Well,

At 14 ambient degrees F it seems warm in the sun...which is actaully out today, but it is really -4 below zero 'real feel', so at that rate it is colder than an ice cube on a wet tongue! It will only get colder, others can beat those temps I am sure. We will have to drip the faucets tonight to be sure not to have frozen popes. The ole north winds howl today!

Went out in the blustery winds to boht CUs, we are transferring {we think} form one to the other, but the "one" is closer and the "other" is a distance. Now granted we can do things without ever stepping into them, but you know this old dinasaur's reasons for not doing things online, if you don't, think the word "compromised" and you will get it.

Mr. B: so you talkin' about the Amherst Society's show?:

http://www.railroadhobbyshow.com/

Sure would love to go but to late now probably to get a room, and MOH should be safe from surgery, but who knows? That and shortage of funds will keep me home.

Otherwise I'd go looking exclusively for "Z" scale stuff!!! I am bound and determined to have 2 loops in a plastic "under the bed box". DC will be fine, they won't do much but go around, and maybe drop off a car at a  siding. Not in an under-bed box, anyway!

Happy B-Day {posthumously} To Garry's father, may he RIP Angel

DArn, after a week of NOT, that tooth candidate for Root canal is starting to act up again, just now.

well, dinner will be cooking a couple dinners at once in the oven, so it is sure to warm up the place! Usually raises the LR/kit by 5 F.

If I don't take another nap sooner...Zzz

have a great nights rest!

Afternoon folks!

Chloe, a cup of hot chocolate would warm me up at the moment...

Back from the Vets....  Not good news.  Blackie after a 6 hour fast showed a blood sugar of 437!  They like to see it between 150 and 200....  So he will be starting on insulin soon.  I am waiting to hear from the Pharmacy for the insulin and the needles he will need, and the Vet Office is ordering in a pet glucose testing kit for me.  I did get a practice on giving Blackie the injections at the office while I was there (just pure water).  He didn't even flinch when I gave it to him so that will not be a problem.  Doing the sugar testing will be more problematic as I might need 3 hands to get that done.  We shall see what we shall see.  The pharmacy will be giving me a call when they have the insulin and needles for me.

Currently 13°F (feels like -2°F) outside....  I did make all my errands driving the PiP in EV Mode today.  Have to be carefull when it is this cold out not to push the car too much until the battery gets warmed up a bit.  Asking for too much from the battery kicks the ICE on (Internal Combustion Engine) and wastes gas to warm up the car.  I am glad the car has heated seats...  Keeps my Butt warm....Laugh

Manét has been coughing all day.  Gave him the hairball remedy before I took Blackie to the vet.  Hopefully that will get the hair to pass through him and not come back up onto the carpet!

Lota of STUFF to still get done today.  Later!

Janie, can I get another cup of Hot Chocolate....  Man! It is cccccooolllddd out tonight!  Looks a bit sparse in the diner today so I'll try to brighten things up with a bit of "Upstate, NY" humor....  Well it is supposed to be humor but really it is just the truth. Laugh

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRUE UPSTATE NEW YORKER WHEN:

"Vacation" means going South past Syracuse for the weekend.

You measure distance in hours.

You know several people who have hit a deer more than once.

You often switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day and back  again.

You can drive 65 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging  blizzard, without flinching.

You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked.

You carry jumper cables in your car and your girlfriend/wife knows how to use them.

You design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit.

Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow.

You know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter, and road construction.

You can identify a southern or eastern accent.

Down South to you means Corning.

You go out for a fish fry every Friday.

Your 4th of July picnic was moved indoors due to frost.

You have more miles on your snow blower than your car.

You find 10 degrees "a little chilly."

You actually understand these jokes, and you forward them to all  your Upstate New York friends and to those who used to live here and  left.

Good Evening,

Ray, sorry to hear about Blackie. I am very familiar with giving insulin injections to a pet as our Jamie had them twice a day from age 6 until he passed away at nearly 14. It was never a problem except that Westies have very thick skin so you really had to push it in. Also we couldn't use a home meter again due to the skin being too thick to use one of those little test needles. We had to take him in from time to time to spend all day at the vet to due a blood sugar curve by taking it from a vein.

Well today the old car wouldn't start. I had it plugged in but suspect the cord wasn't working properly. Anyway even after fixing that no go so I called the On Call service. It was great as a guy came out to give me a boost within the hour. I'm going to get a new battery tomorrow. The car will be 5 years old in May so I guess it is due.

No RR stuff today but I did read a little of 'Steam to Northern Ontario'. When I have finished it I think I will start re-reading the other books in the series. I now have all 9.

