Think about buying a new and cheap digital camera, looking to stay under $100.00. Would like a good video capability but that is not a must have. My old Cannon 3.2 720 seems to have died and I would like to start posting some new layout pictures.
Only must have are the following.
1 Be able to turn turn flash off so the shutter speed slows down.
2 Have a Tripod mounting point.
3 Must have a easy to use Photo program where I can change brightness, zoom in and crop the photo.
4 Work with XP Home edition.
I was fine with the quality of my Cannon 720 with only 3.2 Megapixels and loved the HP 1.1 software. When I had to change computers I have not been able to load the HP 1.1 software for some reason. Well, it kept saying I was missing Silver Light or something like that. Tried to down load it, and still could not get it to load.
I am fine with this kind of quality.

I just got my kid a new phone and he was playing around taking pics of the layout with it. It has a HD video in it and takes incredible photo's. So if it is time for a new phone think about what camera it has and kill two birds with one stone.
The wife and kids have these incredible phones and mine is so old it is held together with tape! But it still makes those two or three phone calls I make every month.

The new Panasonic Lumix compact version just came out recently. Its 14 Megapixels and shoots HD video. Its a really nice camera for under $100.
Has all the manual controls and everything.
I have the higher end Lumix L7 from two years ago (it was $280). And you've seen my pictures. Its great.

I ditched the software that came with my digital camera and use Picasa. It's free, from Google, allows light weight photo redoing such as altering contrast, color balance, cropping, red eye reduction, image compression and more. It isn't Photoshop, but the learning curve isn't as steep as Photoshop. It also serves as an excellent photo album program, allowing easy organization of your photos on your disk.
I have been getting good results with a low end Kodak point-n-shoot. I won't recommend it since Kodak is out of business now. Walmart has a GE X500 for $105. It looks nice, big glass lens, 15x zoom, 15 megapixels. One member of our train club bought it recently and likes it. I am thinking of getting it, cause after some years my point-n-shoot is getting flaky.

A Kodak Easyshare with the 14 MP lens. Should work like a champ and is compatible with Windows XP. My son's was. 3 inch diagonal viewfinder gives excellent picture composure. Just saying. Bill

My son has taken robotics at school. The kids must build and program there own robots to do a task. For an old geezer like me it is really something to see what they can achieve. Anyway they use old cameras for the eye(s) of the robot (if required) and the teacher gets all the cameras from the thrift stores. Places like the Sally Ann. I was blown away by how good and quite new some of these cameras were that he had gotten for as little as $5.00 a piece. It might be worth a look.
Ken: I use a Nikon L20 Coolpix point and shoot camera. It works very well, is easy to use and so far has worked with every operating system I've had since I got it. I looked on Ebay and they are still available for under $70. Mine is a refurbished unit that I got from OfficeMax. I can upload it to my computer or I can put the cameras SD card in my computers card reader and upload the photos directly.

Dave, I just download Picasa, later when I am done running trains and I will fool around with it.
Far as a camera, I forgot I was given a Fujifilm 2.0 Megapixels and I will try that first before I buy another one. Besides I bought a B&O GP 30 today.
