Weekend Photo Fun 3/31/16-4/3/16

Well Guys, it's the weekend following Easter, and I can't believe it's already April.  Anyway...Let's start this... I have a couple things going on right now

First off, is a another Styrene special....a former Rio Grande hopper, turned into a Wheeling and Lake Erie extended height hopper use for coke loading only.

I still need to do the wheels, some more weathering, reflecting stripes.etc

Next, I finally made some progress on my Wheeling and Lake Erie business car 1990.  All that needs done is a special decal printed out for the sides, putting the theater window in, and dullcoating it, and it will be done. Custom Decals btw

Well, I also finished up this one locomotive project I've had going on since Christmas....another Wheeling SD40-2

Currently waiting on replacement handrail stuff to come in from BLI.

Okay, so you've seen what I've been working on...Let's see your good stuff.

These are the opinions of an under 35 , from the east end of, and modeling, the same section of the Wheeling and Lake Erie railway.  As well as a freelanced road (Austinville and Dynamite City railroad).

With my refurbishing of old rolling stock almost finished, I have begun on old locomotives as well. Much cleaning of wheels, gears and so on..and making sure all lighting is LED.  Here are the latest two to leave the bench.

Good morning everone from cloudy and mild Northeast Ohio.

jimmy, good work on your coke  and business cars, and a nice start on the SD40-2.

Tony, nice weathering especially the CSX, looks like the junk I see here in Cleveland all the time.

Sorry, Bear and Terry, can't see Youtube at work so videos are out of the question.

Managed to finish a couple of cars this week!

Intermountain PC&F 40' Reefer Kit, the NYC purchased some reefers from PC&F for use in transporting banannas from East Coast ports to other parts of the country. Replaced the plastic sill steps with metal ones from Yarmouth Model Works made for this car, substituted a Plano roofwalk for the plastic one. Car was painted with Floquil Reefer Orange, Scalecoat II Boxcar Red and Black and then lettered with Greg Komar Decals.

Intermountain 40' PS1 Boxcar Kit, painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red and Black and lettered with Mask Island Decals.  The Copper Range was a 108 mi. railroad that ran the length of Michigans Keweenaw Penisula on the Upper Penisula.  Railroad was in service from the 1890's to 1972, mainly serviced the copper mines on the Keweenaw.

My latest acquisition, some motive power (Including 1776)  for the Delta Turn which supplied Auto Parts for the Ford Fast to the west coast from various Ford Plants on the DT&I.

Thanks for looking!

Jimmy, Good progress on the biz car.

Tony, I really love the look of lit numberboards.

Bear, Great videos! Looks like that new steamer is running well. Got a special pic for you just belowBig Smile

Terry, That Wow sound is really Wow! Gonna have to write up that head-end crew for failing to light things up, though.Wink

Rick, I got all weak in the knees when I saw that Copper Range boxcar! If it wasn't for Colorado narrowgauge and the Monon, I'd be modeling the KeewenawThumbs Up

I'm close to wrapping up my boarding house and co-op store at the Sunnyside Mill in Eureka. Built the basement and framed things up.

I built the bottom part as if the whole shebang started off as a much smaller building, then it was rebuilt. I took this pic to show how it might have looked prior to the current version.

Progress was rapid...

Lighting things up.

There easy access for additional interior work, but for now I'm just finishing details, like the steam line over to the mill.

A specially artful one for Bear.

Needs some weathering, signage, and a few more details, but it's open for business.

Jimmy, some great-looking motive power and rolling stock.

Tony, love the GP30, the weathering looks terrific.

Bear, Cool videos.

Rick, Very nice motive power and rolling stock.

This week, I took delivery of Broadway Limited's highly anticipated Baldwin Centipedes. Here's a few shots of them at the recently-completed Route 53 overpass near Gallitzin, PA.

Unfortunatly, right after the above pictures were taken, the decoder in the lead A unit shorted out. So the centipedes are sidelined while a replacement is shipped. In the mean time, this RS3 and Geep will handle things:

I started construction of a road on the northend by the furniture factory. This is one of my least favorite jobs. I never seem to get it the way I like.

Thanks for starting off another exciting episode of WPF, Jimmy! It looks like your W&LE execs will be travelling in style on the 1990! What kind of car did you start your business car project with, Jimmy?

Nice work on the weathering, Tony. I've got to dedicate some time toward weathering my rolling stock, too! You have to be in the right mood to tackle it...

