HO Bachmann Dome Car
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, September 12, 2004 5:45 AM
HO Branchline & Budd made the headlines here so why not a Bachmann beater.
As a lark I bot the Bach full size dome($13.50) to use on a siding as the "Sky Harbor
Atrium Resturant & Lounge" run by former laid off dining car employees.(the Rock had one)

Now for the surprise. The car does not meet protypical requirements but this 85'
has just as good as a finish as my Budds, swinging knuckle couple(metal spring) box,
three axle trucks that have greater lateral swings, 6.50 oz and unlike my original budd wheelsets, ROLLS. For the cost conscientious modeler, here's merit for consideration and I just bot
a second one from Trainworld.

My discounted nickel's worth.

I have four N scale Bachmann Amtrak full domes, and I have been very happy with them. I also have a set of Kato Amtrak Superliner cars. Although the Kato's are of better quality and appearance overall, the Bachmann cars actually have more detailed interiors than the Kato cars. The Bachmann cars also have a small amount of underbody detail where the Kato’s have none.

I'm not sure, but the Dome Cars I've seen from Bachmann are the full length units in the Amtrak "Phase 1" paint scheme, which are based on the Santa Fe "Hi-Level" prototypes.

They're actually nice looking cars that already come equipped with interiors. With minor work, they can be sharpened up to look pretty decent and run together with Superliner Cars, just as like the prototypes.

I think these are actually based on a GN design, at least, I recall reading that on this board about a year or so ago. They have low-level gangways rather than the high-level type on the Superliners and the "El Capitan" cars. It's good to hear they're decent models as I've been considering buying one for a while now, just have to wait until Bachmann UK have them in stock again...

The Bachmann full length domes are based on the AT&SF Budd Big Domes. These cars are still found in service today most notably the BNSF business fleet. The unfortunate thing with the Bachmann cars is that they have the large letterboard as applied by the Auto Train Corp. I am still trying to figure out a way to scribe fluting out of the letterboards (imposssible?).