Keep warm,

CN Charlie

Evening guys,

SOrry to hear about Blackie Ray and also sad to read about your sisters kitty. I hope she can still enjoy her trip.

Brrrrrr, its cold out tonight. At the moment its sitting at 14c but with the windchill its closer to -30. The car acts up when it gets this cold. Say for example we go out to the grocery store ( 5 mins away ) and come out it wont turn over for 10 minutes or so. I guess we should let the car get nice and warm before going out. It starts fine first thing in the moening or if it has been sitting for hours.

Its only in the extreme cold weather it does it.

Laugh RAY: I modified them a bit for more truthfulness.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRUE UPSTATE NEW YORKER WHEN:

"Vacation" means going South past Syracuse to the "southern tier"for the weekend.

"The City" does not mean your town, it means New York City, downstate.

You measure distance in hours.

You know several people who have hit a deer more than onceand took the meat home to the freezer because it's "free"..

You often switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day and back  again.I do that frequently!

You can drive 65 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging  blizzard, without flinching.Only 2 feet? I thought it was more like 3.

"lake effect" simply means a little more sn*w

You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked.

You carry jumper cables in your car and your girlfriend/wife knows how to use them. She also knows how to use the mini shovel and you always carry "ice melter" or sand in your trunk next to the tirechains if you don't have studded tires.

You design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit. And the kids wear sn*w boots too.

Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow, slush and ice.

You know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter, and road construction.Construciton is when that stoopid frenchman "De Tour" comes out to "play"

You can identify a southern or eastern accent.

Down South to you means Corning.Or Pennsylvania, and you can spell Pennsylvania correctly.

Your neighbor throws a party to celebrate his new shed.A NY  Amish built shed

You go out for a fish fry every Friday.CHeck Out "Doug's Fish fry'- he holds benefits all over the southern tier of NY.

Your 4th of July picnic was moved indoors due to frost.Still winter, not yet De Tour season.

You have more miles on your snow blower than your car.

You never wash your car from October to May. It may freeze the locks.

You find 10 degrees "a little chilly."

You actually understand these jokes, and you forward them to all  your Upstate New York friends and to those who used to live here and  left.Oh,I do, I do. I shall, I shall.

Hello my railfan friends! Hope everyone is hunkered down and warm. Gotta tell ya, i feel like a beached whale. Spent most of the day over at the parentals. Man o man did i ever get stuffed!

Pineapple meatloaf, fried corn (peppers n onions in that), a baked tahoe and some beans. Topped off with a rasberry cobbler that was so good.... mmmmmmmmmmmm! And now i am paying for it now! Laugh

The addage - "ate so much im miserable" is true! One good side effect from home cooking is gaining weight. Now in my case thats a good thing. We have a special scale, it not only tells your weight, but also your personality. My readout read.... "tell Moe and Larry to get off the scale".

The good side of that is in the last month or so I have picked up 20 pounds! As stated thats a good thing, as Ive always been the runt of the family. Pretty embarrasing to have to ask someone to turn a wrench for ya because youve put all your weight into it already and it didnt budge. Ive had to do that a few times.

I spose another upside to it is i can eat anything anytime. I burn it off just looking at food. Translated into RR terms, this means duck unders are never a problem, until the knees give out i spose.

Speaking of RR things, since i spent all day at the parentals nothing got done here. Did watch the temp gauge plummet 25 degrees for the day. I know this is still beach weather for some of you folks up northern way.

Well, just wanted to stop in and say howdy before i turned in for the evening. Hope everyone is well and warm. Spose i will catch yall tomarow. Have a great night everyone! That goes for the cats too! Big Smile

Occasionally I see on forums &quot. What does that mean?

&quot is an html code to draw a " mark.

You are supposed to see the " and not the letters. Sometimes the program does not make the transition and you see the code instead of the mark.

Perhaps the new HTML-5 has depreciated that code, but I am not sure why it occurs the way it does. Maybe it is this forum parsing the codes before handling it.

Ken: YOu are added to the "sick bay" list!

Hope you see a DR. if it continues longer than a day or two. The flu is gowing around and the vaccination {if you got it] is NOT effective on the strains currently gowing around.

Good luck, and stay HYDRATED!

Mornin'.....  OK, I'm late again.  Afternoon folks!

Zoe, I need a refill on my mug with Marakkesh Express Dark Roast coffee please.

Just ain't enough hours in the day!  I will be driving to Canandaigua shortly to drop of a pile of checks at the bank that does our 501c3 account for the MLK Scholarship fund, then take the PiP to the dealers for it's 25,000 mile service.  They rotate the tires for me...   Not anything else to "service" at 25,000 miles.  They will also do the yearly inspection for it to keep NYS happy...

