Nice pics fellas! Here is a look at our new MTH NKP berk running in the morning fog. I used a fog machine to create this scene, and a few others plus some nice video shots. -Stan

Here is a Red, Off White and Blue selection of recently completed cars for Veterans Day!

Details West Double Plug Door Blue Island Reefer, A Line Sill Steps, painted with Floquil Signal Red and lettered with Herald King Decals.  Car leased by Kelloggs of Battle Creek and will be used with others of this car and my Rail Yard Models X79 PC Boxcars for cereal movements.

Eastern Car Works Enterprise Covered Hopper Kit, these were only used by the NYC and CN so I needed to build a number of these for my NYC freight trains.  A-Line Sill Steps added, painted with Floquil Primer and lettered with Champ Decals.

Atlas 60' ACF Precision Design Boxcar, painted with CSX Blue and lettered with Microscale Decals. This car will be used in my Auto Parts Trains.

Thanks for Looking!

Great photos everyone.

Here is a series of 3 different aspects of 2 Pennsy E-7's at the fueling rack. The one on the left is a BLI and the one on the right is a Proto 2K that I put on grab irons and train phone.

Great stuff so far everyone. It has been awhile since I have anything to post. In my hectic world I did manage to get some weathering done while my new child sleeps. I bought this Athearn UP SD 60 pictured here:

The goal was to turn it into a Norfolk Southern patch unit. Originally, as I understand it Helm Leasing bought several SD60 units from UP and recently Norfolk Southern purchased some of these Helm Leasing units and patched them. Here is my rendition:

Here are a couple more pics of the unit I think it turned out great.

Here is the other side of the unit:

I love the B&O scene, and of course Jarrell's distinctly Southern look.

I call this one "Hot & Cold".  It depicts a hard-working and needy PRR J1 pausing under a coaling tower for replenishment, while on a nearby not-so-ready track is a stone cold USRA 0-6-0 soon to be towed to the roundhouse for repairs.

Ah.....  It must be the weekend again!  Gotta love the fine work displayed here once again...

I have been, as time permits, putting together a DPM Powerhouse kit.  I modified slightly to fit the spot it will be occupying on the SLOW.  The big task has been to change the horrid plastic red color of the walls to something that might vaguely resemble actual bricks:

Yuch!  So I tried an old method I have used with success a few years back and met with an even worse mess that turned out a pink....

So....  I did a search of the forum and found a technique someone had shown a few years back.  This involved spraying the entire outside of the structure with the color you want for the mortar.  I used a primer gray:

A little darker than I had hoped, but at least it covered the awful colors underneath....  I am now using colored Artist Pencils to create the brick color.  Starting with Terra Cotta which seems to be close to the natural red brick color I see around here in the Finger Lakes.  I will add various other reds to some of the bricks once I complete the rest of the first coat.  Oh, and Thanks Robby for the idea!

M.C. you do great modeling!  If you don't mind my asking.. what type 'grass' did you use in the bottom photo between the track and the house on the right?  It looks very good.

Thanks Jarrell.

The grass is just WS static grass flock, a blend of dark and medium greens.
There was already a basic ground cover of fine-sifted real dirt, WS "weed" and "green blend" fine ground foam.  I sprayed the area with alcohol, (to help conductivity), dabbed some slightly diluted white glue where I wanted grass, and then used my home-made-from-an-electric-fly-swatter-for-under-$10 static grass applicator.  If it comes out too even I use my finger to push some grass this way and that.

When dry and vacuumed I go back with a retired toothbrush dipped in dirt and scrub the grass--helps get rid of the shiny shiny of both the WS static grass and the dried glue under it.  Blends things together:

[This is N-scale]

I really need to get some more varieties of grasses to blend together: the WS stuff is too even and short and shiny for my tastes.  Would be nice to have some yellows and dark browns in there.  Might try throwing in my beard clippings ;)

Hello all.

Sweethome Alabama is currently being exhibited for the first ever time at Newcastle Model Railway Show in England. Here are some photos from last night, after everything had been set up and tested....but before I put any stock on

The show is still on tomorrow, but everything has been working well so far and there have been no mishaps....yet

Looks great, Jon!

Do you have any shots showing how the staging is laid out & how it hooks up?
(I know this is like asking a magician how the trick works, but... ;) )

Just curious how the operations work.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks M.C.

The history of the layout, from the first cut of wood in July 2009, is covered in photos on the Sweethome Alabama facebook page

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sweethome-Alabama/201342969884638

I'm still working out the operation side of things, as today was the first time the layout has been operated intensively in an exhibition environment. we seem to be leaning towards Despatcher, switch lists and car cards for the operation

Here are some photos from behind the layout at the newly constructed sector plate fiddle yards

...and a photo of the layout packed up and ready to go

I threw a little chalk on this baby after the decals and dullcoat to see what it would look like.  In this lighting you can hardly see it but it's there.   It's a start, I figure I can always add more.

Boy does that plug need to be painted!

Garry,

It is not often that I can look at photos of a layout and instantly recognize the prototype location, in this case the CB&Q yard just south of Union Station in downtown Chicago.

A tremendous effort on your part.  I love it.
