners.  We have been out trying to harvest wild rice this week.  The crop is pretty bad this year as lake water level is very high compared to normal and the plants have pretty much drown out.  My duty is to drive a 35 ft boat that collects the rice from the harvesters.  In a good year we would have now sent 24,000 lbs for processing.  We may have 4,000 lbs if we are lucky.  By the way, the vehicle in my avitar is a wild rice harvester with me at the wheel.

Got to see the first exhibition hockey game of the junior B season last Sunday night.  The local team pulled out a 4-3 win after trailing for 2-1/2 periods.

Internet service in the north is pretty basic.  Tried to watch MRVP clip last night and it took almost 30 minutes to stream a five minute clip.

The weather has been very cool and windy here for the past month.  Last night it rained all night long.

YGW, hope you are not suffering from pain much longer.

Lion, enjoyed comments about drills with cords.

Jim

Mornin' everyone!

Oooooo!  Is that Cajon Chef Ryan in the kitchen this morning?  Well then I will have his famous Eggs Benedict with Sweet Potato Hash and a side of his Whole Wheat Sour Dough bread toasted (real butter please).  need a pot of Marrakesh Express dark Roast Coffee to wash that down with as well.

Good to see you again Ryan!  Hope you are doing well.

I'm busy getting thiongs packed for the training weekend I am helping to present for the Handicapped Troop.  Still have a lot to do, and want to build some fence on the layout as well today.

Catch you all later!

. . .Ride on Road,  Will you be getting any rain out of the tropical storm ?. . .

Newton came and went without much fanfare for us. It passed a ways east of us and we got some rain yesterday morning but not as much as with some of the other storms. There were flood warnings in place, but no flooding.

I am getting a little worried about YGW. It has been a week since his last visit. At that time he was hoping to get out of the "Horsepiddle" the next day. I hope all is well.

Mr. B. It is sure going to be a long Hockey season for you. Does your league always get under way this early. Glad you had a good game there the other night. Keep your stick on the ice......

I play pick-up hockey now.  I haven't been in a league for a very long time - 10 years or more.  But, Tuesday Night Hockey is an institution, or at least I'm an institution at Tuesday Night Hockey.  I've been playing at that rink on Tuesday nights since Bobby Orr won the Stanley Cup for the Boston Bruins back in 1972.  I've managed to retire from work before retiring from hockey.

We play all year long.  Honestly, I don't think I could stop for the summer and resume in the fall, so we all just keep playing week after week.

Lunchtime!

It´s a hot day, so I´ll just have a Pastrami sandwich and a Beer to go with it, please!

I finished the wiring of the layout lighting fixture this morning and much to my amazement, it worked! However, those color-variable LEDs area disappointment. The light is not bright enough to really light up the layout and the shadows are colored (pink - Ick!). I have a few normal halogen spotslights leftover, which will do the job, but I will keep the LEDs to see how the perform in a night scene.

Sorry, no picures yet.

Good to see Chef Ryan back in this place!

All the best!

Just stopping by for a quick snack, maybe a few scones and a cup of mud from the bottom of the tender cistern.

Der, funny you should mention those pesky fruit flies! These are NOT the fruit flies that I remember as a younger man. These things have mutated into something crossed between a carpet beetle and a stink bug with a little dog flea thrown in. I have swatted them with a 20 oz. fly swatter and they buzz right off, unscathed!

The fruit flies I remember as a kit were frail, flimsy little things... not these!

We keep a cordless vacuum in the kitchen, not a dust buster but a bug sucker, and go on a "bug hunt" like Spanky used to, except more high tech!

YGW, I pray that you are all on the mend over there. Angel

Chef Ryan! Glad to meet you. I'm one of the newbies here. I hope to see you in here more often. I'd love to hear some of those recollections of dining car menus!

You have me in awe over the inch-and-a-half Pennsy GP30! There was a time when I played around with the "live steam" crowd. There were several tracks here in N.E. Ohio and I would transport my Chessie System GP-50 to them back in the day!

Loads of fun but it involved some real hefty work, too. When your ballast arrives in a ten-ton truck it's time to re-think this part of the hobby!

Well, I'm going back to my lower berth for a little shut-eye. I told the porter to wake me at Poughkeepsie. I want to see the engine change at Harmon.

I hope you are all doing well and that those in need will find comfort and tranquility...