Ken, you don't sound good at all.  What ever you have...  Don't spread it around.  OK?

Catch up with you all later!

Good afternoon ,Diners!

6f above, but windy! WC is at minus 32. We will be under a severe WC warning through Wednesday evening. WC could reach -40 to -45f.

Soooo, I did my errand running today. Wallworld for some MRR supplies, Menards for furnace filters, etc.

Johnboy:  I made it to the Post Office, so watch for the package we talked about. I don't know how long it'll take. I'm a bit more than an hour south of Duluth/Superior, So hopefully not too long. Sorry for the delay! Don't worry about postage, it's on me. Wasn't much anywaySmile.

Hope you feel better, Ken!

YGW: I have added YOU TOO, to the "sick bay list"...as RAy says...DON'T YOU {or KEN} Spread it around, we don't want it!

I went to the psychiatrist, I am still "sick in the head" or so he says...wants to see me again in a month, so i must still be "crazy".Now y'all know why some of my psots are "off". I am "one full bubble to the left of dead center"...

I had to take papers to the finance lady as it seems my secondary insurance actually paid them so the 'Copay" they made me pay is due back to me! Amazing! An insurance company that actually paid a bill{s}! Imagine that! Now, to get my "refund" the county legislature has to "approve it". That could take another 6 months!

Got my new back brace. I ordered one in my size, but although stretchy and supposing to be tihgt, it was not big enough,  so I ordered one the next size up. COmfy now, and seems to be doing its job helping my back. I will have to give it a good workout on house chores tomorrow. Since my goal for this new years is to lose some weight gained by the new med i take from the psychiatrist {"is it working?" he asks, "I don't know" I say, "but it sure made me gain weihgt jsut like you said ti would" I say}, the BIG Q is do I send back the smaller one, or keep it for when I lose the weight, they are hard to get in the larger sizes!

On teh way to the psychiatrists, the "CHECK ENGINE" light came on. It seemed to be running fine, but I will take it in to Firestone tomorrow. I like to not wait for suck things to get really bad and damage the engine. It's not flashing, so i am better off than that..otherwise I could really make a mess the Firestone LADY {yes LADY} says. hopefuly a cheap, easy to replace sensor, here's to knocking on wood! The last thing I need now is a giant repair bill!Whistling

so that is about it in my world. Obviously didn't get any train stuff done.

later

dinner will be rasted chicken/parm/cheddar cheese topping, or meatloaf, or roast of beast, I have to cook all three so we will see what one we eat. I'd best get at it.

Have a restful night, see you in the A of M.

Evening guys,

Ken : I hope you feel better soon, like others have said keep hydrated. I find along with water sports drinks like gatorade and powerade help keep your electrolytes up. The flu has hit hard around here too. I am always using hand sanitizer and washing my hands.

Long time no see. I been busy since my sister (Jackie for short) was in town from Richmond, Virginia. She works at Target and also going to school for a medical degree. Since she came home it's been a sleeping vacation.

Another off topic I played my brother's video game Tomb Raider 2013. It was very fun and it got me off my railroad hobby "frustration". Other side note I packed up all the Christmas decorations three days into the storage shed ready for next year.

Talk to guys later.

Gidday All, heck I’ve only been off the interweb for a week and find that there’s a whole lot of catching up to be done. I must say Ulrich your refurbishment and opening of Jeffrey’s Trackside Diner was done with great decorum and taste, and that was a great eulogy Galaxy. Thank you Gentlemen.
Ahhhh Zoe, drinks all round on my tab please. Jeffrey’s Tabasco Lemonade intrigues me, I had to “Google” to see how it could be made, and seeing as lemon and chilli, (along with ginger and garlic) are basics in a lot of South East Asian cuisine, I’m thinking it wouldn’t be a bad drop, though I’d probably prefer it on the wimpy side. I was a big fan of Lebanese lemonade, lots of ice and mint, but the amount of sugar is not good for me so am quite content with a lemon squeezed into water, very refreshing and generally have a bottle sitting nice and cold in the fridge.
Speaking of cold, I’ve seen the temperatures some of you have been mentioning, and besides there was a news item on the TV tonight on the snow in the US, so I’m not sure whether I’m rubbing salt into wounds, so to speak, (and may even run the risk of getting complaints made to, and upsetting Cousin Vinnie) but while on holiday I was enjoying 82 F and even though the lake was not that warm, after a half hours swim late in the afternoon I was feeling quite invigorated. Even now at 1101 hrs it’s still 64F.
Thoughts and Best Wishes to All that need them.
Cheers, the Bear.

I will take you of fthe sick list, if you insist.

