steel mill layout....
Posted by rlayman on Saturday, May 11, 2013 5:40 PM

if any of you have a steel mill layout, could you post some pictures of it. i'm looking for ideas for a steel mill. my wife bought me the walthers blast furnace and rolling mill models a while back(pre ashland) and i'm looking for ideas on a steel mill layout.  i would hate to let those models go to waste. i have been improving them lately and would like a layout to incorporate them. i also have a nice model i built of the northern light and power. i have been through the kalmbach book of steel mill modeling, and have done some research on Mr. Freytag and other modelers steel mill layouts. basically I'm looking for some help on developing a track plan. I understand these layouts can be complex, but like i said, i have the structures built, and i have been detailing the blast furnace, basically the crown jewel of a steel mill layout. any pics and suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Thank you in advance

Bob..

While I am not a steel mill modeler I  help a group (The Magarac Society - a NMRA SIG) that delves into steel miils and steel mill modeling.  One good source of info can be found at these URls:

There is much more of course.

I have all 4 Walthers original steel mill kits on the layout. My rolling mill is actually 2 kits assembled end to end to make a longer building.

Below is the coke oven, and I made changes to it including a tipple to lad coke into coke hoppers.

Below is the blast furnace.

Below the electric furnace is on the left and the rolling mill is on the right.