Regards, Ed

Whistling

Evening Gang,

Chloe, I'll have one of the Salmon Dinners that Chef Ryan has prepared, and bring over the blender so I can liquify it to go down my tube.

Chef Ryan,  So good to see you back in the Diner. I has been a long time for sure. Hope all is well with you and your family.  The new members here sure missed a treat from you when you used to post the menus from all of the Name trains and some of the lesser ones as well.  I so enjoyed that.

I haven't been posting or answering much this summer, but I have stayed abreast of whats going on here. It is starting to cool off quite a lot here in the evenings, have to wear a warmer jacket to take "Cody" (new Dog) for his evening stroll. We put on about 2 to 3 kilometers each eve. It sure has helped my legs as well as his exercise.

Ulrich,  Glad that Claus was able to assist you and give you some friendship time. Looks like a very good job there. Show us when you get it lit up. Prayers for your health and situation, you and Petra are always in our thoughts.

Ride on Road,  Will you be getting any rain out of the tropical storm ?

YGW,    Sure hope you, your Dad, Daughter and SIL all get healed up in short order. It is not often that all those things hit one family so quickly together. Prayers for you Brother.

Mr. B.  It is sure going to be a long Hockey season for you. Does your league always get under way this early. Glad you had a good game there the other night.  Keep your stick on the ice......

Just a few RIP Track repairs going on here. Will get back to some landscaping as the weather gets cooler and we shorten up the walks some.

Work the next two days, so I had better shower and shave and get to bed. Some of the drugs I am on make me a little dozy and I don't want to fall asleep at work.

Good health and happy hearts to all from coast to coast and around this planet of ours.

It has been a rainy, drizzly day in the Valley of the Sun as the remnants of Hurricane Newton pass by. I do find it interesting that desert weather is affected by hurricanes. On the bright side, it's 3:00 in the afternoon and only 85F.

I pulled the trigger on the remaining skirting for the layout. I decided I liked the "Sage" color for the skirting. It adds a little color to an otherwise bland office. I am still impressed with the price. It comes in custom lengths of one-foot increments. The skirting I ordered is 36" tall, and is costing $6.50 per foot. This includes a professional shirred pleat, serge-stitched side and bottom, and 2" velcro along the top. Mrs. ROR said we would be hard-pressed to make them ourselves for less. It will be nice to cover up all of the storage containers under the layout.

Good evening Diners – this was started a while ago, so mainly deals with older news…I’ll just post it and dash out.
Ed:
DER, I can relate to those tomatoes. They seem to be starved for moisture and when it finally arrives they gorge themselves until they (literally) burst! Still good eatin' though.
…and the fruit flies know that too! On which subject, there is this “thought for the day”
Excellent Trackside Diner Bow Cajun Chef Ryan (whom, I think, Flip (fec153) had in mind) would be amused.  Maybe your Chef Ryan is suspicious of that bag one of the guests is carrying – looks like they could be from “The Department”!
As  CNCharlie says, it would be good to see more of the MIAs swing by. I’ve Cajun Chef Ryan and Cape Jim’s email addresses, maybe I’ll drop them a line…
Henry:
NJ is going to get the most damage as the storm stalls there tomorrow.
…which would be today – but it may hang longer as it , or what’s left of it, which may be quite a bit as the ocean is WARM – is not due to be off Halifax NS until Friday!
JaBear:
der5997, I found it interesting that that site you referred me to on Northern slang included Birmingham, as my Dad would say he was from the Midlands.
I noticed that too. Living in the North East places like Manchester were regarded as Midlands! Living, as we did before moving north, pretty much anything north of Luton (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luton for those in class paying attention) was considered Midlands if not outright North!
(As aside small towns here in NZ who only have a volunteer fire brigade use old air raid sirens  to call out the men, my Dad still hates that sound after all this time!!)
Those memories fade very slowly I find. The same example holds true here for me!
I guess it was an indication of how little people used to travel, that there was so much variety in accents in such small distances.
And it’s not just accent but actual language, as in local dialects. The first Christmas we were in Newcastle, the company for whom I worked had their annual dance at the Ashington (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashington for those still with us) We of course had no clue as to where “The Miner’s Hall” was, and since it was dark we couldn’t see a whole lot of signs, had there even been any. We asked directions once in the town, and the lady said “Well hinney, ye gans doon…” and those were the last words of English she gave us, the rest was pure Ashington dialect, which we learned later is different from those of communities surprisingly close by!
My Mum (Kiwi born) said that when she first met Dad she found him difficult to understand and hoped she made the right response at the appropriate time. Having heard a recording of Dad talking I can understand!!
One of Mrs DER’s college class mates was from Birmingham, and so conscious of her accent in the south of England that she would introduce herself “ I’m Shirley from Birmingham, before anybody asks!” She is I think in Australia now, but we’ve lost touch.
And it can be funny how some folk retain their accent, my Granddad from the Scottish Highlands who immigrated when he was 20 still had a very strong accent, especially talking on the phone, when he passed away at 93. I, myself had occasion to call a business in Georgia, US, and while I’m sure the bloke was polite, I’m not sure who had the greatest lack of understanding, (several faxes sorted the matter out.)
When we arrived in Toronto, the neighbours across the street were from Manchester – had been there for about that time, 20+ years, and you could swear that they had just stepped off the boat! Our next door neighbour was Scotts, but nae braw d’ye ken?
Ray: As always, great scenes! Thanks for sharing those.
…all the foregoing was before we took off for a Labour Day over-nighter to the Valley – got back Tuesday afternoon via the LHS in Halifax, where I scored the 3rd Pola N station I needed so that my 3 mainline stations are the same build, and once painted up will look as if the same company owns them! In order of acquisition, the one left over from the last layout
Then the one I got last month from eBay
and yesterday’s prize – but I will have to get rid of the glued in curtains!
So, things progress bit by bit. Still haven’t got serious about the wiring – that really has to take precedence now. I’m hoping, as I said to Cape Jim, that 3 years of storage hasn’t made the NCE DCC system go sideways.
If it’s cool enough, and the humidity has dropped I’ll be mowing after dinner for as long as is practical. Have to wear my bug coat. Last evening I was really attacked by the mosquitoes.

