I'm not sure if this has been done yet or at least a thread of this nature, but here we go.

I would like to see somebody produce a BN F unit executive set in N scale like BN 1 and BN 2. I know HO scale has a set already which I plan on purchasing one for my uncle in georgia who also runs the BN.

another one I think is cool too is the CSX F's

No.

I'd much prefer to build/modify/paint my own.  What's the point in doing this kind of work if everybody and his brother can simply buy the same thing right off the shelf?   LaughBang HeadLaughBang HeadLaugh

A  N-scale SW1.  Prefer Western Pacific and Sacramento Northern, but I can repaiont if necessary.

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

I don't have a leg to stand on.

Jim,  there's a version of your number 300 HERE, albeit in original SAL paint.  Scroll down just past half-way to see the pictures.

As for the GP38, it doesn't appear all that unusual, nor is the paint job one which would be difficult to reproduce.

How about 4449 in the Bicentennial scheme - in G scale?

I'd never run the thing, but it would look nice between my wife's golf trophies on the mantel.

Lacking that, an accurate HOj WaRa 1 class 17 ton capacity 4 wheel boxcar would be nice...

this isn't limited to diesels, yeah I posted the GP20D in there. I was watching the vid and thought why can't they have the exec. F's in N scale. I can paint but not scratchbuild, or kitbash.

I don't believe the SW1200 has been done in D&RGW switcher scheme yet.

I'd also like to see Athearn Genesis offer the phase I D&RGW single stripe F7's which pulled the California Zephyr in the final years.

D&RGW F7 #5571 was an F7 that was rebuilt as a result of a wreck in the 1950's and EMD used an F9 carbody to restore it so the sides are F9 style but the roof is still F7A all the way (36' dynamic brake fan).  It was retired in 1969 IIRC.  This F7A would be a no brainer for Athearn since they did a similar unit already, F3A #5531.  This was an F3A rebuilt to an F9m around 1953 by EMD - it looks like an F9A from the sides, but has the roof of an F3A - Athearn Genesis offered this in 4-stripe and single stripe - I bought the single stripe as seen here:

The F7A #5571 would look very much like the above diesel except the roof details would be all F7 and the numbers on the number board.  Since the Highliner shell is modular, it is easy to apply the correct combination of parts to match various rebuilt F units and offer them!

D&RGW F7#5574 from the same original F7ABBA set as the above loco pulled the California Zephyr until the CZ was discontinued in March 1970.  #5574 was a standard phase I F7 painted in single stripe paint around 1965/66 and after the D&RGW F3's were retired at the end of 1965, became one of the D&RGW pool F units to pull the CZ, and by the late 1960's the pool of F7's was getting smaller so #5574 was used most of the time.  In the last year or two, it sported F3 style tall roof fans, which must have been swapped out during a shopping around 1969.

FYI, the following D&RGW F7 sets were outfitted with steam generators in the B units and had controls to regulate them:

#5552,5552,5553,5554
#5561,5562,5563,5564
#5571,5572,5573,5574
#5581,5582,5583,5584

Set 5581,5582,5583,5584 was originally ABBA delivered with no steam generators, however, steam generators were added to the B units some years after delivery, so F units from this set could handle passenger trains.

The first 3 ABBA sets listed above were the first F7's purchased by the D&RGW back in the 1948 and 49.  There is a whole treatis on www.utahrails.net on set @5561-64 which was purchased before all the F7 features were available from EMD so it was sold as an F5 set and later upgraded to F7.

The above F7's were the primary passenger F7's, however, D&RGW bought 6 F9's in 1955 as a last gesture toward passenger power, 2 A units and 4 B units.  One set was #5771,5772,5773,5774, a pure F9 set, however #5761,5762,5763,5764 was a set with two F7A's and two F9B units.  The above two ABBA sets were used on the California Zephyr but 3 F9's #5774, 5772 and 5773 were wrecked in the late 1960's so the last couple years of CZ service was pulled by a mixture of F9's and the above F7's.

Considering how popular the Broadway Limited California Zephyr cars are, it's a plus to have model makers offer accurate passenger power for this train.  As it, the early years of the CZ are pretty well covered by the Genesis WP F3ABB set, plus the WP FP7A and F7B which were used through out the life of the 1949-1970 CZ operation:

As far as D&RGW power goes, by date we are covered by the following:

1949 - Genesis D&RGW black F3ABBA, Broadway and P2K black PA/PB/PB
1949-1952 - Broadway silver (orange nose) PA/PB/PA.  The black F3ABBA were used also and repainted around 1951.
1952-1964 Genesis and Walthers Proto 2000 F3ABBA yellow/silver 4 stripe and Broadway/P2K PA/PB/PA yellow/silver 4 stripe (used as late as 1959, after which the D&RGW used only EMD power on the CZ).
1964-1965 Genesis single stripe F3ABBA sets
1966-1970 Genesis single stripe F7's and F9's (some available as discussed in this post.

For CB&Q CZ power, the (disclaimer, I am not a CB&Q expert) the F3ABA sets were used during the first few years of the CZ operations starting in 1949.

For late era CZ power I am not sure of the status of good up-to-date CB&Q E7A, E8A and E9A's are but a new run of those would be good.  Of course we have the Genesis D&RGW 4-stripe and single stripe F3ABBA sets, and the Genesis D&RGW single stripe F9ABB and F9AB sets for #5771,5762,5763, and #5774, 5773.  Also Genesis #5764 was made and freight versions of the phase II F7's.  So whats left?

