Today I successfully ran a train around my flextrack oval, which included a pair of turnouts (N-Scale, 28"x48"). While this may not seem like much to you seasoned professionals, for me it is a major accomplishment. I learned a little about carpentry, quite a bit more about electronics and electricty. It took me months to get to this point and there is absolutely no way I could have done it with out the assistance of many of you and your answers to my novice questions. Thank you!
The next order of business is to install a pair of Tortoise switches. Wish me luck.
Richard
We all started out as beginners. Some learned a skill or two before entering the hobby and others have learned each skill as they go.
You have discovered the thing I like about the hobby is variety. Once the basic foundation is down, there are so many other aspects that can be worked on. Some days you may feel like doing one thing when the next day it's a different preference.
Sounds like you are having fun, the main point of a hobby.
Keep us posted.
Good luck,
Richard (RideOnRoad):
Congratulations!
You are further ahead than I am and I have been at this hobby for 10 years. The best I have managed is nine feet of test track. Can't wait until my son moves out!
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
Richard,
I view learning as a ''gift'', the will to want to learn, as a ''greater gift''.
Congratulations on your accomplishment.
Now! What are we gonna' mess up today Beev?
Frank
Dave,
When I semi-retired, was preparing to start my nice large layout, but a son returned. I know your desire to have yours move to another location. I do have a space less than half the size of the original designated space. It is in the basement (not a bad environment, cooler in summer), so I can run trains. New design for an around the walls shelf in progress.
Have fun,
Richard (Cowman)
Thats great Richard and keep at it. Model Railroading as a hobby is, "What should I do today"? Design a layout, Build bench work, Lay track, wire layout, build scenery, build structures, procure train equipment, dream, plan ahead for materials you will need and on and on. This is why Model Railroading is the Worlds Greatest Hobby for young and old. It never leaves you. Doug
Good luck on your layout, it's a start to a great hobby, NOW the next step to become a full-fledged Model railroader, start buying as much stuff as you can, then buy more stuff, later buy even more stuff, cram all this stuff under your layout, now buy 40 cars, 39 locomotives, building kits and store them away too, then buy more (and don't tell your wife!) soon you will be able to discuss all the "stuff" you have with others who have stuff too > lol
