Cal-Scale F-unit Ladders

I have a question for anyone who has installed the Cal-Scale ladders on more than one Athearn F7A. Did any of you try both cutting off the part of the ladder that extends up next to the shell (on the inside) on one and cutting notches into the frame on another? If so, which one was easier?