D&RGW phase II F7A #5761
D&RGW phase I F7A #5571, 5574, and corresponding B units with 36' db fan but FARR air gills added to match the appearance in the last CZ years.  F7A#5551 and 5552, 5561, 5562 were also seen on the CZ but mainly pulled secondary passenger trains like the Yampa Valley Mail or Prospector after the PA's were retired.

A B&O P6 pacific. I've made a few attempts at kitbashing one, but  with the manufacturers now getting more diverse, I'd rather just buy one. If Bachmann can make an EM1, a very nice model by the way, why not a P6?

Pretty much anything pre 1906 is few and far between.

I would like Athearn/Roundhouse to make some additonal shells for their 36 ft underframe, such as a St Charles door boxcar (plug door), a left opening door boxcar, a high sided gon, a low sided gon.

Then do some plainer, more common lettering for eastern roads in multi-packs for the 36 ft cars (B&O, N&W, PRR, LV, C&O, NYC&HR, ERIE, CNJ, WAB, L&N, ETV&G, etc).  They have been doing a wonderful job of creating accurate schemes on cars, they just tend to pick really obscure roads or roads with really small fleets for the majority of their offerings.

A camelback boiler that would fit either the Bachman 4-4-0 or 4-6-0 series or the  Roundhouse  2-8-0, 4-4-0, 2-6-0 mechanisms would be waaaay cool.

If you go to the 3D printing site, shapeways.com, someone is making an N-scale SW1shell, but they haven't decided what to power it with yet. I would try the Tomytec or Kato powered chassis. It is not for sale yet.

KYLE SW1000 #1125

RNCX* GP40P-2 #1792 City of Raleigh

Even though KYLE SD40-2s were never painted in Kyle Blue.  I would like a few SD40-2s painted like the KYLE GP40s.

All of these locomotives are manufactured today, so eventually I will get undecorated locomotives, and paint them.

I think the Nacionales de Mexico QR-1 4-8-4 Niagara would be very welcomed not only by Mexicans but also by many other steam or 4-8-4 fans as well, since they were the last 4-8-4´s on the North American continent in use.

Oh boy one of my threads got revived, Arnold's making an SW1 I'll have to pass on that.

Here's to hoping N scale will see more of the C424/425/636/415's being made.

Steam and transition era modelers need 40 and 50 foot door and a half box cars.  I know there are resin kits out there, but these cars numbered in the 10s of thousands and a reasonably priced plastic kit (think Accurail) would be great.

I love building resin kits, but it gets very expensive to build a large roster that way.

Accurail door-and-a-half (Standard Car Company half-door):

Train Miniature door-and-a-half (modified TM doors):

Another TM (modified Tichy doors)

...and another (Red Caboose doors):

It's even easier to create doubledoor cars for those eras:

Train Miniature (modified Athearn doors):

Another TM (Bowser doors):

Accurail doubledoor (not sure about the second door - maybe McKean):

I don't have any 50' door-and-a-half cars, but lots of doubledoor ones, all pretty-much stock, like these from Walthers:

...and Model die Casting:

...and Athearn (somewhat modified):

Both Athearn and Walthers (Proto) offer 50' single door cars which could easily be made into door-and-a-half cars.

doctorwayne,

Your work has inspired me in the past to rework my accurail and other cars.  I've gotten quite adept at removing cast on detail and replacing it.  Are you making the 4 foot doors by cutting a section out of a larger door then gluing the right and left ends of the door together?

It's good to know that others are doing similar modifications. Big Smile
Other than the Standard Car Company door used on the Wabash car, the others are regular 6' or 7' doors with segments removed.  For Creco and Superior panel-type doors, I usually remove the raised portion along both sides, then cut equal-sized portions from both remaining edges.  The raised portions are then re-attached using solvent-type cement, rendering the joints almost invisible.  If you're not making operable doors, you could plug the existing door openings in the car, then cement the doors directly to that.
For Youngstown doors, such as are used with most Athearn BB boxcars, the procedure is pretty much the same, although if you're putting them back onto an Athearn car on which you've modified the door tracks to be more prototypical (overlapping portion of the top track removed and the lower track removed completely and a new one built just below what would be the normal floor-height of the car), then the doors will also need to be lengthened.  You'll need donour Athearn doors for this - I picked up a bunch of them at my LHS .  Simply segment the stock doors horizontally at an appropriate spot, then choose the desired portion of the donour door, cutting it free and then cementing it between the two parts of the original door.  The Espee automobile car in my previous post was modified in this manner.
For Tichy wood doors, I prefer to cut them vertically into three segments, avoiding the door hardware.  An equal number of boards are removed from each side of the centrepoint, then the remaining portions re-assembled.
Tichy Youngstown doors can often be used on Athearn and train Miniature cars with little or no modification.
These modifications are an easy way to create some unique cars.

Thanks Wayne, I will try that.  I'm finishing up 3 Accurail SS cars now.  Next project is a MONX (Monsanto Chemical) 4000 gallon Type 30 tank car.  I've got an old LifeLike 1890s type tank car that's going to donate the small tank and an old Type 30 frame to cut down.

After that I will find a couple door and half prototypes to try your technique out.

Thanks for your help.

There was a rumor here at the forums that the next passenger train to be offered by Wathers was going to be the Northern Pacific North Coast Limited in the Lowey Scheme.  I guess I would ove to see this, even though I wouldn't be spending that kind of money on a train.

It certainly would show one of the most beautiful trains to you guys.

What do I want to see produced? Two words, Pennsy Steam. N scale needs a decent K4, I1s, H10s.

But speaking of rumors, a friend of mine was at the Big E in Amhearst this past weekend, told Baxhmann that N Scale needed a decent K4. She was told to "watch their announcments."

Heck, I'd settle for a revival of the Minitrix K4, albeit with a better mechanism.
