What is it you like most about model railroading? For me, I can say it in one word.

Probably seeing sixty-some car trains winding through various scenery, under a single roof.

Spending time with my kids on what is a challenging and very enjoyable pastime. I really enjoy the DCC aspect of the hobby.

I agree with most of the answers already given. For me, to sum it up: Turning trains, rolling stock, buildings, scenery, etc. into a active, living, breathing (and believable) model railroad...ALL in the confines of a 4 x 8' table!...for now...[:D]

Building kits. I love 'em all, from wood to resin to plastic to brass. It seems I do more of that than I do actually running my layout! There's nothing like relaxing after work by watching tv and building a nice, simple plastic kit (or even not so simple!).

I love to operation of my Eastern RR. Run the trains with a fast clock. Passengers on
Eastern RR pay money to get there on time.

How does one describe a "favorite" aspect of his "favorite" hobby? I enjoy super detailing and weathering my steam locos, (except my Trix Big Boy, which always looks like it just came out from a rebuild). I enjoy detailing my diesel fleet and weather most of my rolling stock. Then again I love building structure kits and scenery, including running power & telephone lines on the poles and buildings. Also I enjoy running my structure and track wiring and installing decoders in all my locos. I enjoy super detailing my autos and trucks on the layout and even the people. Of course, it is great to just sit back and watch the trains run thru the layout and pass each other in different directions, especially when dark and just the street & building lights are on, watching the lighted locos, passenger cars and cabooses go by.. But what is the most favorite aspect? Knowing that it will really never be finished, so I will always have more enjoyable time with my "favorite" hobby!

I have to ditto most of what Ray54501 said above.

However, without getting too philosophical, I like the fact that there is always something to do on the layout....not only is it never "finished" but who wants it to be. I have a brother-in-law who treats his home like we do our hobby. He's always building, tearing down, half-completing several projects at a time and I'm sure that those bedroom doors that were installed and never primed/painted will NEVER see a coat of paint. Unfortunately, he has a wife who IS WAITING FOR EVERYTHING TO BE DONE and in the meantime, their world is always upside down. In the "train room", who cares if that brick building hasn't had the mortar lines put in or that roof-top still hasn't been painted black. I'll get to it when I feel like it and nobody else cares.

I retired several years ago and think the best aspect of the hobby is that every day I get up thinking of what I'd like to add to the layout today. And, there's nothing like getting that new engine in the mail....kind of like that Christmas morning back in 1953 when Santa delivered that American Flyer train set.

Enjoy!

The thrill of Model Railroading and building my layout the way I want to do it without a BOSSMAN looking over my shoulder. As far as my layout goes, I only have one person to answer to................ME!

Superdetailing engines and rolling stock, building believable structures and scenery, and then having it work are all great, but if I had to pare it down to one word, I would say comraderie.
For without friends to cheer my successes, wince at my failures and share information and fellowship with, I doubt I would have gotten as far as I did.[:D]

Steam motive power. Everything associated with them. Detailing them. Weathering. And they come in hundreds of shapes and sizes. Each one with its own personality.

Modular railroading at its best!
If it has an X in it, it sucks! And yes, I just had my modeler's license renewed last week!
