IHP HO Jersey Arrow III
Posted by alloboard on Thursday, October 13, 2011 5:48 PM

I own about six IHP HO Jersey Arrow IIIs kits that don't have a pantograph. What would be the closest metal with silver top black diamond shaped Stemman pantographs I can find from a vendor. If not black I can always paint them.

I also own a fleet of Arrow IIIs

Basically, there are no stemmans currently available.  You have to make your own.  Some have combined single armed pieces (such as the method used by Island Model Works).

I've constructed my own from brass shapes/wires , but they are time consuming to produce properly.

If you make your own, don't forget the stabilizer bar visible in the bottom picture, which connects the lower arms and keeps them folding properly.  Otherwise, the pantograph will make strange shapes under pressure.

The spring is temporary until i can find a good source of other springs (that does not involve cannibalizing existing pantographs)

Also, in a post from 2008, you asked about making the metal parts for the Arrow III.

Basically,  Island Model Works produces the "modern" rebuilt version of the Arrow III with this detail, as well as proper underbody details and the pantograph kit mentioned above.

IHP's are the "original" arrow IIIs.   They do not have the same details as a modern car.  One of the main differences is that the roof humps are different lengths on recent cars, and there are additional roof details well represented on the IMW model.

I recognize when you made that post, the Arrow IIIs were not available, but i've seen them in person at some train shows, and they are worth a look.

If you'd rather go IMW, maybe we can trade, since i've been trying to model the late 70s, and IHP's kits are perfect.

I finally received an arrow III single unit kit. I don't understand how to put together some parts like the vent and the grille and boxlike parts. I know how to shape with the brass grill but not how to mount it. How did you figure it out? My kit did not come with instructions. Can you tell me how to put those parts on the right spot, if not I understand. I will contact Island Model Works on how to put some parts together.