CentralGulf:

Just to put the above in perspective, I recently purchased a brand new 1600 sf home on 2.5 acres with a 720 sf attached fuly insulated and finished layout room (er, I mean garage ) for $200k. Property taxes are around $800 a year.Tennessee, in case anyone is wondering.

Same sort of thing here as this news today indicates. https://ca.news.yahoo.com/eastsizing-move-p-e-success-130000437.html

Dave: That modular club sounds interesting – I had a couple of modules in a smallish set up on Vancouver Island way back. I can appreciate their caution…
Ulrich: Lifted our spirits to see you had a decent day! I know you don’t go into details of your difficulties, but we are thinking of you.Angel
See you later…

Good Evening!

I actually had a quite enjoyable day today. My friend Claus called yesterday evening and invited me over to his place. He came to fetch me in the morning, took me to our Home Depot, where I got some lumber and a few electrical wiring things, all being paid for by a gift voucher I gotr for my birthday. We continued to his place, which is a little over 20 miles from my home. We made use of the nice and sunny weather by building the contraption for the layout lighting outdoor. I got a nice sunburn! After a nice lunch consisting of a Welsh interpretation of a cottage pie, we finished the thing and he too me back to my place. The layout lighting is now installed on my layout, but not yet wired completely - that´s for me to do tomorrow! Not much of a job, though!

It was nice to have a chance of setting one´s mind on other things for a change and to escape the misery we are in for a few moments. It´s good to have friends like Claus, who really care!

All the best!

We won our hockey game last night, coming back in the last 20 minutes or so from 2 goals down to win by 3.  The other goalie had a phenomenal game.  I was OK, but I was better at the end.

Real estate has gotten crazy here, too.  I was reading an article about a proposed development nearby.  The builder said he was hoping to put in some "affordable housing, in the range of $800,000."  Considering that the rest of the development will likely be north of a million and a half, like all new construction here, it sounds like a bargain.

Don't need anything this morning, Flo. Just making a quick stopover.

Hobby Front: Got the boxcar yesterday that I will convert to a cleaner car. A few issues with it. One being that the wheelsets were a little too short. (They wobbled laterally in the trucks. Happened to have some extra Athearn wheelsets that fit the bill.) The other issues will take a little bit more research and, most likely, taking the car with me when I go on vacation.

Good Evening Diners,

Brunhilda, I'll have a chamomile tea, please.

V8Dennis:  It looks like SoCal real estate is back to its pre- bubble levels.  I guess no one learned a thing from the last one.  If Porter Ranch is in the 700s, you can bet the rest of the area is right around that price point.

