Carol Valley Railroad July 2015 MR - What trackplans is it based on?
Posted by Idaho Narrow Gauge News on Thursday, September 10, 2015 8:20 PM

The article says it is based on two track plans from Model Railroader, anyone know which two? I really like the design and would like to see how it would work with a few changes in O scale. It would fit into a three car garage and still leave room for the car.

The lower left (Equinox)  is based on a switching puzzle not a layout or track plan article. I don't remember which issue it appeared in.

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

I don't have a leg to stand on.

Equinox appeared in the March 1972 issue.  Titled the "Sagatukett River RR track plan".  A switching puzzle was included in a sidebar for the town.  The layout is a point to point with 3 points.  Equinox is one point.  The town in the July article is not an exact copy.  The most notable change is a passing siding was added next to the wall.  In the original, the only run around was around the wye.

I don't remember off hand what the other one was.

Enjoy

I seem to remember that name from the 1972 article. Thanks.

I really like the loop plus two branches configuration, I seem to recall it from an old track plan book but can't find it.

I thought I left the references in the story, so I went back and looked, sure enough, Equinox you already know, the other part of the plan is based on the Interstate & Western, which first appeared in the August 1967 Model Railroader, and also in the same book you'll find Equinox, Track Planning Ideas from Model Railroader, a 1981 book, which is out of print.

If you have the All-Time Digital Archive, you can read the article from the August 1967 MR.

Thanks for reading!

Found a copy of the book for $7. Thanks everyone!