Now: just for you:

Word of the day:

bildungsroman

PRONUNCIATION:
(BIL-doongz-roh-mahn, -doongks-) http://wordsmith.org/words/bildungsroman.mp3

MEANING:
noun: A novel concerned with the maturing of someone from childhood to adulthood.
Example: Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain.

ETYMOLOGY:
From German, from Bildung (education, formation) + Roman (novel), from French roman (novel). Earliest documented use: 1910.

USAGE:
Divided into three parts, the bildungsroman follows Lizzie from her teenage years in a Catholic boarding school to a summer in Paris as an au pair, to her first year of freedom as an adult in Dublin.”
Sarah Gilmartin; A Woman’s Take on Chauvinistic and Grim 1970s Ireland; The Irish Times (Dublin); Dec 6, 2014.

Also, you say you must "earn your keep",, I'd just like to "keep our earnings"!!!!!

Well,. waiting for Firestone to call with an estimate for repairs for the Check Engine light being on. I know some people will drive a vehicle with it on as they are to lazy {or poor} to correct it. I dropped it off at 7, nad the intake worker siad he'd have a guy on it by 8. It is now 9:18 here, and I wonder what is up? Usually the longer it takes tehm to get back to me with a DX and an estimate, the LARGER the bill is! I am starting to wonder, I will call at 10AM to find out! Of course, on the other foot, I have found they often are "just now brining it in" meaning "we haven't worked on it yet as you are unimportant and since you called we will work on it NOW"...Whistling

I am always nervous when it is in the shop. THEN there is a hump in the driveway betwixt the ruts my Kia minivan makes in the "paved driveway" {really an inch of blacktop over rutted ground}, and while parking in MY spot with the low riding Hyundai Elantra, MOH "ran aground"! Appears no leaks, and I hope there is a cross bar protecting the undercarriage. Will have to take it in this weekend to see if any other damage was done.Just what we need!Whistling

If I go to take a nap, it is guaranteed they will call just as i settle off to sleep.{getting up at 3:30 am it is about nap time now...and lunch tme too, food COMA!}

later!

 HO and N Scale.

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

Extra strong Italian roast coffee in a APACHE RAILROAD mug, please.

Turned cold here. High today of 33F, low tonight 12F.

Overheard a very little boy say to his mom in a store, "We're missing the train". We could all hear it passing out behind the store. Outside, I struck up a conversation with her and it turned out her family collects O scale. Always nice to see younger folks in the hobby.

Healing thoughts for those in need.

Cheers! Rob

Mornin' everyone!  Brrrrrr.....!

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of buttermilk pancakes with real NYS Maple Syrup, a couple sausage links, and make another pot of Marakeesh Express Dark Roast coffee for me.  Please and thank you Ma'am.

A bit chilly here in the Finger Lakes Region this morning.  Currently 10°F and windy (feels like-9°F).  I have so far been putting out fires this morning...  We are at the deadline for getting everything needed to the printer for the program for the MLK Service here.  Materials that were sent a couple days ago didn't come through in a openable form for the lady at the printers, so I redid the files and passed them on.  She now has what she needs.  I have to do several errands very soon and I am not even dressed yet!

Good to see at least one of our sick diners feeling better!

Catch you all later!

Evenin' folks!

Janie a HOT cup of decaf is needed for me as soon as possible.   Brrrrrrr!

I ventured out tonight to the District Roundtable that had to be relocated to the church where we hav District committee meeting from the School as the School had cancelled all after School activities for tonight.  I ventured out.....  Temperature outside was 5°F at the time.  When I got home the temperature was 3°F and is now 1°F.....  "We're Havin' a Heat Wave....  Tropical Heat Wave...."

Yep! Camping Weather out there!

I went and got the insulin and needles for Blackie today.  $277 poorer now.  The pharmacist told me that the insulin becomes outdated after one month and needs to be destroyed at that time....  The Vet (both of them) told me he would say that but the insulin can still be used for 2 or 3 months actually.  The strength can be reduced a bit after one or two months, but won't hurt the cat.  May have to increase the dose just a little if it stops comtrolling his diabettes.  Even so after 2 months Blackie will have used less than half a bottle.....  So much for saving for a Tesla!

Tomorrow morning I have to take my sister to the airport for her flight to India.  Then for 3 weeks I will get to drive to Canandaigua everty other day on average to take care of Claude.  the other days my SIL who is an old High School friend of my sisters will come over and feed and play with him.  I guess Claude has become more cuddly while he is grieving for his buddy Clim....  This is going to be a tough 3 weeks for him.....

Will keep Ken and others in my prayers for the time being.  Hope everyone avoids this years Flu and stays healthy!

Later!
