Where are you from? (with a new twist)
Posted by Big_Boy_4005 on Wednesday, August 11, 2004 11:56 AM
This idea is "fresh from the garden", Garden Railways forum that is.

I know we have done the whole where are you from thing before, but the twist comes when we link to a map of the area. No need to go down to the street and house level, just the general area.

Here is where I live. It's about 15 miles east of St Paul. The dashed line on the map is actually the Union Pacific's Altoona sub division. I live almost dead center on this map.[:)]

http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=-10328750&Y=5586250.94138708&width=500&height=300&gride=&gridn=&srec=0&coordsys=mercator&db=US&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&zm=1&scale=200000

Sorry, the link is so long and it doesn't like to wrap around. For those who don't know how to post a link to their map, it's very easy. Click on my link, find your map, and copy the URL from your browser. Then just paste it into your post. The forum does the rest.

Here's mine

http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=-10018000&Y=5365000&width=500&height=300&gride=-10017907&gridn=5364500.94383993&srec=0&coordsys=mercator&db=US&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=Reedsburg&pc=53959&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&zm=1&scale=25000

I'm in the northern area of this map. In the Bottom Left you can see the UP owned WSOR operated mainline, which is now severed about a half mile past main street.

I could actually show you my house if I got a link from Terraserver...[8D]

I won't go that far though, instead I'll find a route map of the GM&O or Chicago & Alton...[^][:D]

I find that Mapquest is better for me, at least, for this I am the star, literally: http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searchtype=address&formtype=search&countryid=US&addtohistory=&country=US&address=1113+franklin+st&city=Burlington&state=nc&zipcode=&historyid=&submit=Get+Map The track is the Amtrak and I think NS mainline.

Nice twist in this thread. Kind of fun to actually see where some of you are located.
I'm in the center of this map, in the town called Tuxpan. It's on the coast, about half way down.
The program didn't give me an option to zoom in any closer. By the way, this is about 10 hours south of the border.

http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=-10750000&Y=2250000&width=500&height=300&gride=&gridn=&srec=0&coordsys=mercator&db=w3&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&zm=0&scale=10000000&multimap.x=219&multimap.y=107

I'd love to say there was a rail line near here, but I can't.

Regards

We're all colleagues here, however, I'm leery about pointing directions to my home on the internet. Rather risky.

Be careful!

Not exactly what you'd call a large town. They don't even show the street names on the site. My house is in northwest part of town. It's on the street on the map that is between the street that heads west to a dead end and the one that comes to a corner and goes south. CP runs right alongside Highway 16.

Well I won't say get out and meet the neighbors, because it looks like you two are in the same club.
This is cool, because up until now I never made the connection, even though I seen many posts by both of you.

Antonio, I said at the beginning you don't need to zoom all the way in to the street level.
You have said in the past that you live in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, so just use a general map of the area.

By the way, visitors are always welcome at my place, just email me first and get directions.

they'll still never find me... even I get lost occasionally [:D] good thing I recall the unlisted phone number, but we do have a big dog, a neighbourhood bear, cougar, and coyote.
but Antonio is right...this is interesting, but mostly trivial (the map that I attached has one road by a lake... neither are named, so it's useless, but silly)[;)]
