Hey Guys.
For budget reasons I would like to build a paint booth. The booth would be no problem, I'm concerned about the motor. Would a bathroom exhaust fan work or does the motor have to be a sealed unit? I have an (air circulating) open frame motor that came out of a gas fireplace. I'm thinking that, spray can propellant being explosive might be a problem.Does anyone have a spray booth with an open frame motor?
Thanks for any help.

There should be a good filter between the motor and the paint. Still, that will not filter out volatile vapors.
Are you going to duct this to the outside? A good dryer duct will do it. I'd go to Runnings or some such place and buy a squirrel cage fan for this project. They are not all that expensive.

Bathroom fans normally have induction motors with no brushes, therefore no sparking.
I did a google search for model railroad spray booth fan and came up with a few thousand hits and many possibilities with links to keep in Favorites for future reference.

If you ever fall over in public, pick yourself up and say “sorry it’s been a while since I inhabited a body.” And just walk away.
I used a kitchen stove filtered exhaust fan and did not vent out side. It seems to work fine.
BUT: I do not do much painting and I use mostly water based paints. There has been some talk about motor sparks igniting solvent based paint fumes, but I have never heard of someone saying they saw it happen. I don't know if that is a real worry or only a potential problem. I do use the booth for solvent based spray cans and have not had a problem, but that does not prove the possibility does not exist.
I use an old squirrel cage blower from a furnace.I put it on a rheostat which gives me lots of control in our climate .Had the same motor for 15 years and I run it every day to exhaust both fumes and fine wood dust.Never had a problem ! I just run it out a basement window that I have permanently altered but it could be removed in minutes as though it was never there.

Brushless motor and greater than 250 cfm and your ok for most sized hobby booths. Paasche sells just their their motor for like $50. You can put this on a cheap tote from walmart for like $5 and you are set.
I would worry more about the lights folks put in their booths than modern motors
