Is there a manufacterer out there that sells a match to NYS&W maroon? Or does anyone have a formula for a paint match that I can mix? I've looked at many many pictures that seem to show many different variations of the base color, undoubtably due to weathering. I'm just looking for something that seems correct for a freshly shopped unit.

LION is laughing. Him not want to laugh too hard, him might laugh the tail of him off.
Matching paint! When do you want it to match, when it was applied in the shop or after a year on the road. What if the shop bought a different batch of paint and it did not match exactly the last batch they had? Do yopu think that they would care?
Good enough is well, good enough, perfect is a pain in the wallet and or other places.
LION buys pain in Walmart or Hobby Lobby, It is good enough for a LION.

I have to agree with LION on this one!
I love it when somone brings their new painted engine around and is so proud of the color match
I open up my PIC files of over 8000 and show them their engine # with 20 different shades of (you name the color) which is a totally different shade from theirs and watch as their face drops! ;-)
One can never get the color right as -
The Time of day - Sunny or Cloudy - Number of years in service (paint fade) changes the colors of PICs
The only way is to take paint chips and hold them up agains the Real thing - and then it is only good for that DAY & HOUR! ;-)
SO keep on trying - as that is the FUN of it - I guess for some!

I have used Modelflex Erie Lackawanna Maroon #16-53, it's pretty close. http://www.modelflexpaint.com/Paint.html It's best to buy 4 to 6 bottles (other colors) to make the shipping costs pay.
