I have been on this forum long enough to know which poster I like to read and which I prefer to avoid.

Yes,I've been around here since 2001 and learn quickly who was blowing smoke and who wasn't..

Corollary question:

Who reads biographies?

I know I rarely if ever read them.  The last time I did, the person's opinions did not encourage me to interact with him.

I'm just lazy. Or it was a low priority. And I hate writing bios. When I'm interviewed they have to drag a bio out of me. I have needed to update my bio on my biz page for years.

Yeap, that is where I am.  Bad enough one has to write them for job interviews and the like.  Would much rather be wring posts into a thread than thinking about a bio.

Mark,As I mention before in another thread one of the first things I learned about forums is not take anything personally..Another lesson was to toughen my skin.

You haven't been hound tell you had a bozo to follow you from forum to forum heckling every reply you made.Bozo finally gave up when I stopped playing his game.

When I start a topic I read every reply and may give more thought on the matter but,its never personal since we all have different points of views that won't always agree..I suspect that's why they are called discussion forums  and not agreement forums..

I'm not your " by the book" modeler since I do things differently and by "my book" and that book is full of lessons that will and will not work and old school methods.I could care less about "experts" or "expert wanna bes" since they're like the wind constantly changing.

I can't wire a toggle switch but,I can set down with the best of 'em and talk railroads, operation and planning ISLs..Thats my forte..I gain a lot of first hand experience through the various clubs I've been a member of over the years..I gain a lot of knowledge through research that includes using Bing and Google maps.

when reading someone's post or response, wouldn't knowing that persons age, experience in modeling, perhaps the size and completeness of their model railroad, other interests and/or occupation be helpful in judging that opinion or posting a response?

Aren't all these things people could post in their biography without much risk?

That may not tell you much at all. It's all relative.

I am "Thin skinned", there is also a fairly strong likelihood that if something can be taken wrong I may very well do that.  Some people seem to consistently want to crap on my parade and I get tired of their immature rhetoric!  I've been told a few times: "Don't feed the Trolls"!

It has gotten to the point for me, that I doubt there to be much value in participating here!  I have attempted to provide, what I think are thought provoking and insightful threads when I post.  But, they always seem to provoke rancor and discord!

Yes, it is my reaction to the Trolls that causes my problems!  I certainly am not "Perfect" and the Perfect ones will let me know about it!

Aren't all these things people could post in their biography without much risk?

Why does it matter how many posts they've had or how many years that person has modeled whatever road?  Just because someone has been in a hobby for 40 years does not necessarily make them really good at it--it just means they are at least middle aged.  I'm a prime example of that.

I am much less likely to trust the frequent posters on some forums because I have learned that most of them do not know as much as they think they know--some of them just like to talk an awful lot, period.

On some forums people get away with libel and deserve to be sued.

I am also less likely to use my name at the bottom of a post since there are people out there who have already been very difficult for me to deal with in the past.

In fact, I would change my name on this forum to a completely new name, but short of using a new email address, I can't figure out how to do that.  I wish I could get anonymity back.  There's enough nasty nutjobs out there in model railroading--and I've dealt with too many.

In fact, perhaps I'll go sign up for that new email address right now, and will share even less information in the future.

We'll see if this is my last topic as 4-12-2, or not.

Best Regards--

Why don't/didn't you add a biography to your profile?  When I see someone post to thread and they have given an interesting; or contentious, post, I would like to read more about that person.  So, I click on their name and 90% of the time, the poster has added no further information!

I wonder why we're so secretive about who we are and what we've done?

I thought of that also, but recently when I was being harassed by another poster and threatened I learned that it was a good idea that I did not post any info about myself. You never know who or what you are dealing with.

Hello NP,

Why are you upset?  Didn't seem like a waste of "everyone's time".

There were a good number of, what appeared to be, sincere answers to your question.  Some of the other posters were defensive in that they thought that you were suggesting that they provide detailed personal info.  But you weren't and that was eventually made clear.  But what was nasty?

Your reply "Fill in a biography or don't,  makes no difference to me!"  makes you appear as if you are "thin skinned" which would seem unlikely for a gentleman of your background and experience.

You asked a good opening question, so why not just respond to the posts that you feel you can connect with instead of going into defense mode.  Just let it ride............YesCool

NP2626

I guess I just can't ask a benign question without someone making nasty comments!  So, this was just another waste of my and everyone else's time.

