I've finished the Lounge and 1 coach. The Walthers lighting kits need to have a longer wire from the board to the strip so that it can be hidden in the corner. I also glued the end panels directly to the inside of the car because "floating" there was too much of a gap in the window. All car windows touched up with Alclad II green. Does anyone have an eta for the Dining Car Interior?? (Coach- 2 pics then Lounge:)
Mine doesn't move.......it's at the station!!!
Looks great.
If it's not too much trouble, could you post a closeup photo showing the Alclad tinted windows.
Oh and the dining car interior is nearing completion so shouldn't be too long until it's released.

I used a light coat of Alclad on this SF car to allow the interior to be seen. The is a comparison of the Walthers new on the left and Alclad on the right.
Thanks for the tinting photos. Looks just about right to me on the Hi-Levels. Nice job.
Always enjoyable seeing these beautiful works of art! Passenger rail modeling has really come a long way in just a decade.

It has taken a good turn for detail and your work has contributed to the progress also. All of us have enjoyed seeing the Alclad process and learning from your experience. Thanks for sharing.
This is the lounge with some passengers installed. The tint is not what I wanted but will get an addtional coat to darken.
Matt
No problem.\
The one below is outside light and shows the tinting on the tail coach car.
CZ, is that UP Dome car Brass? It looks too sharp to be a Walthers.
ho modern modeler CZ, is that UP Dome car Brass? It looks too sharp to be a Walthers.
It is a Walthers!! I do have some in brass but after the Alclad tint was on the windows, it just seemed to look better overall.
Thanks for the comment. Alclad seems to do the trick in tinting.
Thank you for your encouragement, CalZephyr,
But, imho, it's all of our efforts combined that really help. Model railroad manufacturers regularly check this and a slew of other forums (inspite of the occasional "battles") to check what modelers are buying, creating, modifying, thinking, etc.,.
Although I don't gamble, I'm sure one would win a bet stating that Walthers' reps have viewed this thread!
I'm just happy that passenger rail modeling is alive and well. As much as it's criticized, Walthers really gave passenger modeling a big shot in the arm when the newly tooled passenger cars in Budd, Pullman Standard, and ACF flavors hit the market back in the early 2000s. Before that, the best plastic RTR Budds we had were generic Rivarossi units.
Jason Shron and his crew gave us another big boost with the very successful Canadian which raised the bar even higher.
Although I'm certain that the younger "under 30" generation will soon be pushing for the more modern equipment (Bombardier, Siemens and those weird "M8" things from Kawasaki ), I hope that interest in the pre-Amtrak era and the early Amtrak era remains strong and hopefully continues to grow.

CZ,
Glad to see this thread again.
Please forgive this questions as I think you answered it before on another thread but I don't know which one.
What technique, materials, or equipment do you use to produce the antimacassars on your seats? They look excellent! Are these decals or stickers? I'm looking for a simpler method as I find painting anitmacassars quite tedious.
A bunch of us were using the Trakworks kits available direct or from dealers. I got mine from Railmaster:

Beautiful work, just stunning! The realism is top notch .
Happy modeling!
Don.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that both engines have failed, and we will be stuck here for some time. The good news is that you decided to take the train and not fly."

The Diner kit is out and I was hoping you might post some more pictures of your work and progress on the El Cap Train.
I started on three coach cars this week and will post some pictures when they are done.

This was my initial post.....there's more pictures posted last week at the bottom of page 1 including the Diner. Having issues with lights working after squeezing the cars back together. When they all work I'll post some night pictures on the layout.
I put regular bulbs in the lower level at first, but didn't like the way they looked with the Walther's LED lighting kits. Now I'm reinstalling LED's instead or both on some cars.
As far as figures go, when I receive my Deluxe Amfleet set at the end of the year I will see if I can divide the peeps between the trains since no doubt I will have to remove them to paint the interiors.

Thanks for posting those. I had missed the diner pictures. I just started on the coach cars this week and got the paint mixed and applied to three cars. Now for the not so fun part of cutting out seat covers and the details for the cars. They are beginning to look nice. The main problem I still have is the cost of getting riders in my cars. The Lounge car cost less than the cost for the riders I installed inside. The coach cars will be only have a few riders since I can say the rest of the people are on their way back to the lounge or diner.
I used LED's for the lower level also in my cars.
Yeah, the figures are quite expensive, and hardly any are seated and riding on a train!! (I can find them when I have $$). There is a cheaper pack of 100 unpainted but the wife doesn't want to help me out......

Quoted from above post:
"Who is offering the unpainted ones 100 each??? That sounds like a pack for at least two or three cars if I use them here and there. My thought is some are in the lounge, which I have about thirty some there and some will be in the diner. The coach cars will only have ten or so per car to amortize the cost over the entire train."
This was the one that I saw on Reynauld's site (Walthers out of stock=tba):

It's 120, actually. If you search "figures" "ho" "unpainted" and include disc. a lot comes up

Thanks. I will have my LHS pick up some for me.
The weekend has been good for some model working time and three of my coach cars now have interiors that are almost complete. One car has the roof back on with the tinted glazing looking rather good.
The car below is a 700 series coach car that needs a few more items to be completed. For a weekend project, that is a lot of seats to cover.
This is the step down coach car that was in progress, but now is complete with the roof replaced.

Thanks. Most do not notice that type of detail. I have to build more of those for the rest of the cars.
Looks awesome....I remember being not so thrilled when I got the first coach kit, but once I finished one it looked so good I had to do the step-up/downs. Those are my favorite ones.
