Galaxy- I have to agree with you. When I was buying Atlas Flex Track, Cork roadbed and turnouts they were the least expensive and also the same on several Cornerstone kits. You have to shop around because different sites have the best pricing for specific things.

Many complain about wholesaletrains.com carrying a higher shipping/handling charge than others, BUT here are some statistics:

Evening All,
Just got done eating Chinese at home, and now drinking a cup of decaf (helps settle the stomach). Have to w**k again tomorrow. I got soaked by the rain today when I was on a call, but I guess that's part of the job. I thought briefly about working on the layout but I just don't have the energy tonight and probably go to bed early.

My father was one of those that got to drive one of those Turbine Cars. A long time friend of dad's was a Chrysler VP. Actually, Chrysler's turbine development continued much later than most think, and came to an abrupt end under suspicious circumstances. There was a very sharp looking turbine powered car based on the LeBaron/Diplomat coupe platform in the late 70s. Many of the earlier turbine drawbacks had been worked around, and the car was very near production worthy. Chrysler's turbine program was not ended by choice. For no stated reason, the 1980 government bailout of Chrysler stipulated that all turbine engine development be ceased. Some speculate that it was due to political pressure from GM and/or Ford.

Elwood Engel, head of Chrysler styling had worked on the 61-63 Thunderbird when he worked for Ford and it showed in the Turbine Cars styling so much that some referred to it as the Engelbird. Of course there were many differences. The Turbo Car was three inches trimmer than the T-bird. The front was simple if not blunt but the back was absolutely wild. It had boomerang cavities with large angled taillights. The backup lights were in turbine styled housings. Then there was the paint. A bronze body with a black vinyl roof. Under the hood was Chrysler's fourth generation turbine engine, the A-831. Fifty examples were built by Ghia in Italy. The field test of the cars were done by residents of all 48 continental states with each using a Turbine Car for about three months. A total of 203 people drove the cars between 1963 and 1966. Very little maintenance was required in comparison to comparable piston engine cars. Acceleration lag was one to one and a half seconds. Gas mileage on low grade fuel was disappointing, about eleven miles per gallon. Chrysler never released any official gas mileage numbers. Acceleration from zero to sixty was under ten seconds. Not bad for a 4,100 pound car. Meanwhile Chrysler was testing a fifth generation engine, the A-875 in a 1964 Plymouth. That was short-lived as a sixth generation engine was ready by 1966. This was fitted to a Dodge Charger fastback and a Dodge Coronet 500 hardtop. Chrysler planned to build five hundred turbine-powered Coronets for retail sale but new government emission standards nixed the idea. Only one turbine-powered Coronet was built. It hung around Chrysler engineering until 1972.

Reality...an interesting concept with no successful applications, that should always be accompanied by a "Do not try this at home" warning.

Have just finished running ALL my locos on a test track. Have decided to sell no fewer than 8 of them. (7 steam, 1 diesel)
Set 2 others aside as "undecided". This leaves me with 24 "keepers" to run on the layout.
Funny thing is two of those "keepers" are not exactly runners. One is a 0-6-0 tank loco (Mehano?) which represents the first loco in a train set my parents gave me as a child. It's noisy and runs like a rabbit, but I love it for what it represents. The other is a Docksider (Bachmann) which waddles down the track like an overweight duck.
Going to wait on those replacement trucks w/ couplers and see how they work on some vintage cars before tackling that hoard.
Wind is gusting like crazy. With no forest behind the house anymore, what is still standing is really leaning. Look forward to having those remaining big trees removed. One huge pine could easily cut this house in half.

Ken, yes, I live about 45 highway minutes away from Lantz's Hobby shop....AKA wholesaletrains.com. They are in Horseheads NY, {think ELmira-COrning area}.
I have always found them to be fair and easy to deal with. I have order in the AM, and had the stuff show up on my doorstep in the PM!!!
It matters not to me if I have it shipped or drive there {and back} the gas or shipping costs work out about the same. {If I drive there, I tend to spend more on the CC!}
SOme items that are not listed as "next day" will take a few days, generally orders are out and/or delivered in 3-5 business days. I believe they give you the option of partial shipment if items are taking longer to get.
Of course, If I DO have a problem with tehm, I can just DRIVE there to complain LOUDLY!

Was over 60F yesterday and it's 20F and snowing today. Got to love the weather here as it's a constant crap-shoot and funny to watch our Weather folks try to out guess what is happening several days in-advance.

I have already been busy curing several problems this morning. In one school here the entry forms for the MLK Art and Poetry Contest were sent to the secretary by me a month ago, and were supposedly sent on to the rest of the faculty by her. Today the teachers figured out they didn't have the form.... Secretary tells them she sent it to them... Does she resend it... Nope! The teacher THAT contacted me noticed that one of the attachments was blank. I sent a new pdf to her and she now has it. She has sent it along to the rest of the faculty. Bet they will get a "blank" one too. Got to love the way email gets automatically cleaned up of anything that could be a problem now... WARNING!!! You are trying to open a document you downloaded from the internet (or email)!!! It could contain a virus or other things!!! Uh, yes, I downloaded it myself from a secure place..... so leave me alone! M$ office does THAT on the Mac all the time, even for files I created myself!
I'll be checking email a lot today I think.
Have one short item to write up today (Moment for Mission for church Sunday), then on to cleaning house, doing laundry, and some work on the layout.

***C.N.Charlie, the HO layout is 90% Bachmann EZ-track. The N scale is all Unitrack thus far. And the track on both layouts was secured with drywall mud, so removal of any section(s) would be a messy endeavor.
Hey, caught another movie train wreck watching an old movie last night: "The Giant Gila Monster". Couldn't tell what kind of model they used, but the crash was pretty silly.

Good morning. It's 47 and mostly cloudy. The high should be 63 and it will be partly sunny. Isn't that the same as mostly cloudy?Well I got a start on a couple of junk scenes. I still have to add bushes, weeds and some details.I also placed a couple of junk vehicles by an old freight shed.There's still two van boxes, a storage tank and a five vehicle junkyard scene to place. So much to do.

I’m behind on posts again. Last weekend I spent several hours putting things away in the layout room and at the work bench. It’s amazing what you can find if you put it away properly in the first place.
Last night I worked on a box of 32-42 year old locomotives for a friend. He is set on only paying the minimum price for locomotives and I can’t reason with him that the 1975 ROCO 4-6-4 he bought for $25 is absolutely nothing like a 2011 Broadway Limited 4-6-4; you get what you pay for.
My friend had spent hours detailing this locomotive inside and out and asked me to apply bullfrog snot to the drivers and oil everything. I set it on the test rollers to clean the wheels and after about 20 revolutions smoke poured out of the motor compartment and from the gear box. The smoke oil leaked and flowed through the inside of the locomotive while it was stored. When the smoke unit and the electric motor heated up it flashed all the oil into smoke.