As for Tennessee home prices, they've always been lower than some other areas of the country.

Left work early today.  Have a bad cough.  Think it might be bronchitis, but not sure.  We're doing the usual, chamomile tea, garlic, echinacia, etc.

Wish I had something more interesting to report

Anyway, hello to all, and I hope everyone is ok and safe.

Hi gang!

I attended my first meeting of the Barrie / Allandale Railway Modellers tonight. I'm not sure why it has taken me so long to take the plunge, but at least the ball is rolling now.

They are a very nice group of guys. They were very friendly and everybody introduced themselves straight away.

They have a reasonably sized operating oval which is made up of the modules that they take to shows. There are 3 or four more or less parallel tracks with cross-overs between the tracks, plus some spurs. That occupies the center of the room.

They also have quite a few older modules around the outside of the layout room which are currently being re-constructed. They will build a couple more modules to allow traffic to move from the center ovals to the outside tracks. Unfortunately the aisle width is a bit tight, as I discovered when I had to get past Steve so I could see Rick's Fast Tracks turnouts. Getting past Steve was rather an intimate affair!Smile, Wink & GrinLaughLaugh

In order to become a member I have to attend eight meetings. Then there is a probation period (not sure how long) before becoming a full member. I think the requirements are quite reasonable given the fact that there seem to be some oddballs out there who might have a hard time getting along with other folks based on my observations of previous participants in these forums.

I'm looking forward to participating with the group, assuming they will have me of course.

Best wishes to everyone!

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

V8Vega

The median price of a previously owned house in the San Fernando Valley is $623,000. 4% higher than a year ago and the highest level in 9 years. It gained $23,000 from June I read in the paper.

It seems hard to believe, there are a lot of towns in the valley with a lot of small old  not maintained real good houses on narrow lots.

I read in the paper not long ago that the median price of a house in Porter Ranch was $710,000.

I wonder if the west valley is the reason for this high average price.

Just to put the above in perspective, I recently purchased a brand new 1600 sf home on 2.5 acres with a 720 sf attached fuly insulated and finished layout room (er, I mean garage ) for $200k. Property taxes are around $800 a year.

 Evening Diners

Flo, Ed will have a Beer in a B&O Mug. I will have a EM1 Keg with a straw!

Today sucked Rail Spikes! Nancy would not leave me a lone viva phone and I was ready to walk out! She was trying to give me a pep talk, lets just say it did not sound like one to me! Exmaple, I have the highest gross profit margen in the company. She says that is my problem, I won't beg for a sale! Angry Half the offers I call in for a price approval are turned down by the GM! Nancy has the lowest profit % in the company normally. I will pit one of my $1000.00 deal against her $2000.00 deals any day! I swear Nancy does not understand the word Profit!

All she see is the Dollar sign, $2000.00 has to better than $1000.00, Right! Big Smile Wrong No She wrote one deal up for $4800.00 a few years ago, profit was $213.00? Whistling Laugh

While I have more to say, need to go on line and look for a used car.

Evening Diners,

I'll be taking a vacation  for the week, so I'll be leaving tomorrow morning. I will be a radio silence since I don't know if i've free WiFi service.

The dogs will still be at home with the other three. Two of which needs to step up in responsibilities of caring and watch their every move. Especially my sister's dog Charles, he's like a Three year old child that doesn't listen.

I wonder how the family will get along without me. The answer: not well I'm their structure that holds them together, I'm the nonlazy one.

If I see a UP train passing thru the desert I'll take some photos. And post them here, so see you guys next Tuesday.

Another glorious morning in the Valley of the Sun. The temperature was in the mid-70s for this morning's ride. It felt so good, I decided to extend the ride an extra 5 miles for a total of 28 miles. My legs have fully recovered from the time off.

I do enjoy three-day weekends. With all of my other commitments, and my w*%k schedule, I have very little free time on a normal weekend. A three-day weekend is a gift of a day. I finally finished cutting and mounting all of my fascia, and I am mostly happy with the way it turned out. It is not perfect, but then again, neither am I. Mrs. ROR says it looks great so I am happy.

Edit: Adding a picture of yesterday's accomplishment. I hung the green skirt to see what I think. I think it may be growing on me.

Temperture in the 50s x 3 days. Some knuckmelhead in the boiler room turned the heat on.