Thanks for the entertaining videos, Bear!

I've also got a bunch of QSIs to convert, Terry. At one time they were "cutting edge"—not so much so today with TCS and Loksound raising the sound bar!

Rick, that 1776 is one of the nicest Bicentennial paint scheme I've seen. Remember how the GG1 looked? And a few other examples that were... bizarre Indifferent

Mike, You are doing a great job of adding little details to your empire all the time! Looks terriffic Yes

Roads can be tricky, Rich. Keep at it until you have the look you want. Looks good to me!

So...

My project for the week involved a whole drawer full of DPM brick wall modules that have been collecting dust for some years now.

Here's what they look like as assembled into a "Selios Style" background factory building.

and the backside with windows attached and bracing in place. I salvaged the clear acrylic from some Rivarossi boxes that I've been hanging on to, always the "saver"!

Some of the brick detail before the gray mortar wash was applied. DPM has been around for years but you can still get good results from their modular wall sections. A boon to kitbashesr!

Here we are with LED lighting strips installed and four Walthers dock lights. The module for the Zippo neon sign is stuck to the back with Velcro. The windows have been fogged with matte spray, some have Venetian blinds installed and some are "blacked out". I put kapton tape over some of the LEDs to give them an amber appearance.

For the back board I glued these multi-colored impressionist prints from a calendar I was hanging on to. I figured anything that would break up the interior coloration would look OK since this is a background building and will be at least six feet from the viewer.

And here's the final result (taken at 4 AM this morning Zzz )! There's 109 windows on this puppy! I was going to have nine floors... but that's another storey Whistling

I added this little button plunger so I can change the Zippo neon sign functionality just by tapping the button that looks like a roof-top stack!

And here's a trackside view...

Now I'm ready to add some exterior details, vents, fire escapes, pipes, a painted sign where the large brick expanse is on the fourth floor, maybe a water tower on the roof.

Thanks and Happy Modeling!

Ed

A bit of real and a bit of model. I lucked out catching the Reading heritage unit on the way home from work, no fooling, it made for a good Friday.

And staying with big Reading engines here is a K-1 with some added smoke.

Jimmy, Thanks for getting the WPF ball rolling and glimpse into your current projects.

Tony, I like your GT boxcar, especially the rusted roof and paint fade.  May I ask how you accomplished the fade?

Thanks to all, regards, Peter

The fade I did on this was white acrylic brushed on and then with clean brushes, brushed most back off. Drying time is fairly quick, so I take that into account. I used a small amount of paint also... Similar to this http://theweatheringshop.com/dbrush.html

Well, I started with a Walters mainline coach and removed the sides  I then cut out the windows in styrene sheets. The end is a train station products kit. I just need to find some information on the interior. amazingly no information is available online.

So so many good projects going on here, and it is impossible to comment on all of them. Mike, I like your stuff as always.

the Pennsy stuff is wonderful as well. My second love is the pennsy

the lighting project looks interesting.

Those are the same LED strips that I mentioned in your thread about structure lighting, Jimmy. Mike has lots of insight on LEDs as well.

Picked this Hallmark brass scale test weight car on Ebay last week for $18 and fixed some loose handrails (minimum soldering) and then painted, decaled and weathered it. I don't plan to actually run it so I hard mounted the couplers. Just wanted an unusual piece of rolling stock to sit on one of the short turntable tracks for visual effect.

I'd say you got a good deal, Bob!

Looks great, especially the decal work Yes

Here's an Overland model ($195!!)  that I came across just a few days ago.

I have one of the Walthers releases in plastic... probably paid more than $18 for IT back when they were available.

Lot's of great looking stuff gents and here is one of mine; a GN PS Express boxcar which is in front of the REA warehouse on the Mt Hood RR.  The car is a McKean puppy, not quite accurate for GN, but good enough.  I used one of Champs Supersets to letter the puppy.Cowboy

Ed:

Really nice job on the DPM building! I love all the lighting.

Bob:

Nice catch. I have tried several times to win auctions for test cars but the prices went above my limit each time.

Ed and Dave:

I don't think the seller of the Scale Test car knew what it was as he listed it as a train trailer car. I didn't know who made it until I got it and did some research, then found it was a Hallmark and they are going for $75 and up.

The decals are extreeeeeemly small and some took 2-3 tries to get them on. Some aren't perfectly straight but it is hard to tell. Still came out OK for my needs.