Sorry I had a general question!

Fill in a biography; or, don't, makes no difference to me!

I am just paranoid about posting any information about myself anywhere on the internet.  I have a FB page and even there I am only giving out the basics.  Not that I don't trust anyone in this forum, it's just a matter of trying to maintain my on line privacy such as it is.

There's never time to do it right, but always time to do it over.....

Uhm, wow!  Seems like some folks have their knickers in a knot over what was really a simple inquiry.

I have always found it interesting how the lack of being face to face changes communication between people.  The anonymity that communicating on the internet provides emboldens some to the point of appearing not to care how they express something or who they embarrass, insult or demean.   After that first verbal shot has been thrown topics that may have been of great interest to many on this forum devolve into sometimes very nasty exchanges that quite frankly do nothing to promote the hobby we all enjoy.  I am just as guilty of doing this as many others.

Recently a thread began to question the legality of posting certain items.  I posted a response to that question that came off as authoritative and, quite frankly, arrogant. Richhotrain, a well respected member of this forum took me to task about it. My response to Richhotrain I am not proud of either, but instead of taking offense Richhotrain simply stated why he had responded, and how he perceived the tone of my post.

Guess what? He was right! I let my frustration dictate my tone, and in doing so came off sounding negative in a way I never intended.

Perhaps we should all try and take a deep breath and think before we fire off a response that we might end up regretting later.  While this hobby is something we all share and cherish, it is, after all, just a hobby.

Finally, just to stay a little on topic, I don’t have a bio because I’m not sure what to write. I do, however have my real full name in my signature.

I find it tends to keep me honest, and I hope it always keeps me humble. . .

Well that didn't come across the way I intended.  Something got lost in the translation from what I was saying to what came out in electrons.  It was meant to be a humorous attempt to turn the question around and think about it from the perspective of "why should someone post a bio?" instead of "why doesn't someone post a bio?"  And yes, if we were all sitting around the table, having coffee and scones, I would still have said it the same way; you just would have gotten the non verbals as well.  Sorry, insults were  not intended.  As my daughter puts it, "if you fall down a best friend laughs and says 'get up, stupid.'"  I regrettably assumed a level of familiarity among this board that isn't there.

Thanks Lion, a Mogul would actually interest me when it hits the shelves.  Whether steam or diesel, I much prefer smaller, local and switching power to big, superpower engines.

After reading all of the postings on NP2626's question, I do not see how it got to be about giving personal information.Confused

Since this is a model train forum, any info we post in the "About You" section would only be about what got you into the hobby, what type of layout you have or want to have, and maybe era, etcetera. Such as I have in mine.

Know where did any one say you have to give, address, bank account info, income, where you work or any such info. I don't even give any of that as this forum is not about those things.

Thank you for your responses to the original question though as they are very informative.

What someone has in their biography is of more interest to me in discerning and understanding the world of interests someone has and how that might apply to understanding their approach to model railroading.

It is kind of interesting this discussion drifted into being formulated as being about someone's "qualifications." That's a lot like the many testosterone-dosed  comments that people leave in threads. As it is was all about being "right" in a hobby where there's often a 1,000 different good answers to many questions and most of the rest of the answers can now be looked up if you're good at Google and discerning useful sources.

In other words, we're all chasing the same dang chicken. Better off we all chip in a start a chicken farm, so there can be a chicken in every pot, I say.

Folks, being here should be about sharing a thoughtful conversation with each other. Thin skin is not an advantage. Neither is being real insistent on having the Holy Grail of Railroad Knowledge. It just ain't so, even though there are some darn good folks here. The only problem is half of them are trying to prove something that fundamentally doesn't matter more than a warm cup of spit.

We'd all do better by concentrating on that slogan I wish our hosts would bring back -- Model Railroading Is Fun!.

If I want to know absolutely everything about someone, I'll go to Facebook.

I have a Facebook account, but I disabled all the notices and I seldom go there at all.  But, if I get the sudden urge to know what toothpaste everyone uses or which toilet paper they prefer, I'll get right back to it.

I'm not suspicious, or paranoid.  If I thought my MR profile would put me in danger, I'd put something like "Lifelong NRA member" in it, discuss my imaginary pit bulls named "Darth" and "Vader" or pretend to have been in the Marines.
