Other hobbies
Posted by JeremyB on Saturday, July 30, 2016 7:20 AM

Hi guys

a topic I like to ask every now and then to see what other hobbies you guys enjoy aside from trains and model railroading.

me, I enjoy table top sports games as in strat o matic baseball and football. I also enjoy console sports games and text based sports simulation games on the PC. There hobbies like trains that you can come back too at any point.

i also enjoy collecting trading card games as in magic the gathering.

outdoor hobbies include hockey in the winter, reading mr Beasley hockey write ups got me back out on the ice. usually in the summer I'm out on the bike but this year has been too hot to enjoy a ride.

Mine are console and pc games, home renovation, and fantasy football. When we recently moved, I lost space for my second love (trains being first), saltwater reef aquariums.

Other than Model Railroading I enjoy Photography.  Taking pictures of model railroads or railfaning photography is a good way of combining the two.

All the best.

When MR temporarily stales off, I swing back to road cycling (combine Tour de France with a pudgy white dude and you've got it pretty much nailed). I do Gran Fondos and the like when family, work, and laziness allow me to train.

I actually love tropical fish as well, but I know the way I swing in and out of hobbies; it has to not die if I ignore it for a year or two.

Model Railroading is my main hobby.  But I also enjoy woodworking, video gaming (Xbox and PC), and reading.

Wednsday is comc book day.

I have a 8*12 room with 6 display case that is filled with Transformers, all G1 from when it started along with the newer Masterpiece versions(of the originals).

Cars:1989 Turbo Trans AM modified

1991 Formula 350, undergoing floor pan replacement and LS1 swap

1991 GTA stock at this time, final decision rests on getting the above 2 100% sorted out.

I read a ton period as well, but love railroad history, so consider from the first transcontinental to now for history.

Well when its quite the model railways get some attention... I am a mountain bike enthusiast and love hitting the outback in the 4wd with family for some camping ... I have recently been studying the local 4wd recreation and club scene on an endevour to consolidate them and release the communities hidden potential. On other levels I try to improve my parenting skills...note I use the word try...lol...with a bit of home renovation on the side.

Cheers...

Stu, what kind of tropical fish do you raise?  I am not currently in the hobby, but I used to breed discus.  A wonderful hobby.

Oh, not anymore Rich, it's been years. The fish tend to live longer than my attention span.

It was mostly angelfish and various knife fish. Did manage to lose a few discus fish; tough little guys to keep happy.

Well, before I became disabled, I would try to build an N scale layout, Still sitting just like it was since Sept. 14th, 2012. I can no longer go up and down the stairs. I collected Firearms, Model car kits, Nascar and other model car kits, WW2 and Cleveland Indians, St Louis Cardinals and Cleveland Browns Autographs, Bottle Caps, Soda cans and Beer cans and about anything else you can think of. I just get bored laying in bed and collect this or that just for something to do..... I forgot, photography as well. I always have a camera with me when I get driven to one of my doctors appointments. I have one Doctor In Marion, Ohio. I usually see at least on their. I have another in Mansfield, Ohio. Pretty much hit and miss and one in Mount Vernon, Ohio. I would love to catch one going to the old Rolls Royce plant. Last I knew, they still got shippments and when I had to spend 3 days in the hospital there. I know I heard a horn the one day!

Up until last year when I sold my other main hobby, I liked to build a 1927 Bugatti 35B replica (40 year project with 1967 VW Beetle). I still do woodwork projects, photography and gardening.

My problem is too many interests.  I am trying to master several Beethoven piano sinatas, doing carpentry projects on old house, studying history, fishing and helping harvest wild rice.  All these take away from model railroading.  As I am into hand laying all track, layout building goes slowly.  Next carpentry/woodworking project is to build a good modeling work station.  Hopefully will do this in late October when we return to the mid-Ohio River Valley.  To keep the wife happy, also play bridge one afternoon a week plus sub in a group a couple evenings a month.  Being retired only creates so much time and most of us can fill up all that time easily.

I take photographs periodically and post to Instagram. Usually using my phone or sometimes a Panasonic Lumix I've had a few years. I like shooting landscape scenes the most.

Love puttering around in the garden when the weather's nice.

Also enjoy reading, watching history videos, studying local history, and biology, including local plant life. Plus swimming, and going to the gym to lift weights occasionally.

I love cycling, I have two 14-speed road bikes. One a 1980s Giant RS940, and the other a 1990 Bridgestone RB-1. The latter is my baby. I'd like to add a couple good touring bags and try some long distance rides.

I love kayaking, and get so excited for an afternoon of kayaking on the Susquehanna with my friends, or by myself.

Music. High-end audio, dedicated purpose built listening room/studio. I've also played professionally on & off over the years and still record and produce CD for a local chorale/orchestra. Also follow Formula 1 and some cycling like the Tour de France. Do a lot of cycling too. Just bought a Trek Marlin 5 as a more practical everyday bike. The two Schwinn Paramount pro road bikes I have are a little too much for just running errands or casual riding.

Aside from model railroading and railfanning, my other major hobby is writing. I generally stick to the horror genre but ocasionally try something different. I'm also friends with an FLDS escapee and am helping her write an autobiography.

I also enjoy hiking, camping and being outdoors, photography and brewing beer.

Modeling the Pennsylvania Railroad in N Scale.

My layout has been pretty much finished for years now. it's just small things now like detailing and weathering cars and operation.

and strat o matic sports games are a once a year purchase. Only thing I have been buying lately is the magic the gathering cards.

I, too enjoy photography, as well as model railroading. I spent 5 years drag racing in my younger days. Health and the prohibitive cost have relegated to spectator status, but I still enjoy watching it. Our new (2016) Mustang gives us opportunity to hit the road on road trips and take pictures.

I spent 50 years in Communications and Electronics.  I retired in 2007; my brain was fried from new technology so my model railroad is it for me.  At 79 I just feel lucky I can still do my train stuff.  Years ago I was into RC planes; I was a lousy pilot so it was much cheaper to stick with model railroading.

Outside of trains, I enjoy collecting model cars from the Blue, Red, and Orange teams. I also enjoy playing video games on my Nintendo DS Lite/Nintendo 3DS, and Nintendo DS XL. The XL is unique because it has over sized screens, while the DS Lite and 3DS have normal sized screens.

You can guess the real names behind the teams I'm sure.

1/24-1/25 model trucks and equipment, including a 30 yr old diorama that's still a WIP, and the scratchbuilt RC crane in my avatar. Machining with Sherline mill and lathe. Also some welding now and then, and wrenching on my own vehicles and such.
