I am perplexed ... I am looking for a post. I can't find it ... how do I search? I think I am going nuts ... the search has got to be right here somewhere!
Look over to the right of your post. Just above the "users online" you will see "search the community". However don't be too disappointed the search function isn't too robust.

Time...It marches on...without ever turning around to see if anyone is even keeping in step.
The Search the Community function on the right (halfway down) can be tried but the current version is not very useful in my opinion as it tends to list (chronologically, going back) every post that contains anything you may have typed. In other words, IMO it does a very poor job on "relevance" logic. And if you get to the bottom of the list and "add more" and look at one and go back it takes you to the beginning, I recall(?).
Try this: "site: cs.trains (your subject)" using Google (not Edge, if you have Windows 10). Example...on track ballasting:
https://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome-psyapi2&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8&q=site%3A%20cs.trains%20track%20ballasting&oq=site%3A%20cs.trains%20track%20ballasting&aqs=chrome..69i57j69i58.12124j0j7
Try both ways.

Google works well, sometime too good - if someone posts a question and I'm not sure, often I will google the topic and one of the top hits links right back to the forum post - even within minutes on a post that has no replies yet!

I use Google search and include trains.com. I have had a lot of success.
When these forums were upgraded maybe a couple years ago, the software people disappeared. Rather useless forum search now. Not the first time your question has popped up here. Too bad.
Another example, spell check does not work in all the forums.
If you ever fall over in public, pick yourself up and say “sorry it’s been a while since I inhabited a body.” And just walk away.
And it used to be, if someone sent you a private message, "Messages" (in your profile box) would illuminate in red to let you know. Now you don't know unless you think to check it.

...and, for the past two weeks, "There are no community members online" over in the right "Users Online" pane! At least in my browser, Chrome 46.0.2490.86 m.
I just did a Google search for PC 220125 this is a photo of a box car I just posted at Prototype Information for the Modeler. There's my post, right at the top of the list but it says "posted 17 hours ago" huh? I mean it was just moments ago...
Go figure...

Well, I'm glad for you, Rich. Ever since the last forum software upgrade 2-3 years ago it has ceased to work for me.
Mine only changes when I click on the "manage profile".
And for search, Google.
The forum search function is absolutely useless most times.
But, the good news: Like Google, it's free.

Ah! Google site search and the box on the right hand side. Thanks all. I forgot that the forum posts are public ... a key reason why I do not post my full name!

I was looking for M.C. Fujiwara's thread for the color he found to be most suitable to spray-paint track. I found it the old fashioned way and picked up a rattle can.

Whether ''Messages'' turns Red or not does not really matter. Go to settings and click on Advanced Options in Community Settings and put a check mark in Notifications for receiving Direct Messages and whenever You get a PM, it will show up on Your E-mail account. You can either answer it from Your E-mail or go to MRR site and everything will still show up on Messages. No one will get Your E-mail address, unless You want them to.
Take Care!
Frank
Google often provides more accurate results than the search engine on the MR forums. Many posters (guilty!) seek similar questions as others, but find faster results when reading responses to their posts than sifting through older Qs.
Perhaps one idea is to have the search find you answers based on exact phrases also. For example, searching for "CN and GP" should yield both in a phrase instead of one or the other. Just a thought!
