Turntable Plans
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, October 21, 2004 10:45 PM
Does anyone remember the plans in MR a while back for scratchbuilding a HO turntable? If so, do you know where I can find them? I am currently building a new layout and am unhappy with any of the production turntables and would like to give it a shot at scratch-building one. If I remember correctly, the plans were for a manual crank operated table, but I plan on modifying them to make it motorized. Any help or plans would be appriciated.

I don't know if it was in Model Railroader, but I remember reading about using an Atlas manual turntable to turn the turntable mounted over it . The indexing of the Atlas table could be used. They make a power kit for the Atlas TT thats not too expensive. I'm think of using this idea on the CMR TT I'm bujilding now.

Kalmbach puts out a book on Locomotive servicing facilities and turntables are included in it. However no plans are provided within the book.

If you go to my Railimages link (blue writing on my sig) I have numerous photos of two CN turntables in Halifax and pictures of a home made Turntable I'm presently working on.

A Santa Fe turntable and round house were scratch built by Jim Kelly (I believe) in the late 80s, early 90s in MR. You should be able to find referance to it in one of the indexes here at this website. I think the scale was N. The TT built was a truss style, using available plastic parts. I can't recall if the builder got into motorizing the unit.

Way back in March of 1972, Model Railroader had a article "Build a turntable" By
Joe Kunzelmann and the MR Staff. The text is very good and the drawings(plans)
are excellent. I'm building a 120' turntable based on this article with great results.
A drawing of a roundhouse is also included. I believe for pocket change you can
get a copy of this article from Model Railroader. I hope this helps.
