CONNECTING CODE 80 AND CODE 55 N GAUGE TRACK
Posted by RAM46 on Sunday, October 28, 2012 9:37 PM

Folks:

I'm a newby and an oldie at the same time.  I've been accumulating equipment for thirty plus years now in anticipation of having the time and place to model a railroad. Now I find myself with the opportunity and I'm planning a railroad for a shed about 10' x 13'.  But I've got both code 80 and code 55 track and I wonder if there is a good way to seamlessly connect the two.  Can y'all offer me some advice?

Use transition rail joiners.  Alternative method - flatten one end of conventional joiners, solder the thinner code 55 rail on TOP of the flattened area, giving a smooth joint.

I plan on doing the same thing, using code 83, code 70, and code 55 in HO scale.

RAM46,

What brand(s) are you trying to connect?  If you use the Peco c55, it is actually c80 with about .025 buried in the ties so only about .055 is exposed.  This would almost mate up perfectly with other c80 track.  In either case, you will most likely need to do some filing to make a nice, smooth joint.  If you are using other brands of c55, then do as posted above.
