MDC Boxcars
Posted by ericsp on Friday, August 20, 2004 7:00 PM
With the exception of the PS and FMC boxcar models, I was under the impression that there were no prototypes for MDC's modern boxcars. However, today I saw a boxcar on a train that looks like it could have been the prototype for MDC's waffle side boxcar. It was KCS 115231. The train was going fairly fast, so I did not get a real good look at it. Has anyone else seen a boxcar that looks like it could be a prototype for a MDC boxcar?

I know this to be true of the MDC modern 50' tank cars but I hadn't heard of this for their modern box cars. Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

MDC's "modern" high cube cars are fictitious. They can be reasonable stand-ins for several varieties of late-'60s to mid-'80s prototypes but aren't exact for any of them. The big problem with matching to many prototype cars lies with the odd diagonal panel roof MDC used, and the ends are likewise difficult to match to a specific car. More accurate high cube models can be had from LBF, Walthers and Athearn Genesis.

Here is a picture of one of those cars. While not an exact match for the MDC car, it does look fairly close.
